My brother made the trip a few years back. I remember him saying that there were more private trails to ride on and that you didn't even have to get on the hatfield mccoy trails if you didn't want to. They rented a trailer from a local there and he showed them the trails. I will send you a private message with his email address and you can contact him for more info.

You will love that trail system.... My family lives in WV and the trail goes behind my dads house, and the trail is on top of the mountain... That mountain is very big and you can't even hear the ATVs when they go through.... My dad sold them the right-a-way to go across the top..... But their was a few that didn't want to sell when they was first extending the trail, but did later and after they sold it, they tried to block it off:rolleyes:

I always keep a tire repair kit on my ATV & a small air-compressor... and i have a 4-gallon fuel pack that lays flat on my front rack... and i also keep a first-aid kit on my ATV.

You can read this about the trail-system to find out some info.
Hatfield and McCoy Trails - Hatfield-McCoy Trails Official Web Site- Home Page

And then you should read this about the rules.
Hatfield and McCoy Trails - Knowing the Hatfield-McCoy Trail Rules - Trail Rules and WV State Law - Hatfield-McCoy Trails

They are very strict about safety on the trail-system.

Congratulations on the Grizzly!

I have several friends that have a Grizzly and they really like it... I have a Honda Rubicon.

*One other thing about what to take.

Do you have a helmet & goggles ??

That's a requirement on that trail-system.

If I'm riding around my property i don't wear one..But i always wear one & goggles on that trail and i would wear one even if it wasn't a requirement, because some parts on the trail are rough & steep.

PS,

Take a camera:D

Take money because a lot of the towns on the trails encourage you to ride in and spend your money on food and fuel etc. This trail system is ratede very high and if you have a GPS it is very handy if you decide to ride some of the off system trails. Keep in mind that there is more HM trails than you will want to cover. Oh and if you dont mind dont tell anybody about how great WV is we want to keep it a secret. Tell everybody we are all barefoot and live in shacks stuff like that, we have to perpetuate the myth or everybody will want to come here and then it wouldnt be "Wild and Wonderful West Virginia" it would be "Crowded and Pretentious West Virginia" I have to tell you it just doesnt have the same ring. You get the picture have fun while here but keep it under your hat.

Hey randall,

I was born & raised in Williamson West Virginia and proud of it!!!

I moved to Kentucky when i got out of school to work in the coalmines at age 18....When i left home and moved here i was barefooted:D

Don't forget to mention Greenbrier WV....You remember that movie they made about that place ??.... My family owns over 100 acres up there and it don't have a house or anything on it...We hunt on the property and also have family reunions there.... I can't get dad to build a shack on that property so we can stay in it when we go there to hunt, so when i go there i have to live in a camper:D

Yea a GPS would be a great thing to bring also.

Did you know they are going to bring the trail-system into Pike County KY ?

And i also heard that it would go to Virgina from Pikeville KY.

I never had insurance on my ATV when me & my brother would ride on those trails, and we was never checked from a ranger, but I've seen many riders pulled over by a ranger because they were breaking the rules.

The trails have a entry at different locations and then you will come to a exit of that trail & have to cross the "State Road" to keep riding that trail..... You only need "Insurance" to cross a "State Road" OR to ride on the "State Road" if you decide to go into a small town to eat at a restaurant.

I do a lot of trout fishing in Gilbert WV and the trail-system goes through the small town, and a lot of riders will ride on the highway to go eat and gas up.

This trail-system is very large and at some "entry's" you can ride and never have to go on the State Road..... You really need to decide on which entry you want to go to.

You don't need insurance to ride on the trails...Only if you ride on the "State Roads"

Hmmm.....no insurance??? I will tell you that I make the trip down there at least 2 times/year, and every time down we are working to drag someone's machine up over the mountain because they went over the hill. Usually when that happens there's not to much left of the machine as it always smacks a few trees on the way down. I think your $8000.00 Grizzly is worth another $100.00 bucks a year to protect your investment. Try Progressive, they are the cheapest and you can get it over the web.

Other then the basic stuff to ride SAFELY I take the following:
INSURANCE......dont leave home without it.
Winch
Extra tie-rod - Yes I do take one! Ever try to ride a machine with a bent or broken one?? If you have, you will understand where I am coming from.
Good tool kit, with all metric sizes.
Tire repair kit, with a lot of PLUGS. Make sure you slime the tires before going too. Do this especially if you are running stock 2 ply tires. Lots of rocks like to gobble them up, especally at Bear Wallow.
12VDC tire pump & a tie down strap to band the tire if you knock if off the bead.
Tow strap and 100' of rope to retrieve the Grizz when it goes over the hill.
Extra fuel not needed, you can ride into town to get fuel.
Lots of dry clothes, and a boot dryer.
Last but not least....CASH.

Those are the different items that most riders don't take, trust me I have used every one during one trip or another.

Most of all have fun and ride the BLACK trails, they are really challenging! Like someone else said, there's more riding down there off the trail system then on it, and very beautiful too. Just be careful, I have seen at least (3) people get air lifted to the hospital from a helicopter from the hill climbs just up from Gilbert, they are an ambulance magnet!

Insurance is a great thing to have on an ATV, riding or not... because it could get stolen also.

He wanted to know if he needed it before he could ride on the trail, and he don't need insurance to ride on the trail....But if decides not to get insurance, then he better take some fuel.

Insurance is required to ride on any state road in WV if he rides into any town.

I have insurance through geico on my motorcycle, ATV & boats.

For a ATV it's really not that much for a year.

Like Shmudda said, $100 a year and its really worth it.

I went through the web with geico and just gave all my info.

On my vehicle insurance, they were higher if i went through them on my ATV and the rest, and they wanted me to bring everything in so they could take pics.

bjess8,

If i was you & traveling with ATVs on a trailer, i would chain them up on the trailer... and also put a lock on the trailer coupler.

Where my dad lives in WV & even here in KY they steal ATVs a lot.... But it's probably going on everywhere.

From where i live, i can be at the Hatfield & McCoy Buffalo Mtn. entry in 40 minutes pulling a trailer.

Thanks for all the info can not wait to go leaving july 23 for the weekend,I think you guys are right and am going to get insurance put on the Grizz.Probably will not try the extreme trails being that it's my first time going down there but I know it won't be my last from what every one is telling me.
Again thanks for all the info.:)

On the insurance, i would try 'geico' first, and then get a quote from 'progressive'.... I found that geico was cheaper than progressive, but it may be different for your area.

Do you know which entry your going to go through ?

There is some places that you can stay at and be close to an entry gate.

Good luck and keep us posted.

The girlfriend and I go down and ride all the time. We stay @ RCH LODGING - Home great place to stay.

Take a first aid kit, you wont need fuel unless you ride the outlaw trails(wagon wheel) even then your close to fuel.

I can get really close to 100 mile on my griz with a full tank of fuel, and mine is full of mods (fuel/exhaust system etc etc)

I am a moderator for Yamaha Grizzly ATV Forum if you need any help with mods on the Griz thats the place !

I have 3k miles on mine and love it - power steering is great for trail riding.

/ HATFIELD & MCCOYS #18
3k miles on the new power steering is a good sign - assuming it has been relatively trouble free. I'm looking at a new Sportsman with power steering. We used to ride the private trails all over southern WV before H&M became popular. Riding up there is my single favorite thing to do above all other hobbies. Our rides started in a little town called Pageton and went all the way around Keystone, through the Wagon Wheel trails and who knows where else. We would easily clock 100+ miles a day and ride from daylight till dark.
Good times.;)
