/ How do you engage 4 wd #2
Get it in some grass, and find out. Make a turn and see if the front wheels are pulling (you can see where they tear up the turf) Better yet, drive up a steep hill

I honestly don't know about the 1250, but I've had three 4WD gear drive tractors, two had the lever on the left, one on the right, but they all had to be forward for the front drive to operate

I'm guessing the OP probably doesn't have an owner's manual, that's why he came here for advice, not .....

Is it possible to trace lever linkage and see if it goes into a transfer case (or transmission) nearby where front drive shaft exits? If so that's probably your lever. As far as which way to pull it, like Gunny suggests, find some mud.

Thanks Gunny and CobyRubert. Just purchased unit from a police officer, he did not have owners manual and didn't know too much about operating. Been trial and error so far.
