I've been thinking about getting an old tractor to restore just for fun. I found a 1950's IH Cub Lo-Boy locally for $600. I haven't gone to look at it yet, but the guy said it ran great when he parked it 3 years ago. The only problem he said was the PTO shaft splines where worn. He also said he bought a belly mower for it but never mounted, that comes with it but not sure if it's new or a used one.

So is it worth the price if it's not completely rusted out? What's it take to replace the PTO shaft? Should I just keep looking?

Good price for a running Cub with mower.

You can get a replacement PTO shaft for under $100

International Harvester Case IH Farmall Cub PTO, pulley, guard, parts

Check the tires. If they're badly worn and cracked you'll pay a at least $300 for a pair of rears. See eBay for prices.

Good Mornin Jaybr,
You got some good advice from Flusher, the pto shaft can be replaced without too much trouble, and like he said take a good look at the tires ! They can get expensive for new rears ! I bought a 49 Super A a few years back to restore and I payed $700 for it and the rear tires were a little weather checked but had very good tread and I only had to replace the fronts. Its a great feeling to bring an old tractor back from the graveyard and bring it back to its original condition ! ;)

Thanks for the replies.

I also found an IH 424 that is supposedly in perfect working condition, guy said he used it with bush hog 2 weeks ago. Asking price is $1500 and I'm thinking this may be a better deal in the long run. I also have a bunch of implements sized for my CK35 that the 424 would have no problem with, where the cub is undersized.

I could just restore the cub and use it for mowing duties, although I just bought a 72" Rhino finish mower last week.

If you want to do a restoration just for fun, and end up with a tractor that looks good but will also have work duties, then I'd go for the 424. The Cub is priced right if it isn't a bucket of rust, but you said yourself it's undersized for your attachments. The 424 is a good tractor, will look great restored and can do a lot of work for you too.

I say get both.. the cub is cheap at 600$.. I paid 2400$ for my 1966 model.

the 424 at 1500$ is also cheap...one will be a good worker.. and the other will be a fun project..

$1500 for a decent 424 is a bargain, at least in this area it is. They generally sell for $2500+ here. I've seen 'em fetch as much as $4000. Years ago, I had a 404 (earlier version of 424) Very dependable tractor, good power, easy to live with. I'd jump at one for $1500 if it's in good shape.
