Help with JD gear box repair

I'm working on a friends JD and the problem is the front axle will not engauge. The arm that moves the slider is broken and the slider will not move into the gear manually. I have attached a few pictures and would like to know how the shaft/gears come out of the case. JD 1250 45hp

Looks like the shaft with the ball bearing should just pull out. Ball bearing may be what's holding it Don't see a reason to remove the other shaft and gear unlees it it needs to come out to fix the lever. It looks like it has a spring pin retaining it.
