My son decided to change the oil on my 1554,but drained the transmission fluid instead.I don't have a clue how to refill this.As you can tell,I'm not real mechanically inclined.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Is this an '09 model? If not, then the only way to refill it is through the same hole it was drained from. That might require removing the rear end.

There are others with first-hand experience that will chim in soon, I'm sure. Just let us know what year your tractor is, and whether it's an SLT1554 or GT1554.

The model I have is an GT1554 which is an 08 model.

How did he drain it? My understanding was that they are sealed units and could only be drained through a vent hole on top.

Shouldn't the decision have been yours not his?

YOu off your medication today or something?
Whether or not it was Godzilla that did it, the damage is done. The guy needs help. So let's help him out.
So, with that said I'm sorry to say I'm not knowledgeable enough to help you out with this situation. But someone will.

Hey CCinCt,theres a drain plug right below the oil filter on the left side of the engine.I'm assuming that it is tranny fluid because of the red color. The handbook says it sealed but a friend of mine says they have a drain plug there in case they have to work on it.

No, that's not the transmission fluid. Not sure why it's red, but I'd guess that shipping oil (break-in oil) may have additives that make it a different color.

Okay... first off, since you admitted to not being mechanically inclined.. what makes you think the transmission was drained and not the engine oil? Don't go by color alone... they add a fluorescent dye to the engine oil to make leak detection easier... just because it's red or pink doesn't mean it's transmission fluid. Pull the oil dipstick and see if there is anything on it.

Secondly, the '08 model year has a transmission filter on the lefthand side (as you sit) on the rear transaxle... it's under a metal protective cover... if I was to drain or add I'd do it though the filter and tilt the tractor to facilitate draining/filling. Just measure the amount the was drained (probably around 70 ounces, if it's bone dry) and replace it with the same amount (+/-) of a fully synthetic (like Mobil-1) 20W 50 engine oil.

There is no drain/fill plug on the transaxle that comes with the GT1554 model... the only exception to this is if you had the tractor serviced and they replaced it with a unit with a drain plug.

Yup. Check the dipsticks and see which was drained for sure. Engine oil dipstick is under the hood and and twists out and the transmission dipstick is at the rear of the tractor(and a pain to pull out...is not threaded like the engine dipstick).

Wipe the dipsticks off and reinsert to check the level as residual oil may be stuck on the dipstick when you first pull them out and may appear full.

Hey Cubuser,The drain plug that my son drained seems to be on the moter itself. It was red.I went ahead and changed the oil and refilled it.The mower still will not move.Must be doing something wrong. Thanks anyway.

Is the tranny lockout lever pulled out? Located at rear of tractor on lower right of back panel.
