How many of you found garbage buried around your place from past owners?

I have mentioned in another thread, but at our place, I have been fighting weeds, mostly lily pads, in our natural lake/pond. At high water, its about 6-8 acres, right now, its Way down. In the neighborhood of 6 vertical feet down, and although im not happy about that, it have been using the chance to attack the weeds. As the water level drops, i keep finding more glass Mic Ultra bottles. Kinda like someone just chucked them into the lake. No telling what all is buried in that muck layer

Not precisely on my property but on what used to belong to the same owner before they sold that half off to the timber company in the 90's.. We have hiking rights on it.. Anyway while walking around today there was a weird gurgling noise from a small seasonal stream I was investigating (sounded like a hidden culvert) which turned out to be just the water going through some old tree roots (still kind of a cool spot)... But immediately upstream from it is a very large piece of old plate steel maybe 9' long by almost 6' wide and a touch over 1/4" thick laying across part of the stream. It was mostly buried in moss at this point but it looked a bit like it'd been ripped out of something larger and there was still a visible riveted seam on the one end I could easily get to without worrying about taking an impromptu bath. I'm assuming it's probably part of an old logging engine but not sure what (to thin and flat.. I think.. to have been part of a boiler).

Before I filled that well I rented a trash pump and pumped it out, then put a ladder in and climbed down to check it out. What I noticed is that while there was room to stand, it was almost impossible to move without bumping my butt against the wall. The wall was cold and my butt got cold.

There's a Tom Waits song where he talks about it being "colder than a well-digger's ass." I think I know what he means.
Oh man, I could not do that. Not because of size, I am quite skinny, but the phobia of being down there would drive me nuts.

Ditto here. I think of the guy down in the bottom of that well digging and have to wonder how many times they collapsed on somebody.

Or asphyxiated from the carbon dioxide, or hydrogen sulfide from stirred sediments.

Personally, I will stick to inspection cameras or GoPros. The idea of trusting my life to unmaintained masonary of unknown quality just doesn't pass my sniff test for a safe working environment. Our "dug" well gives me the heebeejeebees just standing next to it.

All the best,

Peter

Same. I have one right outside the farm house. Maybe five feet. I put a field stone patio over it. I discovered as I was working around the still original hand pump that the "original" concrete extended around the hand pump about three feet round. Fortunately the grade of the concrete allowed me to set the stone patio over it, leveling the area entirely. It must be pretty well supported as I ran the older Kubota over it removing years or dirt and tree root as I was cleaning it up. I was not about to mess with anything else other than finish grading and laying stone.

The pump still works and pulls water that is clear and cold. Even in the summer droughts.
