Tractor
Cub Cadet 7275
Hope someone can help. I just bought 8 acres of woods and am looking to purchase a 3 pt hitch mounted log splitter that I can run off the tractor hydraulics. Problem is there are no remotes installed on the tractor (1997 erea 7275 Cub Cadet). Can I ecomomically install a set of rear remotes? All I've seen online is a dealer kit for $1500 which is crazy for wanting to buy a $700 log spitter. Are there any viable solutions?

I know, the prices for those kits seem too high for what you get. An alternative that I have found is finding a 12v solenoid valve and build around that. You would have too plumb your high and low side hydraulics to the valve, but the valve really could be mounted anywhere on the tractor cause it is operated by a 12v toggle switch. I had one on a Hinomoto that I once owned, it was really slick. Surplus Center and Ebay have those valves as well as tractor salvage yards. I found one on an online auction.
This valve is off a row marker boom from a NewHolland planter. New cost I found is $784, I got it for 8 bucks. Ive seen similar valves used on Ebay for around $50 and less. I dont know why this wouldnt work. Some hydraulic lines, various fittings, wire, switch and a weekend in the garage.

Another thing to consider is the size (GPM) of your hydraulic pump. From what I have read and heard the 3 pt log splitters can have an incredibly slow cycle time if the pump on the tractor is relatively small. I have seen some manufacturers of 3 pt splitters advertise units with smaller diameter cylinders to compensate for this. They are compromising total splitting pressure (rated in tons) by doing so but improving the cycle speed. You may want to talk to several of the splitter manufacturers about this.

There is another option - driving an auxiliary pump for the splitter from your PTO. This also would be rather expensive but might get around the issue of having a small hydraulic pump to begin with. You should be able to find the GPM hydraulic pump rating of your tractor in it's manual.

Thanks JN. Sounds similar to a lawn/brush sprayer I built from fittings, hose, PTO pump, and 55 gallon drum. I bought this tractor at auction so It didn't come with it's manual. Don't know the pump size. sounds like I'd need a tank for the hydraulic fluid too if I go that route. Thanks for the idea! I appreciate the help.

Thanks morris9460. Got any ideas on where to plumb the hydraulic lines to the tractor hydraulic reservoir?? I think the solinoid would work good that way. If you find any more of those $8 solinoids let me know!

Thanks again! TG

Typically, there is a port on the 3 point lift valve that im sure has cover on it. The kits most likely come with a manifold block with hydraulic ports that replaces the cover. Since you dont have the kit, you would have to splice into your high pressure hydraulic line which is the smaller tube coming off your hydraulic pump and runs back to your 3 point valve.
8 acres of woods must create alot of logs to split. If it were me, I would buy a gas log splitter to do the brunt of the work instead of running up the hours on the tractor. A 7275 is alot of machine just to split logs.
Rear remotes are still really nice to have though.

Thanks for the info. I'll see what I can do with it once I get settled at the new homestead this weekend. I also have a brush hog, back blade, soil pulveriser for finish grading. I do a few small jobs with it and cut my Uncle's 6 acre field a couple times a year. I do miss the JD I had with FEL and ag tires as this CC has turf tires and no FEL. Ya lots of wood to clean up. A FEL would really help. Maybe time to head to the auction in Monrovia and see whats available with features that would be more practicle for this piece of property.

Yes a fel would be a must have with a wooded 8 acres. There was a 7275 w/fel and turfs @ auction close to me a few months ago, I think it went for $5500 + tax and 10%. I would suggest selling your CC and getting something w/fel, and maybe rear remotes, you wont regret it.

It sounds like you have some nice implements for your tractor but the FEL is a big deal. three years ago when I purchased my 6284 I was originally looking for a tractor without the FEL. I ran into a very good deal on one with the FEL and the seller convinced me that I would be glad I got it. He was very right about that. Considering all of the different ways I find to use it I really can't imagine owning my tractor without it now.

You could keep an eye out for an FEL that would work on your tractor but I think that would be much harder than finding the right tractor with an FEL on it.
