Buy the sleep number bed. I was reluctant, but my wife just bought it. Once again, I was not right.

Dave, I always thought that I liked an extra firm mattress and was happy with such for many years. But then, for reasons unknown, I was getting up every morning with a terrible backache that would take an hour or so to get loosened up. So I did a lot of investigating on the Internet, got brochures, and even samples of some materials, and quite frankly, I would never have ordered the sleep number bed if they hadn't had a money back guarantee; i.e., try it free for awhile (except for shipping, if you sent it back). At that time, we lived way out in the country in Navarro County and I didn't know Select Comfort even had any stores. I ordered the top of the line at that time via telephone and it was delivered via UPS. It was easy to assemble and set up for use, and my back trouble was gone the first morning. For family reasons, we had to move back to town, rented an apartment for nearly a year, bought a little mobile home temporarily for a couple of years, before buying this house. So we've moved it 3 times; pretty simple to unplug, collapse and fold, then set up again in a new location. We did have one of the pieces of the foundation break after a couple of years, called on the phone, and the lady said they'd had a problem, but had it solved, and instead of just the one piece, she's send several new pieces that were stronger. They looked the same, but I guess it's a different plastic because nothing has broken since.

They had a single cordless remote that would work both sides of the bed (we have queen sized) or the corded remotes with a separate one for each side. I'm glad we got the corded ones, so we each have our own control on a nightstand on each side of the bed. Since you may not use it or change anything for months at a time, I'm afraid the cordless one might get lost or have dead batteries when needed.

And of course now I know of two malls in this area with Select Comfort stores.

Thanks to this tread I decided not to set an alarm and freaked out when I sleep 10 hours without waking. Maybe it is a "set" alarm clock and not the mattress that is the problem of resting well. :D

I have been sleeping on a water bed for the last 30 years. Tried the tempurpedic but it just wasn't the same.

That could be.:D If I know I've got to get up early the next morning, whether an alarm is set or not, I'll wake up and look at the clock at least once an hour all night:D I had to be at a dentist's office, about a 45 minute drive from here, Friday morning at 5:45 a.m. to get a couple of wisdom teeth extracted, but I knew there was no point in setting the alarm clock. I just kept looking at the clock and dozing off again until I got up about 3:30 a.m.

I bought a sleep by number and could not believe how rested I am when I wake up in the morning.

I get such great sleeps that when I have to sleep on a regular mattress I just can't, so I had to get one for the motor home and lately I even had to get a smaller version to take on the road with me when i stay in hotels, I plop it on top of the hotel matress. Ya I know, sounds nuts, but if I don't get a great night sleep I'm miserable.

I went from tossing and turning to having my head hit the pillow and I'm out. For years of getting bad sleep it was affecting my health.

Because with the mattress you can get super soft to super hard and anything in between.

How do I sleep at night? Ambien. I have to say that my sleep and my vision are the two things that have been the worst part about getting older...so far...I'm only 47.

I haven't slept well since college. Its either aching back and legs, worrying about something or sometimes I just can't sleep for no good reason. I remember enjoying sleep like a good meal. And enjoying sleeping late like a good dessert. Its been a long time. Now, even if I get a good night's sleep and have the time to sleep late I can't make it past 7 am.

Anyway, the ambien works well. I hate to be dependant on something for sleep and I haven't taken it for months but its nice to be able to get a good sleep when you need it.

Going to try one of those foam mattresses next. Have had several good expensive mattresses and they all work well for a while but not more than a year or two.

Down at my cabin a nip of whiskey helps too.

Oh, and there's the exercise thing too. The more I exercise the better I sleep. Unfortunately I hate exercise more than I love sleep.

Being I have MS the exercise is out of the question for me.That may be a large factor but it seems I sleep ok for a few nights on a new mattress only to return to this stage of 2 or so nights a week just can,t get cumfy.Hate to think I have to be drugged up to sleep, but maybe the only way.Shuffling out ot make coffee is about as physical as I can be and believe me I,m a guy that doesn,t give up easily.I really do appreciate the suggestions. The reason I posed it on here is because collectively there must be a few thousand years of knowledge, alot of us old croakers on here:laughing:Dave

I got better rest (was sleeping before) starting in 2004 when I started using a CPAP machine. The entire family was happy the house did not shake all night due my snoring.

Another odd coincidence. I just got an e-mail from one of my brothers, living in a motorhome, and he mentioned that he just ordered a sleep number bed from Camping World yesterday.

Me and my wife both have back pain. Several years ago we went mattress shopping and ended buying a National brand air bed that cost over 3 grand by the time we got it paid for. Everyone in the family thought this was crazy. I ask them, how much of your life do you spend in bed? Believe me, it is worth more! Aaron

We've had a Tempur-pedic for about 4 years now. No more back pain. It took about a week for that funky odor to dissipate, but nothing beats memory foam that contours to your body. Got the tempur-pedic contoured pillows as well. Don't forget about the importance of good pillows.

Considered a sleep number bed at the time but dismissed it as too gimmicky, although I'm sure it has its merits, being able to adjust firmness. Once you set it to a specific firmness number that suits you, how often are you going to change it? Probably never.

Maybe the ultimate solution would be to put a 3 inch memory foam mattress topper on a sleep number bed with tempur-pedic pillows!

Definitely glad for that ability because as I've aged, and gained weight, I've changed my preferred firmness 3 times.

Ouch. I hadn't heard of the National brand, but did consider the Nautilus. In 2002, I paid just over $1,616.23 for the top of the line Sleep Number bed (they've gone up a bit since then). I didn't ask my brother which model he ordered for his motorhome, but he did mention that the total will be nearly $1,400.

I sleep lousy. Sleep better in our recliner chair than the bed.

Fellas ...don't forget it could be your significant other that is waking you up during the night...does she snore, turn over a lot, get up to go to the bathroom ? How about your dog...does the dog sleep with you...gotta answer all these questions and then learn to have happy thoughts when you go to bed at night...Control your mind so that when you lay down you concentrate on the sky or ocean or a beach and block out all other thougthts...try it ...it works..

We bought a Dormia foam mattress four years ago and it is comfortable.

Looked at the sleep number beds but did not have the money so we bought foam. :D It is amazing how much air weighs. I could just barely move the bed when it was still compressed in the bag. Once I cut the bag and the foam filled with air there was not much moving of the mattress anymore. :D

Who would have thunk it? :D

Later,
Dan
