Guess the Barn Find

Thanks for the feedback. No didn't buy it, at this point with all the family members that have passed, not clear who owns it, and none live local.

I hate to be the guy that sounds like I'm looking for something for nothing. I've researched some, all you see is all the equipment I know of, only used for mowing.

So throw some numbers at me as is, what's it worth?

Value varies dramatically between a running tractor, and one that needs work. Never assume that it's in good condition if you cannot start it and operate it.

As it sits, I would only consider paying what it's worth as a non running tractor. Probably a couple grand. I also wouldn't fall in love with it, and have no problem walking away from it.

I was sure a John Deere would have had a JD green ROPS. Guess I was wrong.

It's Basically a late model Yanmar which was my guess what it was. Which it is. The first pic. I saw of it was covered and the FS sign on it. The grill guard I guessed but all the bumper weight had me guessing what all that was? Winch Etc.. The square Hood and Grill and older ROP's was the reason I thought I was pretty sure that's what it was! The Yanmar 2210 21 Eng. Hp. and the JD. 2210 23 Eng. Hp..

My feelings exactly here. Thanks for all the feedback.

Good advice so far on how to bring it back to life! From experience, I'd recommend one missing item.

Before you go to start it for the first time, have a way to kill the engine if it runs away. I had a barn find John Deere with a Yanmar diesel that I went through all the steps on a few years back. Go to start it for the first time and after bleeding the injectors it fired up - and reved out to max RPMs immediately! Turning the key off did nothing. Fortunately I was able to crush the intake air hose enough to choke the engine down to an idle and shout instructions to my helper on how to put it in gear and stall it out.

On that tractor, there is no separate fuel shutoff, instead it was shut off by sliding the rack in the injection pump past idle to the off position. Well, the rack had seized in full throttle position and since the throttle was connected to the pump via springs, there was no way to know without first disassembling the injection pump.

I would recommend taking the air cleaner off so you have access to the intake pipe and keep a bath towel or piece of plywood or some such thing handy to choke it out. Or, keep a flare nut wrench on the fuel supply line to the injection pump, ready to loosen it.

And have a helper there too!

Notorious Yanmar roll over was actually caused from the throttle Linkage loose at the Inj. pump and couldn't shut it off. They put a pin in it! And on my Yanmar they added a Decompression lever also! Holds the Valves open so you can shut it off that way ! It's the metal lever. Lower L. of the steering shaft. Used for the Cold starts so a double plus.

In all honesty, buying it would be doing the owner (whoever it is) a favor. The longer that machine sits there, the more likely it is for someone else to "find" it and help themselves to it.

As far as value goes, in running condition, I'd say $4k-$5k based on what's currently available on Tractor House. So subtract any replacement parts from that. If the wiring is good, you probably only need a battery, change of fluids, and thorough cleaning. If it had a loader, it would be worth +$9k.

Eddie had the same value I had in mind, $2,000. It would be worth more if it had a FEL and a mid mount mower. If it was running and cleaned up I’d say it’s worth $5k or more.

It’s more than a riding mower, probably equivalent to a modern 1023e. A small tractor but nonetheless a full 3 point and able to have an FEL.
