If you really want to kill those plants fast, use Tordon. But it’s restricted use, so it can only be bought by a licensed applicator.

I use Crossbow on woody plants. The bane of my existence is bindweed, known to urban dwellers as morning glory. Roundup won't kill it. Dicamba won't kill it. 2,4-D won't kill it. Digging it out by hand won't kill it. I have one flower bed I have abandoned and just let the bindweed be a ground cover.
I have killed bindweed with roundup.

I buy Tordon "Ready to Use" in quart squirt bottles, at TSC. I use it for stumps.

Maybe where you live but not here , I can buy it at any number of farm and home stores right off the shelf, I use it on cut stumps just about every weekend.

Tordon RTU can be purchased off the shelf in most locations. The concentrate is licensed applicator only. The stuff is fairly expensive as a concentrate also. The big thing to watch with Tordon is the root translocation. Don't want to use it in places that may have desirable plants, because the stuff can travel through root systems a fair distance.

So a couple of observations. I mixed the ammonia sulfate in buckets of water before I added the roundup, it appeared to dissolve completely, then I added a couple of tablespoons of a surfactant. Then I added the roundup in the 4 gallon backpack sprayer. It’s been about a week and the stuff works but I can’t say it’s a huge improvement. One thing roundup doesn’t work well on is Mares Tail.

For some reason I used some of the ready to spray Roundup in the same area of the gravel driveway and it wiped out the Mares Tail in a few days. The jug is gone but what I read about it is it wasn’t anything special, as in no other weed killer in it except glyphosate. For whatever reason it worked better. It was getting a little thick was why I wanted to use it up, I don’t know if that made it work better.

I keep using the term Roundup because I’m buying the name brand name although in the future I’ll probably start buying generic. I think to get the results I want I’ll have to use something like 2-4-d also.

From what I have read, there are occasional issues with generics not being full strength, but I don't know how much of that is fear mongering to induce us to buy the branded version.

IIRC: mares tail / scouring rush /equisetum is an ancient plant that doesn't respond to most herbicides. You might try a French drain or swale to dry the area out. I have never tried it, but Chlorsuluron is a recommended herbicide for it.

All the best,

Peter

I have used roundup every since it has been out. You mix it according to what you want to kill. I have gone up to a 1 gallon roundup max to 10 gallons of water and it will kill anything!

I mix 6 oz. glyphosate and 3 oz. 2-4D in a 2 gallon sprayer.

It has killed all mares tail I have ever sprayed.

Glyphosate at that rate, by its self, will just stunt it.

Local Ag chemical supplier suggested 3 oz each of 41% glyphosate and triclopyr (Remedy) per gallon of water for a near total kill of all grass and brush. His large farmer brother recommended the same mix. Works very well for me. I have to be very careful around the cotton fields as triclopyr is deadly to cotton.

My experience with hard water and surfactant isn’t good. It immediately develops a milky scum on my 25 gal. tank strainer screen and clogs it. Southern Ag brand off Amazon.
