I believe the 3.1 is referred to in the parts book as a "Regular Diesel", while the 3.3 is referred to as a "Direct Injection"

Here is a comparison:

Feature Indirect Injection (IDI) (A4.192/A4.203)Direct Injection (DI) (AD4.203)
Engine ModelPerkins A4.192 (UK/Overseas) or A4.203 (US)Perkins AD4.203 (UK/US late models)
Displacement3.1 liters (192 cu. in.) or 3.3 liters (203 cu. in.)3.3 liters (203 cu. in.)
Fuel DeliveryFuel injected into a separate pre-combustion chamber.Fuel injected directly into the main combustion chamber.
Injector AngleInjectors are mounted vertically in the cylinder head.Injectors are mounted at an angle (canted).
Piston TypeFeatures flat-top pistons.Features bowl-type (dished) pistons.
Fuel EfficiencyGenerally less efficient.More fuel-efficient.
StartingCan be harder to start in cold weather.Better cold starting performance.
Power OutputA4.192 made about 54 hp; A4.203 IDI made about 57 hp.AD4.203 DI made about 58 hp.

How to Identify Your Engine
You can visually identify which type you have by observing the injectors:
  • Vertical injectors indicate an indirect injection engine.
  • Angled/canted injectors indicate a direct injection engine.
Another method is to check the engine tag or serial number prefix, where the "D" in "AD4.203" specifically denotes direct injection.

Congratulations on the MF 65! For a 1963 model, you most likely have the Mark II. The easiest way to tell is to look at the fuel injectors: if they are installed vertically (straight down) into the cylinder head, you have the AD4.203 (3.3L) Direct Injection engine; if they enter at an angle, it's the older A4.192 (3.1L). You can also verify the engine serial number—the 3.3L version typically starts with 293. Since parts like head gaskets and water pumps differ between these two, it's vital to identify them correctly before ordering. For high-quality engine components and reliable replacement parts for either version, I’ve had great luck with MegaWatts Parts, as they carry a very specific inventory for these vintage Perkins engines.

I hope you've had great luck with MegaWatts parts since you are they, but anyway, welcome.
