Congratulations.

When I see others coming here from former east-bloc countries I feel especially proud knowing my own family roots. Here in this country we are truely blessed and everyone can contribute.

For about the last five years or so have began to notice more and more students from the former east-bloc countries. Met two young ladies this week and one could not believe I knew of Belarus tractors where she was from. All I have met have been very polite and good looking (neat in dress and such).

Welcome! Citizen! And through your own experiences, don't ever forget to tell us how lucky we really are.

And how eager some fellow Americans are to throw it all away:(

That is the great thing about America, unless you are native American we all are either immagrants or are decendents of immigrants an nobody is better than anybody else, we are all created equal. Doesn't matter where you came from once you are here as a citzen you are as equal as anybody else.

Congrats... My wife went thru the proceedure about 20 years ago in Seattle... hatted the parking lot next door that charged $5.00 per hour! She is from the Philippines and I was a active duty Navy Chief, made the process much easier. Recently, she went to the Philippine Embassy in Washington DC and had her duel citizenship restored. Cheaper if we desire to retire in the Philippines (swimming in the south china sea in dead of winter here). I would have to leave the Philippines every year for 48 hours... (Guam) and have my passport stamped where as she can stay in the Philippines! PS... She went back to the Philippines during the the Gulf war with a BLUE US passport and could'nt believe the change when she went back the previous time with a BROWN Philippine passport!

Just keep in mind... lots of folks were forced to come here not of their own free will. Long time ago, but still a fact not to be forgotten in our history. As with all countries, there are some sad chapters. My grandparents and my wife's grandparents both have told us stories about the "old" country. They had problems, too.

My Parents are Canadians. One of my brothers is a duel citizen and had a passport for both countries. He likes to travel and support himself by working overseas. As a Canadian, he falls under some British entitlement to work in their former colonies. I might do it one day, but so far, haven't bothered to fill out the paperwork. I qualify, just too lazy to deal with it.

Dad's family is from Scotland, where we have family. I've never met them, but my parents and that same brother have been there and met a bunch of them.

Mom's family is from the Ukraine. Grandpa used to write to his family all the time before passing away, but for whatever reason, nobody knows what happened to those letters or how to contact anybody there.

I'm the first person in my family born in the USA. Dad was a citizen when I was born, but my Mom was still a Canadian. They moved here in 62. My Dad had just gotten out of the Canadian Air Force and had been trained in electronics. He applied for a job with the phone company, and worked as a janitor until he was hired. Then it's the All American Story. Work, save and invest.

Eddie

Economic migration will be one of most powerful forces in the 21st century. My son has just returned from Senegal. Large numbers of young people realize that they have one chance on this planet and want the best for themselves and their families. Can I deny them this aspiration, not really because Im the same albeit coming from a slightly better situation, namely the UK. But I think one has to be flexible. My family has maintained dual citizenship, not for any sentimental reasons, but because you never know where the jobs are going to be and as a UK citizen Im entitled to work in europe. My working days are coming to an end but I certainly believe that this is very important for my boys.

I got my passport last Saturday. I have to say wow! Applied on the 4th of February and it came by mail on the 14th. Imagine that. I always say functioning bureaucracy is one of the great things in the USA. To truly appreciate it, you would have to deal with not functioning one for a while:)

As a side note, the new passports are very colorful and with quotations from presidents and others:

Abraham Lincoln
Daniel Webster
George Washington
MLK
JFK
Teddy Roosevelt
Dwight Eisenhower
LBJ
Anna Julie Cooper
Ellison Onizuka
Thanksgiving address Mohawk version
Golden Spike, Promontory Point 1869
Declaration of Independence

But Reagan is missing:(
