homemade gooseneck conversion

   / homemade gooseneck conversion #21
Hey bdog
I like your idea, here is what i am working on and tell me what you think. I bought a 20' gooseneck stock trailer, I am going to make a flatbed gooseneck trailer out of it, it has 7000lb axels under it that is 14000lbs, After stripping all the mettal off of it i found out the angle iron is very rusty, here is what i started to do, I put in 4" square tupe 3/16" thick, they run the 20' of the trailer and two pieces from them up to strenghten the goosneck, I also have the BW gooseneck hitch turnover ball, now with the 4" square tubes in i have 4" angle 1/4" think i am going to put in as cross memers, 2' apart, Tell me what is stronget squre tube or C channell you said you had 6" c channell but i think the square is stronger, Please fill me in what you think and Thank you!

I will post up some pics of the conversion when done. It is looking good.

I'd like to see pics of the process too if I could. I've toyed with the idea of doing the same thing with my old beat up tilt trailer. I have new axles coming for it this week, and I'm either going to put a new A-frame tongue on it or a gooseneck tongue. If I go with the A-frame, I have an equalizer hitch that I'll use. What are you using for the gooseneck coupler? Any I've seen are more money than what you are figuring for the whole project.

I can appreciate the well intentioned excess of caution expressed by other posters. But, I believe I understand your situation, and I think you're making a good decision. You're going to put the weight where your truck can handle it without overloading your axles or anything else (including your wallet). Plus I love pulling a gooseneck.

I know you're pretty far into this project, but make sure you build the gooseneck plenty high. It doesn't take much of a dip or bump to crunch the sides of your truck bed with a shallow gooseneck.

You mean a livestock trailer ? are you sure that the frame will handle the rated weight, without additional support of the superstructure ? Most manufacturers make a trailer frame a lot lighter when there is a stiff superstructure. Some refrigerated trailers dont even have a frame at all..
