Dave, I always thought that I liked an extra firm mattress and was happy with such for many years. But then, for reasons unknown, I was getting up every morning with a terrible backache that would take an hour or so to get loosened up. So I did a lot of investigating on the Internet, got brochures, and even samples of some materials, and quite frankly, I would never have ordered the sleep number bed if they hadn't had a money back guarantee; i.e., try it free for awhile (except for shipping, if you sent it back). At that time, we lived way out in the country in Navarro County and I didn't know Select Comfort even had any stores. I ordered the top of the line at that time via telephone and it was delivered via UPS. It was easy to assemble and set up for use, and my back trouble was gone the first morning. For family reasons, we had to move back to town, rented an apartment for nearly a year, bought a little mobile home temporarily for a couple of years, before buying this house. So we've moved it 3 times; pretty simple to unplug, collapse and fold, then set up again in a new location. We did have one of the pieces of the foundation break after a couple of years, called on the phone, and the lady said they'd had a problem, but had it solved, and instead of just the one piece, she's send several new pieces that were stronger. They looked the same, but I guess it's a different plastic because nothing has broken since.
They had a single cordless remote that would work both sides of the bed (we have queen sized) or the corded remotes with a separate one for each side. I'm glad we got the corded ones, so we each have our own control on a nightstand on each side of the bed. Since you may not use it or change anything for months at a time, I'm afraid the cordless one might get lost or have dead batteries when needed.
And of course now I know of two malls in this area with Select Comfort stores.
