@scott_vt Congratulations on the award for your service, and thanks for being there for your community. Thirty odd years ago, I was filling out the form for our local volunteer FD, when one of the staffers said something about poison oak smoke, and I realized I was going to be in a hospital after every wildfire call as I am incredibly allergic to it. Square peg / round hole.

@daugen Nice photo of the power of Mother Nature. We have a couple of sections on the county road we use frequently that are already cracking with earth movement and settling on both sides of us. I just hope that they don't all give way at the same time, or we are buying some trained pack mules as road repairs aren't always quick around here when road rebuilding requires geotechnical analysis and engineering design and sign off before reconstruction.

@sodamo Thanks, no you didn't mislead me. Building codes are building codes. A while back, I was looking at orchards around Hilo, and idly wondered what it might cost to add a house, permitting, land use etc., in alignment to allow construction.

A quick run into town to drop off items at Goodwill. We had been storing items for the next generation, and these are ones that weren't needed/wanted, so they can go to others who do need them. It was great to clean out the garage, at least for a bit. Then on to Costco for gas and groceries and back to home.

I can tell it's going to be a low energy day. The elderly relative is even more of a challenge this year, and I think often am reminded of Billy Crystal's line in "When Harry Met Sally" about women, "You're the worst kind; you're high maintenance but you think you're low maintenance." RIP Rob Reiner. That was sad news.

All the best,

Peter

The other house is pretty special. It sits on a slab and has a partial crawl. It was originally built on the slab then extended and built over decades later. And by built over, the original building sits under the "new" extended part, including the roof. A building within a building, not kidding. The issue is the crawl area needs some work around the entrance and is really exposed to the wind side of the weather, most all the time. All the plumbing is but a few feet inside the crawl area. A heat lamp solves the issue, as well as temperatures above 10 degrees. Fahrenheit.
A half sheet of plywood screwed to the wall would block out the wind.

I got a knock on the door yesterday. The rural mail delivery guy (a neighbor) got distracted and got sucked into the snow bank along my drive, while trying to bring a package up to the door. My Polaris wouldn't do it - spun tires on gravel (I need to get out today - since it's thawing a bit and level the ruts I created). I had to get the chained-up tractor to pull him out. He was in pretty good.

Good morning! 58˚F heading to the mid 60s light rain, more like a mist. Perfect morning to test out the truck's 4WD at the stop sign on the uphill turn on a wet blacktop road. It worked perfect no fish tailing like in the Ford.

Yesterday was the last FireWise clearing of the year and there were about 12 present. All morning I worked on one huge cedar tree that had all its lower limbs touching the ground. Broke two sawzall blades which were replaced by the community association.

BIL continues to recover and wants to go home, but with a feeding tube and breathing through a tracheostomy he will be in the hospital a long time. He still has two surgeries to go also.

Last nights neighborhood Christmas party/dinner was a bust for us. The vegan option was "don't eat any of the meat". No replacement was offered. We will ask a few more questions before we pay next time. Their "vegan option" definition does not meet ours.

Good Morning!

Cold, raining, not a very nice day but at least I am above ground so I'm thankful!

Have an event to go to later and so this is just a short post to say Merry Christmas to everyone and hope you are all well or at least recovering quickly!

Prayers for our Nation!

When I went to NC, my 23 acre farm with big house had all in taxes of 1800 annually.
This is why folks retire there. But if you have kids, better send them to private schools because that
tax level will not support quality education. The local elementary school in Washington NC was rated 2 out of 10, just
over the accreditation limit.

when I asked a meeting of several local supervisors down there why the taxes were so low, and they couldn't afford better schools and police.
I was told immediately no way they would raise taxes, or they would not get reelected and that was what was important. Sad actually.

poor schools often track with poor medical facilities.

As I'm sure you're well aware having lived there, once you get away from the coast proper (where all the money is), "down east" NC is one of the poorest areas in the lower 48.

Lol, I'm getting old I guess. You said Polaris and the first thing I pictured was this....

While they do it under the authority of government it's actually our own neighbors who are taxing us out of existence. Our local taxes are the biggest problem. School, local community college, city, Emergency Services Districts, County, Road District, etc. We personally do not have MUD, or HOA taxes/fees to contend with but we still have 7 different local taxing entities dipping into our pockets. Very often the money they are spending is for egregiously extravagant things in my opinion. Most often very little real need for a lot of the spending. It's amazing how once people get access to the public funds and can spend at will how they go wild with other people's money.
IMHO, property taxes worst of the lot. The person/family that pays a quarter what I do utilizes the benefits significantly more. It’s not the house/property, it’s the occupants. Here we have the added benefit of those that relocate from a high tax area who feel compelled to talk about how low our taxes are in comparison. ☹️☹️☹️

We have excise tax in lieu of sales tax. OK, could be worse, but applied every level. So when the governor and elected people play the food insecurity issue, why isn’t total repeal of taxes on food the very next breath which would be near 10% cost reduction?

And then the tourist taxes. Seems every year they find a way to did that mine a bit deeper and now they they lament tourism is down but can’t connect the dots.

Sun still mostly out.

Productive day so far.

Van run for about an hour, battery charged.

Got an answer on the heat traps on the water heater: yes it comes with them standard. So the ones I bought can be returned for credit.

Fuel cans taken over to the barn and filled.

Grabbed another 16 2 x 4’s, just stuck them in the garage as it was easier and won’t mess up the yard.

Torpedo heater refilled to the top, still have some left in one of the 5 gallon cans. Should last for quite awhile if it doesn’t get too cold.

Cleared out space to move the radial arm saw into the garage.

More clutter that was sitting out front moved into the garage.

Still have more of that to do but took a break to grab a hot cuppa and warm my feet.

It’s not the house/property, it’s the occupants.
Isn't there a "per capita" tax portion of your property tax bill? There is on ours! It essentially dings me for the number of residents at this address.

The vegan option was "don't eat any of the meat"
That's ridiculous, almost phony advertising

made my home made mushroom soup for tomorrow night.
made plenty and I like the little added zing of the smoked sausage in it.
I'm going to pick up some sushi tomorrow. Leaving room for a nice dessert.

not successful visiting the rv. Rv main batteries almost dead, and gen would not start.
click click
no surprise because when I put master on/off switch to off, some lights stay on.
Maybe that switch is wired wrong, should keep turning to see if lights go off in any position.

main Ford engine started ok, and I ran that awhile.
pushed a lot of snow off it and called it a day.

I want to go back with some tools and take both rv batteries out of the rv and bring them home
to put on a smart charger.

Kawasaki makes one reasonably priced considering 999 cc $24000 vs Polaris $35000 and up. I do not know how well they do in the snow
Mine's a 2011 800efi, and plenty fast/strong enough for what it is. It plows snow amazingly well, but it's just not made to be a tow truck.
