Identification help Ford 3400

Good morning all,
Trying to date and get as much info on my tractor as possible. I bought it for $500 truly for the loader (going to put it on another tractor I own), but it runs and I may keep it together if I can get some kinks worked out. The steering doesn’t work, and there are some leaks throughout.

I think it’s a 1972 Diesel and it’s a 6 speed
Model: C40*** can’t read the rest
Production code: 2B14B
Serial: C360891

Engine casting photos included as well (not sure how to read them)

Any help is appreciated.

You are correct, it is a 1972, Feb 14 build. The prefix of the model and the front axle verifies that is a 3400. Castings show that the engine is original.
Nor a bad tractor for $500.
With oul in the power steering pump, the steering doesn't work or the steering gear is bad?

It will not steer unless I lift the front end up with the bucket. Then it’s smooth. But the steering cylinders are disconnected

Oh, well that explains the no steering. Power steering pump probably no good

How do you know from the engine casting that it’s original? I can’t tell what the numbers mean.

The casting #, D0NN, indicates that it is a 1970 (D0) build design. The NN means it was designed for tractors.
Look at the RH front bolster of the engine for an alphanumeric stamping. The first part should be a 2, meaning it was built in 1972. Probably a 2B*** like the engine date code of 2B14B. It could start with a 1 as the engine could have been built earlier.

BTW, the true model number, C40*** should be C4011K.
C40 = 3400, 1st generation
1 = means vertical diesel
1 = no PTO
K = 6x4 manual reverse shuttle

There is PTO. But I’m not sure how to tell what type

Is there an ID plate still on the hood? The fifth number in the model code will tell. Alternately, you can check it out this way:

2 Transmission PTO = The clutch pedal will stop and start both the PTO and transmission
3 Live PTO = You can disengage the transmission, but keep the PTO running by depressing the clutch pedal part way
4 Independent PTO = The PTO lever can be engaged/disengaged with the PTO lever only.
