I need some track advice...

Looks like my Komatsu D21-P6 needs some undercarriage work.

Looking at the tracks ( wide swamp tracks that is) , it appears that the pins are worn clear through to the link pins, the drive sprockets need to be built up or replaced, and the rollers probably need to be replaced as well.

Other than that, at 4400 hours, the dozer is fine.

My question is: do I need to look at getting the tracks replaced or just repaired, and can I switch from the wide swamp trakcs to more traditional grouser tracks ( I need the added traction)

Any ballpark ideas as far as cost to havethis done would be appreciated as well.

You deffinetly need pins and bushings and sprokets unless they have a sproket liner kit available. the pads can be changed over for about 950 to 1200 back to dirt pads. Your rails probably need to be replaced but if theres an undercarriage shop nearby you might frind they will build them up or have a track machine that builds them up. Usually sprokets can be builtup but tehy have to be built up to a template. I have done them that way. You might can order a sprocket ring to. If you build your rollers up when the weld cools it will shink and kill the bearings. Ive aken the rollers abpart and built them up and then reboredthem on the lathe back to their bearing size.

Hello Chris,

What you can do if your rail height is still good is have new pins and bushings put in your chains. If not then new are in order and they are roughly $1900 for the pair. You can then have 20" regular grouser ($1700)put on or even I have put 13" pads ($1,000) on a "P" model. It's all a matter of preference. Sprockets can be fitted with new rims (cut and welded on) or just replace the whole sprockets ($600). If you need any help shoot me an email. Have a great one.

While you're at it, may as well check the idlers for wear and for bearing slop.

I pulled the tracks off of my IH500 which is about the same size and changed a few rollers and rebuilt an idler bearing but the rest was fine. No need to replace the round rollers or idlers unless they are worn below spec. If you rebush the rails, then new sprockets would be appropriate.

I would not try to replace the pin & bushings in those small rails I have worked as a field mechanic for a equipment dealer in pa for the last 33 years & we have found that new pins & bushings will not stay tight in those small rails once they have been changed

Looksl iek I will aim for getting new grouser tracks for the added traction, r/r the sprockets, and replace the rollers. I do not know the status of the guide rail.

Now all I have to do is find a shop to perform this work.

I have R&R'd sprockets, rollers, idlers, and tracks in my backyard from my 10,000 lb dozer. A decent breaker bar, a come-along, and good set of sockets is all you should need. Mechanics that work on the yellow iron are not cheap and there is nothing on that undercarriage that won't fit in your pickup.

I guess what I need to do is get the pressure washer out, get a clean area to work in, jack the frame up and yank the tracks off.

I guess the intimidating item here is pushing the pin out for the master link. I keep hearing that you need a 30 ton portable press to do it. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
