Our M/V Paul R. Tregurtha plowing through ice in Whitefish Bay taken 6 days ago.

Today the wind is blowing with 50mph gusts so the boats are largely off out lake.

This afternoon CSL Niagara made her departure through the ice with a load of iron ore pellets from CN in Duluth MN. She had a helping hand from Gtug Missouri on her way out of the Duluth harbor. She starts her journey to Nanticoke, Ontario before the big two-day storm starts tomorrow for us on western Lake Superior.

5 feet at a time! sure was a tedious task for the Tugs Kentucky and Missouri. I believe normally the USCG Spar would have taken most of the work for them. Rumor has it the cutter was having issues. They spent pretty much the night breaking the ice all the way down to the drydock so they could get the American Mariner out of Fraser and over to the CN dock to load iron ore. Keep in mind they had to break the ice from Howards Bay all the way to the CN dock as well! As I woke for work the next day, I saw the Mariner was pulling into CN around 06:05 AM! Talk about working Tugs!

Boats are sill off our lake waiting for it to settle down. The American Integrity is anchored just SE of Houghton in Keweenaw bay.

We've has some wind here, as stated above posts. Ya, its just a lake.

STUNNING PHOTO OF LAKE SUPERIOR WAVES! We all heard the winds over the last 24 hours. Wind gusts were as high as 70mph at the Duluth International Airport. Tone Coughlin captured the waves swallowing the shoreline near Tettegouche State Park.

Just one boat out there today who's under power and thats the American Century that's hugging the south shore zooming along at 4.5 knots. The American Integrity and Mesabi Miner, both 1000 footers are anchored in our Kewee bay.

I'm curious about how high a wind normally takes the boats off the lakes?

Just a lake, reminds me when i was pretty young, being born in Michigan, great lakes were familiar and first time i went and saw the ocean it didn't really dawn on me it was an actual ocean, until a bit of water splashed into my mouth. I remember thinking, 'Oh yeah, that's an ocean!' When some of my friends found out i was born in Michigan, they'd want to know what the great lakes looked like, i'd say, 'if you've been to the ocean, it's pretty similar'. They had a hard time wrapping their head around a lake big enough not to be able to see across it.

I was at a dinner with relatives in Portland OR years ago and a niece had a date there who was a Brit. I can't recall how this came up, but he had been on a flight over the lakes and said "those aren't no lakes! They are oceans".
