I picked up this sharpening stone at HF for $.99
Sharpening Stone - Combination Sharpening Stone

And they are still making money on it! :laughing:


I sell the same ones under the tool tent they flew at 2 bucks a piece.

I had another vendor a knife dealer begging me to get him at least 100 of them and said 200 would be even better.

My boss had just called this past Friday and said is heading out next week to do a wholesale purchase for the coming season...

and I had forgotten all about that order. :shocked:

You guys don't even want to know the wholesale cost.

That sharpening stone is good and lasts forever. Just oil it up well. The ceramic rod sharpener, not so much.

I imagine the ceramic rod sharpener will not last as long as the sharpening stone but I've had mine for about five years and it still does a fine job touching up our kitchen knives. I would guess that a butcher shop would go through one every few months but a normal household can get many years of service. And, at less than three bucks a pop that means just pennies a year for a sharpening device that requires much less concentration than the stone and is safer to use. I would keep it on the HF tools that don't suck list.

I've got several of the 4-sided diamond hones; love 'em. I never oil them. I don't think that's advisable for diamond hones. I find they work and last the best if one uses LIGHT pressure with them. I DO wash them occasionally with a little warm water and dish soap.
