how does winter salt affect landscape?

Along those same lines, I have used chicken grit on the ice. There are usually 2 sizes, and I prefer the coarser stuff, because it doesn't track inside as badly. In the winter it's easier to come by around here than gravel. (Unless you're one of those annoying people who plan ahead. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

BTW, I have also used quite a lot of Urea. As long as it isn't too cold it does a good job. The grass loves it! Do NOT use it in a gravel driveway though. Your driveway will need to be mowed more often than the lawn. (Guess how I know that.)

I've been using calcium cloride on my drive for over five years and I have never had any damage to the lawn. You don't need to use as much to get the same results as you would from rock salt and it works down to -25F. It's also not supposed to be corrosive to concrete.

i only use salt on our walk bet house and garage, ONLY if the ice is so bad as to be dangerous, as soon as the ise is partially melted i scrape it off, only use it when absoluty necessary as it brutal on concret, and vegitation

Does anyone know of any other "benign" types of ice melt products? I've of heard something that was made from a by-product of the brewing industry but I've never been able to get any specifics on it. I think it was some kind of a liquid and the only problem with it was the cost (it was much more expensive than sodium/calcium chloride), but for the amounts I'd need, it would be worth it to preserve my lawn and concrete...
