So you guys pulling over 10k, do you all have commercial drivers licences? I thought that pulling a 10,001lb trailer required a CDL. :confused3: Or do you just stay off of the Interstates?
Some states have a Farmer exemption.

Only in CA.

You wouldn't need one either for interstate commerce.

Are you sure? From what I can find, pretty much every state has a different license to pull a trailer over 10,000lbs. Makes no difference to me, just don't want people getting in trouble. ;)

Driver龍 licenses are separated into the following classes:
class A: Commercial license permits the operation of any combination of vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) rating of over 26,000 lbs. if the GVW rating of the vehicle or vehicles being towed is in excess of 10,000 lbs.
class B: Commercial license permits the operation of any single vehicle with a GVW rating of over 26,000 lbs. and any such vehicle towing a vehicle or vehicles with an aggregate GVW rating of 10,000 lbs.
class C: Commercial license permits the operation of any single vehicle with a GVW rating of 26,000 lbs. or less, including any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVW rating of less than 10,000 lbs. if the vehicle is designed to transport more than 16 passengers or the vehicle is transporting hazardous materials.
class D: Permits operation of any motor vehicle not included in Class A, B, C, or M.
class M Permits operation of a motorcycle.

In Georgia your ok as long as your combined truck and trailer is below 26,000#s. So if you have a 8000# truck pulling a 14000# trailer, your good. Over 26000#s you need a commercial license.

Ca. does have a farmers' exemption, but I'd have to check to see if an endorsement is required. Oregon has it too, but the limitation is on the commercial licensing of the "truck", not the driver. If the truck has personal plates, then there will be trouble towing anything over 10K. :mad:

Positive. CA is the only state that reuires a special license because of a trailer being over 10k by itself. Every other state including WI reuires the combo to be over 26k CGVWR before the 10k trailer thing kicks in for CDL.

My neighbor was talking about getting a CDL and he said in California you had to use Cal tran approved staps for the loads.

This is the same for PA
Although, you better have your truck registered for combination weight if you plan to tow a trailer with a gvw of 10,001 or more.

First - based on the numbers here and to have a little buffer I would recommend at least a 12K unit. I have a CT235 and with several attachments, gear,fule, to go somewhere to do some work I am at just over 8K in weight. To make everything fit I measured and a 20+2 would work for me with either slide in or fold up ramp. PJ is a good brand too. I have learned the hard way that the extra capacity is worth the small costs. Loosing a bearing due to overloading one side in the middle of no where is not fun.

As for needing a CDL in Colorado, with the correct license, in this case a R, you can tow up to 26K combined vehicle ratings.
