I would rather farm around a wind mill than a solar panel. Then there is the question of who is liable for damage if a rock from a mower damages the panel. I would not want them on my land.

Wind turbines yes... Solar arrays, no way and solar panel installs take a helluva lot more room than a monopod wind turbine.

Anyone know what the life expectancy is for a solar panel and what percentage of efficiency is lost per year? Durability of panels from hail, wind, heavy wet snow, etc.

I believe 20-25 years and then the degradation of the panels makes them not productive anymore. I read somewhere that they degrade an average of 1-2% in total output year.

Far as decommissioning them and disposing of the panels in a hazardous landfill (they are considered hazardous waste, that is on an individual contract basis. Around here, usually the landowner is 100% responsible for remediation.

The people that out them up don't care, hell, they won't be around to deal with it anyway.

Good panels have a sizable amount of silver in them. And silver prices are way up right now.

I live 15 miles from New Jersey. They had a solar panel on every stinkin utility pole along the roads. Most now appear to be in disrepair. What I fear is this ugly looking stuff is built, then abandoned when they figure out they cant recoup their capital costs and repairs.
Even with subsidies.

Those pole mounted solar panels in NJ are installed by Verizon to power their FIOS fiber optic systems. They don't require commercial power to operate. They do look ugly though.
