This might be a stupid question, but does anyone know why most of the Great Lakes boats have really blunt bows, when most other ship have much more tapered ones?
My first guess would be that it gives them the most cargo capacity in the same length.
It just seems like it would cause a lot more drag than a tapered bow.

They are more square than saltes so as to fit in the locks. Moving tonnage through them, is more cost effect than having a more efficient hull shape. Being more square, some still have bulbous shaped bows or maybe it would be called a "modified bulbous".

Good evening from Cleveland! I'm back with a pair of photos tonight. First up is the tug Joyce L. VanEnkevort with her barge Great Lakes Trader. They had 34,000 tons of taconite pellets to add to the stockpile at Cleveland Bulk Terminal. It's going to be a very busy year here as the dock boss told me they have 4,000,000 tons of ore scheduled! Yes, that's 4 MILLION! That's a heck of a lot of pellets and a lot of boats as well. Hopefully I'll be able to catch most of them. This was an "on my way to work" photo. Like usual, thanks for taking a look!
