Hi,

the blades are heavy duty saw blades. they turn at the same speed as a normal blade. Make sure of this as too slow will cause grabing.

the blades are over lapped to stop jamming.

Easy to mount as replace the bucket on any loader. set it out side the wheel as then can also do hedges. Have a tilt so that it can be changed on the move when the tractor moves due to uneven ground.

The hydralic motor can be spect fron a good supplier.

belt drive between blades.
thanks .good info. thats guys trying to gather up all the parts in the next couple of months . ill keep you posted.

If it was a belt drive unit, I would think you would need a tensioner between each shaft. But, probably not with a chain driven unit. But again you might, or you will get a bunch of chain slap.

Your sprocket / pulley sizing, along with the mating to a properly sized pump will take some calculating.

Since the blades are offset, would you run the sprockets / pulleys offset also, using a dual drive?

Belt driven would be smoother.

Unless you have already done so, I would be calling and asking some questions. I would ask what the blade RPM is, rotation, belt or chain driven, etc. Blade type and size also.

Interesting build, but you could be buying a ton of parts trying to re-engineer this thing.

This thing will have to be built with some tight tolerances. Having 6 or 8 large spinning blades rotating at 7000 rpm? smacking into tree limbs for hours on end...., having a shaft vibrate loose - someone could loose a head. Ouch.

Keep us posted.

I needed to let the thought process rattle around in my head for awhile.
So based on my 10 acres that I planted 1000's of trees on I did some rough calculations.
My acreage is 330' by 1500? more or less.
Using a single cutting bar and the tree rows 30' on center
It requires 1/4 mile up and back to trim
So 1/2 mile per row per pass
10 rows x 1/2 mile = 5 miles per 10 acre block

5 miles x 4 blocks = 21 miles with ends
21 miles div 3 mph = 7 hours per pass

Some years back I built my city based wood chipper which was a lawn mower with a plywood bottom no wheels and the branchs were feed into the top and it worked.

I heard the TING of the saw blades ( vid ) which I also hear when I use the blade on my gas weed eater.

This is the budget model unless you want to go big.

Buy lawn tractor deck mower spindles and mount 24" blades on them and a steel pulley on the other end.
use the common 24" x 3" x 1/8" blades
mount them similiar to the saw blades.
drive them with belts like a mower deck
all powered by a hydraulic motor
That ends model 1

Model 2
is smaller
use chain saw bars 24" in pairs
powered by a worm drive skil saw
powered by a 5000 watt electric generator

J J's posts are of a very strong design
Made in Canada

My chain saw design will work but the run hours per trim are too high
for bar lube use corn oil ( enviro )

im looking to build something similar to this, to help trim avocado trees. the fab works, looks really simple. need help on figuring out what type of blades, how to run them and what type of hydraulic motor to use.

You should seriously look at what the Minute Maid Orange Juice folks
did with thier orange groves when Coca Cola owned them.

Seriously-they made each and every orange tree in production into a box size topiary planting. This in turn allows them to use a propane or diesel scizzor lift to prune the groves when needed and make the harvest easier with orchard ladders making all the limbs uniform within the box size desired and use a small 4 wheel drive scizzor lift as well at the same time.

Using a scizzor lift would allow you to use an electric hedge pruner to trim the limbs or a chainsaw pole pruner as well with a large work platform directly where you see the work that needs to be done.

the thing with this is involves to much man hours, and too much time, i rather am shooting for the box type design as well , but i see this machine cutting my pruning time in half and the man hours as well.

does anyone know what rpm the saws should be running? were could I get the hydraulic motor's . I live in Mexico, but travel to chicago often. hopeing to start building with in the next couple of months.

Go to the home page and in the top left corner click on the add for Surplus Center. They have all sorts of Hyd items

I would be interested in your findings as I plan to make something for a similar purpose (grapes and blackberries pruning).

I have been mulling over using a discarded gas hedge trimmer and replacing the gas motor with a hyd motor. Then afixing some additional hyd cylinders that would allow me to raise it,anble it and change positions. I am still in the contemplating stage...

I also have been thinking about a bucket mounted sickle bar similar to the Samurai. Matter of fact, I have a Gravely walk behind mower sickle bar less than 4', which would be perfect for my usage. The hydraulic requirements would be similar to the Samurai.
I believe the Samurai is a nice attachment, just a bit too pricey.

The thing is i dont think a sickle bar would be hable to cut 3" branches, but this things is in the low $30's . There is no way i can spend that much
