How do \"search engines\" work?

Saw a few of you talking techy stuff in another thread so I thought I'd tap your minds on something I'm curious about.

How do search engines work? Do they seek out internet sites and strip stuff off their pages to collect?

I did a search on myself (bczoom) and google came back with: <font color="blue">Results 1 - 10 of about 3,600 for bczoom. (0.37 seconds).</font> I didn't know I was that popular /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Do they strip everything out of TBN threads? If so, how do they do that?
