Eddie, I know that you have hunted a bit by the heads that are in your shop, but i have seen wolf tracks larger than this one. Why do you say cats and bear don't leave clear tracks, see them all the time, also see them not so clear, depends on the ground their walking or running on.

There is an exception to every rule, but the rule of thumb is that cats keep their claws retracted when walking. Grizzly and Brown bear leave claw marks, black bears dont.

He is in Virginia, and to my knowledge, there are no wolves there. Dogs are very common, and the track looks like a large dog print. Lab or sheperd sized dog, but it could be any breed of that size.

A dog is the most obvious, and most common animal that will leave a track like that. While I can't say 100 percent that it's a dog, I'm 99% sure it's a dog.

I agree on the dog theory, my guess would also be large hound or G. Dane, 2008 model, Black and Brown, wearing Brown leather coller:D I have Anatolian Sheperds and they have tracks almost that size, one also leaves a print like that since she has long nails. Most coyotes I have ever seen, trapped or shot, always where in a "gait" unless stopped.

German shepard? my buddy has a huge one, paws that could easily be that big.

Also looks very much like a Basset Hound track, especially a full grown male. Their feet are humongous and they love to track.

Note these are very dangerous animals - a person can drown in their slobber.

Definitely could be dogs but it ould be wolf or hybrid wolf/dog coyote/wolf. No way it's to big for wolves.

Assuming your hand is about the size of my hand: that track is the size of a gray wolf track. Given where you are it is most likely a dog though.

Unless it was on a full moon. Then it could have been a zombie vampire werewolf.

Because actually, there would be no front prints, since zombie vampire werewolves walk upright. :D

BF62,

#1 - You are SILLY! :p

#2 - When I told my daughter no way it was a bear because there were no rear prints she said "It could be a Circus Bear, and it is just walking on its fromt paws..."

Therefore she is silly too!

That's either a Red Wolf, Gray Wolf or some hybrid. See how the claws are shaped, that and the size indicate wolf to me. What area if VA are you, any chance Reds from NC have migrated to the area from eastern NC?

I agree , we have lots of wolves here in Montana and my place has many coyotes. From the looks of that track it's a wolf. That track's big for coyote, never seen a coyote big enough to make a track that big. Maybe a large stray dog but from the shape of the track like stated above I still think a wolf. Probably just passed through there to get to where he wanted to go.
