Re: How do you hitch a trailer?-3-Pt Drawbar

Our local Quality Farm and Fleet retailer (used to be TC Farm and Country) sells a 3 pt draw bar lock (at least I think that's what it's called). Let me try to describe it - when you attach your draw bar to your side links, the lock goes over one end of the draw bar, and also goes over one of the side links, effectively locking the draw bar to the side link and stopping the draw bar from rotating. I bought one a couple of years ago and it works great. As I recall, it cost about $12.

Hope my description makes sense. If not, let me know and I'll try it again.

Re: How do you hitch a trailer?-3-Pt Drawbar

I have a drawbar made for this purpose that came with the '49 8N Ford I got from my grandfather that is different from any I have seen. It is a drawbar with two arms that spead out and attach to the lower lift arms. Like a lot of things built back then (you can tell it's old) it is built like a tank and it is a factory job, not homemade. It really is neat, you can take it off and on in 60 seconds and I have wondered why no one makes them anymore as it is such a good, simple design. I'll make and post a picture of it in a couple of days. It wouldn't be hard to make if you have the steel and a welder.

Re: How do you hitch a trailer?-3-Pt Drawbar

Ed & Kevin,

Thanks for the post & info on the drawbar lock. I've gotten a number of SpeeCo items and had never seen that lock. Great Idea. Even though mine doesn't rotate {not on long enough...}, Hey for $12. that's a bargain for being even safer...

Thanks guys!

Hey B33, if your using a 3/4" shaft ball, use four of more 3/4" in lock washers as the shim and then one or two flat washers above and below the drawbar and everything will work OK. The lock washers just fit and center the shaft perfectly in the larger hole. I've used this setup on my old 1720 and my new 40D with no problems. If you need to get the trailer out away from the tractor, say to miss the tractor wheels when you turn sharp, then you'll have to use on of the three point (or two point as some propose) to do it.

djradz,

This past weekend my Dad hooked up a square baler to my TC40D and we had a problem with the drawbar being too short for the PTO shaft to hookup. The drawbar was able to extend another 8 inches or so by removing a pin on the bottom of the housing, sliding the drawbar back to a further position and then reinserting the pin. This has now also made it easier to turn sharp when pulling other items. I was looking for a way to modify my Dad's baler and my Dad was looking for a way to modify my tractor. His idea worked better...

Experience makes those old fathers pretty clever /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif! I'll keep that movable drawbar in mind for my machine.
