with the help of Unfinished's reply, I found these. outward appearance is uncanny. yet these seemed to be manufactured commercially. the drive train is not the same either, but I think it mightve been the inspiration for the home-builts. the main page (fourth link) shows several varieties of crawler locomotion through the years. quite interesting to look through. I wish they would bring back some of these early models.

hey, that is a neat article you found there, I see the date as 2009, I wonder if the article though is a reprint of a much earlier one.? mine here is so closely resembled, I would think at first guess that it is a copy of one of these. this manufactured one being a clutch pedal style, would seem like a good idea. I wonder who evolved mine into the centrifugal clutch. not a great leap of imagination actually. mine is a home built alright, with chev and jeep parts into the drive train, but it seems logical that it very well was inspired by the manufactured version.

You could look at an old Ransom Crawler Tractor my Dad had one years ago it had pto & 3pl there is a bit of information online.

I have one of these rangers. Word of mouth,they were built in Pengilly, Minn. in the 40's had Crosley parts and mine had a 2o hp engine. I am looking fro a clutch yoke now. Yes it is a nice little woods tractor and fairly good in the snow.. apparently they like them in Alaska. I would appreciated any aid in finding the part.

I suppose you could have a machine shop fab you a new one patterned off the old one? mine didnt have that kind of clutch in it, it had/has a centrifugal clutch between the engine and tranny. shifting gears was no problem , as there were no rpm's active while gear selecting.
I had sold mine about a year ago sorry to say, or i could get you some close up photos of the clutch inline. i seem to remember it was a sprocket off the end of the centrifugal clutch, drive chain going to a sprocket on the tranny input. that part worked just fine.

that looks like a great project. With a 4sp tranny with pto window, hyd pump and hyd motor to the input shaft of the tranny, forward reverse in every gear would be an easy fabrication. This one I have to get on the drawing board

What a fun build that would be. Running a hyd pump with a hyd motor on the input of a 4sp tranny with a pto window would be an easy way to go. Might have to put a radiator with fan for oil cooling, but could be made to be a compact unit. A fun one to say the least.

Still dreaming about this. They use motorcycle engines to race small legend cars. Hook a driveshaft direct to the rearend. With this a clutch would be already there, a 5-6 speed in front of a 4sp would sure give some low gearing. Just a thought.
