I have a lot of Grey mice around my cabin but this little rascal was light brown and had a super long tail. Body size about 3 1/2 inches....I am in Western NY... Thanks.

But usually found in the dessert, mostly Nevada (so a search found).

Peej might be onto the one you have. :)

John, In my Harper and Row's field guide it looks like a Woodland Jumping Mouse. Head and body 3-4". Tail 4.5-6" Sides bright orange, Dorsal band dark.
tail with white tip. Habits -Dives into water when frightened. climbs vines and bushes for berries. Range- New England and Canada s. through PA and Appalachians.

I'd say that tail was 8-10 inches long. Didn't know if I needed the 12 or 20 ga. to take it down.

We call them Kangeroo mouses. Not real common but I have seen a dozen or so in my lifetime in Ohio. If you watch them run you can see how they got their name.

John, It also says the tail is dark on the top and white underneath.
And if you can find a "Rat" dentist the upper incisors have a groove down the front. Also the hibernate from oct/nov-apr/may in burrows in the ground.
