My old hoses were 2 wire (for the wheels) according to the logging supply company. My new hoses are 4 wire.

Mistake?

Dear Carl,

Since your original hoses haven't ruptured, it is probably overkill.

4 wire hoses will also be much stiffer, which may cause problems bending in the tunnel, but others would know better than me.

All the best,

Peter

Don't know if it's a mistake but my brother in-law said it's much stiffer and won't really make a difference as far a abrasion is concerned.

You almost have to know exactly what you want before you talk to the hydraulic sales person. Their job is to sell biggest, bestest, wrapped in gold kind of stuff. I think they over sold you.

I have been taken several times by [ it shouldn't cost much. ] I almost choked when he said That will be $75.00, for a 6 ft hose. I hung my head in shame and paid the bill, vowing to never let them tell me what I need. It pays to have a working knowledge of things. A lot of times, I ask them if they can match Internet prices. Most times it works. I even down load a work up sheet with prices .

Carl,

I feel sorry for you, that someone would take advantage of you that way. We have about 6 or 7 hyd suppliers here in Jacksonville, and they can not afford to mess with people that way. You must live in a one shop town.

Napa is the only local hose builder. But there are like 7 of them 20 miles away in Longview which is the hub of Logging in the area. I am going there tomorrow to get more hoses if it is raining...

Please don't paint with such a broad brush. My job is to sell the correct hose to anybody, kowledgable or not.

Depending on the hose, $75 may not be a bad price. But then, you may have gotten ripped off. I have some hose that would be $10 for 6 feet. I have other hose that would be $750 for 6 feet.

Whenever anyone comes in and asks if I can match internet prices, I calmly ask them if the internet can match my knowledge, service, fast response, etc. If all you are concerned with is price, you are not an educated consumer.
There is no way that a hose shop can match internet pricing. There is no way the internet can match our level of service, among other things. When comparing a local hose shop to internet discount houses, you are comparing apples and oranges.

If you brought in 2 wire hose and they made you 4 wire hose, they should charge you 2 wire price. 4 wire hose won't necessarily outlast 2 wire hose, it depends on the application. I know of applications where 1 wire hose outlasts 4 wire hose. It is up to the counterman to ask all the right questions and for the customer to give all the correct answers. Also, depending on the 100R rating, it may have the same bend radius as your old 2 wire, or it may not. I do have 2 wire hose with a higher rating than 4 wire hose of the same size. I do hope that you didn't get taken advantage of, but it appears that you may have.

I find it contradictory that "There is no way the internet can match our level of service, among other things." and you include a link to your internet website in your signature. You are the internet. ;)

Yes, there is a link to my website, but I am not an internet based company. Many people here have links to websites but they are not internet companies. As anyone here that has p.m.'d me looking for products and/or prices, I usually steer them somewhere else. I have not made one sale to anyone on this site, nor am I looking to. Truthfully, the website has made nothing but work for me and has not brought a penny's worth of income to my business. When my year contract runs out, I will not renew it. Just because a company has a website doesn't make them "the internet." Take my website away, I have more money in my checkbook at the end of the month. Take Surplus Centers or DHH's websites away and they will have massive layoffs.

I do have enough knowledge about hydraulics, and I have learned this over time, and experience. I hope you are honest in your business dealings with educated and uneducated people. Knowledge is power, but it must be shared to earned a good reputation. Having been in many hydraulic shops, I do know that sales people do not give you many options. Most times, in a cash transaction at the counter, you do not know the price until he walks up and hands you the hose or what ever. Most times they do not volunteer the price before making up the hose.
I have read your post, and you seem to be knowledgeable in your trade. I appreciate the advise and knowledge that you
share.
You should understand though that most of the retires are living on a fixed income, and we do worry about pricing. We want value for our money, and not something that will last another 100 years. A $10 dollar hose will probably work just fine.
Business customers usually charge it to their company, and the guy picking up the items probably doesn't care what it cost.

As someone without pockets full of money, I can totally relate to you and everyone else purchasing hoses, cylinders, or anything else. If there is any question at all about price, there should never be a problem with the hoseman giving you a price before the hose is made. I never give a price out before hand. Mainly because the people don't seem to care. They trust that I will make them a good hose for a fair price. Not that I am hiding anything or, not that I won't give a price out. If someone asks for a price, I gladly give it out. If it seems like too much for them, I usually try to provide lower cost alternatives. Since I've been in business, only 2 people had issues with my prices. i've come to find out from other businesses in the area that I could have given them the hose and it would have been too much. And, if anyone here has any question about what a fair price for a hose is, feel free to call me here at the shop and I'll let you know. Also, just because someone is charging something to their business doesn't mean they don't care how much something costs. I recently just picked up a state account that dropped my competition because they were getting charged list price and more for everything. I provided them with price sheets and told them to multiply the list price by .45. That's 55% off of list! For as much business as they will give me, I'll give that type of discount. My competition thought that just because they're the state, they could rip them off. Not so, they had a sweet deal and now they lost it. Ah, enough, I have to go. andy.

Went to the real hydraulics shop today. Fun place. Mostly pro loggers in there buying stuff that blows my mind. The guy sold me a 2 wire 3100 rated hose. Both were cut just a nudge shorter than I would like but whatever. I got them on. Easy Peasy. Total cost for two hoses was $120...

Now to see if that has solved some of the leaking...

J_J,
We have a local hydraulic shop that will price out a hose, with all fittings before you decide if you want one or not. Nice guys. But their stuff is still very expensive. For custom hoses, I use them. For standard stuff, I use the internet.

   / Hose question #17
I believe that the hose-man should suggest a hose assembly equal to what you have, or give options and then quote a price, and then make the hose. Most of us wouldn't know the quality of the hoses he has to select from. Most of us want know if it will handle the pressure and has the right fittings.
