Sleeping well!

If'n I'm tired any old spot on the floor, chair or desk will do quite well long as I got something to put under my neck and I'm warm..

We purchased a latex 3" or 4" mattress topper that has made a world of difference in our sleeping.. No more sore hips/shoulders from sleeping on your side.. I also recently found out that sleeping with a fan running to drown out any noise also helps me to stay asleep.

When we replace our traditional mattress, I think we are doing to get tempur-pedic or latex foam type.. our neighbors buy their mattresses from Latex Mattress Factoy - $595 Latex Mattresses - 100% Natural&Talalay and swear by them..

You can also get a noise maker at a place like Bed, Bath and Beyond for between $15-20. They make an array of sounds for those times, like winter, when you don't want a fan running. We use them for our infant daughter to help drown out all the noise her brothers make.

CNN once had a small article on the five biggest reason for insomnia. The fifth reason sticks in my mind as it was so humorous.
Consider, you spend all night trying unsuccessfully to sleep. The medications from your doctor don't help and you get up in the morning very tired.
The reality - you go to bed, fall asleep and have a reoccurring dream. You dream that you go to bed and can't get to sleep! In the morning you can't separate your dream from reality and are convinced that you were awake all night and are tired. And so you are.
The solution - Get someone to watch you all night and then convince you that you were actually asleep all night. You'll never have that dream again.

Seriously, have you ever considered body pillows?

We looked at Sleep Number beds, but many reviews talked about how they would leak down over time, and you needed to constantly adjust. Not sure it's true, but we steered away.

We did find this product, SleeptoLive, where they take "measurements" on a computer to find your "number". Info is here Sleep to Live: Discover the latest in Sleep research, technology, and information | Mattresses, Beds, Sleep, Mattress Manufacturers

My wife also has MS, and the firm, brand name mattress we had was starting to bother her - at least she thought so. I always liked firm mattresses, but noticed I did not sleep as well as I used to - I attributed it to just getting older. I'd sleep through the night, but not feel as rested in the morning.

Anyway, we went in, did the computer thing, got our "personal" mattress type - I noticed mine was still pretty firm, but not like the old one. And her side was much softer.

Anyway, two months in, it is definitely an improvement. Expensive as !@#$ - but comfortable. I only worry, as we age, if we will need to change it again in a few years....

Fellas ...don't forget it could be your significant other that is waking you up during the night...does she snore, turn over a lot, get up to go to the bathroom ?

I think that's a bigger problem than most people think. I've said for years that we needed separate beds like Lucy and Ricky. But my wife says that if I ever get my own bed then I shouldn't expect to ever get back in hers.

A friend got one of those memory foam/ tempurpedic beds and he said he did not think it was that much more comfortable than his previous mattress. But, he says he sleeps a lot better because they isolate movement and his wife moving around, getting up, etc does not wake him up.

N80 ...How do I sleep at night? Ambien. I have to say that my sleep and my vision are the two things that have been the worst part about getting older...so far...I'm only 47.

Instead of Ambien, try Melatonin , you can get in any health food store. It's natural and non addicting etc. and works like a charm. As you get older your body does not make as much Melatonin.

Great for jet lag or resting your mind.

Brin, my wife is an insomniac and her fussing around is one of the bigger disruptions to my sleep. When I tell her the proper way to sleep is to close one's eyes and dream, she gets annoyed.

That was a concern for me, too, before we bought ours. I expected it to leak down some, but I don't suppose it has ever leaked down. In fact, I won't touch the remote for months at a time and when I do check it, it's usually just out of curiosity to see whether it's changed or not.

There are some really well designed mattresses out there that'll help hide the fact that the missus is a human bouncing-bean. I've seen a demo with a bed salesman putting a glass of water on a mattress and then jumping up and down only a foot away from it on the mattress... not even a ripple.

My missus and I have separate bed-bases (80% mattress thickness), but with a king-sized (20%) top-layer on them. It looks and feels just like a normal bed, but When she bounces around all she does, I hardly notice. It came from Ikea. When it comes to stealing the damned covers though, there's nothing I can do about that.

there was a push to get a new mattress in our house.... i wasnt a big fan of the idea, i like my old one, slept fine on it, had no structural issues.....

but we did need a second mattress for a real bed in our guest room so i complied.

we shopped for weeks, never finding that "love at first sight er lay" mattress. finally brought one home.

slept on it for a week or 2 of nights.... then moved to the guest room to sleep on the old one again.

while the new one is ok, if given a choice i prefer my old mattress, just more comfortable to me.

oh and a note on the new "water proof" mattress pads... THEY SUCK!

so anyone that goes hikeing knows that you want clothing that wicks the water (sweet) away from you. so your not stuck with cold, wet clothing stuck to you while you hike. ya well.... the new waterproof mattress pad, is like wearing a trashbag when your out hikeing. Absolutely miserable nights waking up all cold wet and clammy this winter.

I refuse to sleep on the bed with that dam thing on it.

I have always been a light sleeper. And most of my life I have worked rotating shifts. One of the best tools for a good night's, (or day's), sleep is a set of foam earplugs in the ears. It takes a little bit to get used to them. Once you put them in, all outside noises stop, you can hear your heart beating and the world disappears in silence... For me that's the trick to a good night's sleep.

Thanks for the kind words crusty! I wish you all the best as well! The wife is a trooper - was diagnosed 15 years ago and fortunately the disease hasn't progressed much. And like you, she gets the "you look so good" and presses on with he life. Such a strange affliction and seems to affect everyone differently

@SensibleNick: As for blanket stealing, my wife and I each have our own. There have been no shots fired in anger over the issue in a couple years.

I don't notice her moving around, I notice her turning on a light or laptop to read. Even when it doesn't wake me for too long, I don't feel rested the next day. I've thought about adopting a multiphase sleep pattern to be awake when she is at night but don't know how healthy it really is.

Separate blankets: Smart... but my missus won't allow it.

As to multiphase: I reckon my cats do that... and following this winter I'm wishing I could hibernate. :D
