After cleaning the battery on my Kubota 1850 I reconnected the battery cables incorrectly. After a quick 'zap', the dash lights no longer come on when I turn the ignition key and the tractor will not start. I've had time to check the fuses and none are blown. Any ideas or things to check? Anyone have the wiring diagram for the 1850?

My Condolences,

Did you check to see if you have power to the fuses still maybe you got lucky and only blew a fuseable link. You definitely let the magic smoke out of something maybe several things. In cars generally, alternators, ignition modules, (stereo's) , Engine computers etc... get fried its possible even your dash is fried and any other stuff with solid state electronics in it if it is not diode protected. Someone on here hopefully may have a better answer

Good Luck hopefully its not to costly

Do you have power to the fuses that would be the first thing to check. key on position should get power to all of them normally. most if not all will have power all the time though

Appreciate the response Dave. Didn't have time to check for power anywhere but I will tomorrow. None of the fuses were bad which I find confusing since I thought they existed to prevent bonehead moves like this.

there is also a fuseable link inline with the battery generally but i would be surprised if this blew. Unfortunately Fuses allow current to go both directions they don't stop the flow of electrons they are like a 2 lane 2 way street versus 4 or 6 lanes 2 way streets they just limit how many can get through at one time Overload them and they fault.. This is also the reason you can install a fuse in either direction. Diodes keep the direction of electrons flowing like a one way street, but they act like fuse if you reverse the flow they blow if overloaded, protecting other electronics from their demise. So i would suspect that the alternator diode is toast I'm not sure what else is diode protected definitely need a wiring diagram. Diodes are directional and must be installed in the correct orientation

Fuses protect against current spikes (too much flow), not incorrect polarization (direction of flow). Good luck...hopefully it's something simple. R,

okay, I suppose my next steps are to begin checking for power and trying to find a wiring diagram. Appreciate the responses guys.

The diode trio and the built in regulator in the alternator would probably be a good start, the main fuse, what ever it is for that model of tractor, My Kioti is an inline 60 amp. Workshop manual is gonna be a must.. You need a good schematic, and and good multimeter, and know how to use both. Good luck.
