When I was in grade school, my parents gave my brother and I bucksaws and bowsaws to do the firewood. The splitter was an axe or maul.

We did have a gas powered push mower which I used.

I'm a firm believer in getting kids started early, I'm just not sure some parents use good judgement in doing so, take for example bushhogging on an open station tractor with a kid in your arms, no matter how fast you are your reaction time is probably not fast enough if the kid falls, one child in our farming community was ran over by a disc harrow and he didn't make it, and a friend of mine's brother was riding with his dad on an open station tractor while he was mowing , he fell off and his dad got stopped but not before he lost his right arm, now I realize that we can't live our lives everyday on what might happen but a kid needs a good solid adult to make sound decisions, not the other way around, and lastly some kids catch on quicker than others, as a parent you have to know each of their limitations and proceed in the teaching them about farm machinery accordingly.

That’s what we did as youngsters except it was on a 90 hp tractor and we were splitting 3’+ pieces. Actually standing where he is was a very bad idea. More than one when split would sling shot off to the side.
I've put a lot of trust in kids that I know I can.

Saw this on my FB feed today. Sure, start them out young, but don't turn a 5 year old loose on a zero turn mower. I'm surprised he weighs enough to activate the seat cut off switch, unless dad bypassed that. These are not toys. Once he's a little older, a little more mature, and can actually reach all the controls, get him some hearing protection and get him mowing.

So, what do you make of this one from Facebook?

Footwear.jpg

No seatbelt
No ROPS
Exposed PTO
Improper footwear
I bet that machine has a paucity of safety features.

He does, however, have his Captain America uniform on!!!

I cringe when I see a guy on his lawn tractor holding a toddler on his knee. Happens every summer. Reminds me of many years ago, a guy in this area was doing that, mowing on a hill. Mower rolled and the baby died. As part of his sentence he had to take out many bill board ads with his picture and a picture of the lawn tractor and words warning of the dangers. Why not give the kid a ride around on level ground with the blades off, then take the kid back in the house, and go mow the lawn?

Personally what makes me cringe is seeing this ... what is wrong you may ask ? a young kid with a helmet as heavy or heavier then their whole head, if that kid wipe out he/she have a good chance of snapping their neck.

Many years ago I brought my tractor for a project I was doing with my brother. And, at the end of the day I took the kids for a tractor ride. Letting the kids "drive". Somehow with one of them we ended up going faster than I wanted, and got the wheels turned to lock position. Cookies in a tractor!!!

Nothing happened, but I've regretted allowing unsafe operation of the tractor.

Misuse of a safety device. Like leaving the ROPS down and putting your seatbelt on. 🤢

The mower isn't on, the kid is sitting in the seat pretending to mow...

This is why you should not believe everything on the internet... except for aliens... they are real.:alien:
It doesn’t even appear to be throttled up very far if the zero turn is even moving

I’m sure one call to CPS would have this sorted… might even have the child removed from the home…
Just to poke fun at it I was wondering where his helmet is?

In CA, riders under age 18 *must* wear an approved helmet. And if you put your kid at that age in a trailer behind the bike, he has to wear a helmet also. State law. (I'll bet whoever wrote that law would be aghast seeing the mower photo!)

Hmmm ... does CA Child Protective Services go outside state lines?

From the article:

Minors under the age of 18 are required by law in California to wear a helmet when biking. ... In California, people under 18 years old must wear a helmet while biking. Young children aged 5 and younger who ride as bike passengers (in a bike trailer or stroller) are required by law to wear a helmet.

What? No seatbelt? No ROPS? Does that seat switch work? How in the world did you make it to puberty?
Actually, quite a nice picture, great memories!

Actually, a true Panzer aficionado would note that the parking brake is on and it is in neutral.....

I don't know if that was a poke in my direction, but I agree with what you wrote here, bicycle helmet are very light I have no issue with that... If I have a young toddler (1 to 4 years old) with me on a quad I make them wear a kid bicycle or snow board helmet or a hockey helmet after that age I switch to a kids DOT helmet (the lightest I can get) ... If I get pulled over I make my case to him, if the cop has 50 cent of comment sense he will let me go, if not I will take the $150 fine over a broken neck any day.

Personal peeve.... improperly sized helmet can to more harm than good. If the head can move inside the helmet bad **** happens.

Agreed that's is very important for all age and also to not share your helmet with anyone else as it change it's shape... but my main point here is their neck need to be strong enough to support it and for some kids that's can be 4 year of age.

I don't know if that was a poke in my direction,
Nothing personal ... I admit not reading all the pages of the post. Out of the ones I did read, I did not see anyone address a helmet. But you are reminding me to be more thorough!

just pointing out differences in region. 😃

All good, I thought you read my post (misunderstood my position) and poked at it by replying to someone else.
