Man its hot here! We're very familiar with hot weather down here. Temps in the high 90's are typical and low 100's aren't uncommon but that usually starts in late July or early August. Its been over 90 for several days already and the forecast for the next few days is in the high 90's and above 90 for the next full week!

Its supposed to be 100 in Columbia and word is the devil is already leaving there for his summer home Maine. Typically he hangs around until at least July.

And there is no rain in sight. I suspect my corn and sunflowers are doomed. We're still in an 'extreme' drought here (or something like that...maybe its 'severe') left over from last summer. But last year the drought came later. If its cranking up in May/June were going to be in for trouble.

Just griping about the weather. Been hanging out with farmers too much I guess. Must be contagious.

I hear ya. You're preachin' to the choir on this subject. It's already miserable here too. Same temps you state have been recorded here since mid-to-early May.

No rain in sight here either. We are in a drought...have been since 2006. It seems that when we do get a rain, it's 3" in 30 minutes. It all runs off. We need a tropical depression to park over us for about 3 weeks!

Hopefully, this hurricane season will help us out a little.

My cabin has no central heat or air. I've got a little window unit in the big room and a tiny one in the bedroom. Up to about 90 degrees they do okay but when it gets any higher they can't get it down below 82 inside. So it aint no fun there when its this hot.

You are so right about hurricanes. For all the bad they can do, they can also do a lot of good. A hurricane that burns itself out by moving inland with tons of rain can do great things for drought areas.

We're expected to approach 90 on Friday but quite honestly I'm looking forward to some warmth. Withthe exception of a 1.5 week string of days in April, our spring has been down right cold. Looking forward to the warmth. I love the feeling of some good hot weather for the first time...it feels like the pores in my entire body open up and all the winter sludge comes oozing out. It feels like a good cleansing.

Yep, we're having temperatures in the low to mid-90s each day. The only thing that keeps is from being plumb miserable so far is that it's staying windy (right now 24, gusting to 32 mph), but that breeze, too, will probably end by the end of this month. We did have a good rain back on the 27th of last month, though. I figure I got 1.88" although I think officially the airport north of me got an inch more than that.

N80,

The devil is going to freeze to death up here,....only reached 63 for a high today with a good Northeast wind to cool it down more. Sunny weather predicted for tomorrow, but the temperatures won't get much better until Saturday. Sunday is when the hot and humid air arrives. You are running warm weather early and we are running a little late for warmer air. We are looking forward to some warmer temperatures here, the furnace is still running at night and I'm already having nightmares about the price per gallon of fuel oil for next winter. It is 97 outside right now and has not rained a drop in 10 weeks, have not seen it this bad before. The 15 acre horse paddock does not have a blade of grass in it, all the alligators have wondered off looking for something with water in it, only good thing has been the total lack of mosquitoes.

Send it my way. I have continued to burn my woodstove to prevent freezing. Overnight lows in the mid 40s and highs barely past 60. Rain dripping from my ears. Corn grew up 3 inches and is stalled until we get some heat. Cold, dreary, windy, puget sound region.

That IS hot for up there. You got AC in the house?

And they just changed the forecast here, for the next 5 days 99,99,98,96,95.

I hear you! I had been working outside and just can't wait for the next few days! Don't shoot the joker...Just Joking!!!!

What coach once said something to the effect that Columbia was just a screen door away from h#ll! I did not do much planting in the deer plots this year because of the drought. Last summer was a bad one, and everything shrivelled up and died. I looked at some of the long range models this past spring and decided to put off planting...so far it does not look good. The poor farmers.

We've been over a hundred here all week. It's unusual even for this area. Yesterday was 107 and the wind was really howling between 30 and 50 mph all day. It was like being in a furnace almost. I'm no stranger to heat at all. I spent 10 years working in engine rooms on steam powered navy ships. THAT WAS HOT! On my first ship I came to believe 130 was a cool day in the hole.

I grew up in NC and SC on the coast and a few years in Tennessee. All I can say is if it's too hot to work then go fishing. I would. We don't have any fish around here and it's the one thing about this part of Texas that I absolutely can't stand.

It's been hot and getting hotter here in southern Indiana too. Temps in the low 90's for the rest of the week. More like July/August temps for us. We've been getting plenty of rain to keep the garden going great. All my plants grow noticably from day to day.

It was in the mid 90's yesterday.

Today 97. It will cool off next Wednesday when the high will be 95!

The forecast is for three days at 99 followed by two days of 98.

I brought in about 120 yards of mulch this spring. About 15 yards are in our garden and it sure does seem to hold the water in the soil. We have been getting almost an inch of rain every week but we have not seen any in a week or so. This year I managed to rig up a bunch of valves that allow me to run the soaker hoses in the garden. With the hoses and mulch seems like I can water less but this week will be the test.

The lakes are full around here but a few months ago it was looking mighty grim. Hope the severe drought does not return again. The cities are going to be very aggressive with water use this summer. They really did not let up when the lakes refilled.

We had been having such nice weather and then someone opened up the gates of h....ll. :D I had to turn on the AC last Saturday. I had put on the MX 6, greased it, set up the slip clutch and mowed for 4.5 hours. Got in the house and said I earned AC. :D It was the first day we had needed the AC. Usually we can wait another couple of weeks before turning it on.

I know we have had HOT and HUMID days in April and May because that is when we have birthday parties for the kids. Over the years we where just melting in the H and H. Last few years, including this year, the weather has been perfect. But we will pay the piper this week and next.

Its bad when the heat index is 105 and its the first of June.

Later,
Dan

Spent plenty of time in Oman, Bahrain and Qatar. I'll take the heat there over this lower Alabama stuff anyday! No humidity in the desert!!! I can't walk out onto the back deck for 2 minutes without coming in with sweat rings around the neck and armpits. I'll take dry heat over sticky heat any day.

Mark, what did you do in the Navy that got you to the middle east, or are you talking about a cruise to the gulf?

Well, as they say, that's a dry heat.:D

I know that's a joke but it isn't without some truth. When the humidity is much above 80% sweating can become ineffective. Sweating works by evaporative cooling. If the humidity is 80% or more, the sweat cannot evaporate and it just collects on you and you cloths. It still helps, but not nearly as much as if it were evaporating continuously without collecting on your skin and cloths. This means that you don't cool as efficiently which means that you feel, and are hotter than you would be if the sweat were evaporating. And what's worse, is that you don't sweat any less so you can get just as dehydrated.

Of course 120 dry degrees is still probably worse that 100 wet degrees. So no thanks to the middle east, or Arizona or west Texas.

I will say this though, my brother used to be a serious and avid hiker and he claims he could handle 120 dry in New Mexico better than 100 and humid here.

South Florida is Hot and Humid. Tampa and Orlando are worse though.

Where I lived in South Florida, I took two steps out the door, walked down the stairs, took another 5-6 steps to get to the truck and got in to crank up the engine/AC. By the time I did this it was time to go back upstairs and take a shower. :D

For Saturday, I'm still planning on getting up at my usual workday time to get outside somewhat early before the heat really turns on. Figure I'll mow for a few hours and then change engine/hydraulic oil/filters in the tractor. Not real hard work and mainly in the shade. But it will be close to 100....

Or I could sit inside, play on the computer and/or watch some videos. :D

Later,
Dan

Just very glad got some climate control in the tractor. 50's in the morn here and then it is a crap shoot as to what will happen in the afternoon. Supposed to be a huge line of storms that is headed this way that arrive just after it turns hot and sticky. Best thing growing is the peas!! They love it.

The middle east used to be like a good vacation for me. It got me off the ship!!! I traded my dungarees for cammies and had some fun over there a few times.
