BEF, If I remember correctly the fittings on the marathon I installed are like a union nut with an o-ring inside so when you tighten the nipple it seals. Conversely when you loosen the nipple the fitting flops around and can spin, it may not be broke! Hope this makes some sense.

View attachment 782404

Yes, you are right. Couple more turns and the nipple came out, with the rubber attached. I saw that picture in the manual, it didn’t make sense at the time. Now I get it. I put the nipple back on.
On the fill side, last time I installed this water heater I used a non brass nipple, and it rusted and is stuck in good. I ended up removing flex pipe at top, and used new flex pipe on new water heater.
Nice to have hot water again.

Drove to Carlyle to pick up the battery early this afternoon. On the way back home, my back started hurting. All that twisting and contorting myself around the FEL to get the battery out of it's little hole took its toll. It's still in the garage ... a tomorrow job.

On the bright side, not only was it $30 less than the local store, but the lady at the register gave me a flyer that has an online rebate coupon for another $20 off. Score!

Glad you have hot water again, BEF.

Safe travels, Drew.

Plumbing is not my favorite thing. I bought some new ball valve shut offs to replace the gate valve type, but with all the running around today, decided not to go cutting pipes and soldering.

When working on wet pipes, a JetSwet is your best friend.
Without them, solder a nipple to the ball valve with a shark bite coupling on the other end of the nipple. Shark bites work fine on wet pipes.

Never seen those. I will just drain the lines down if I decide to solder in new shut offs.

I need a long manual pole saw for Mom's yard. Any recommendations?
When you say a 'manual' pole saw I take it that you're referring to a curved bladed 'pruning' saw... what I know as a "palm saw" as opposed to an extendable chainsaw pole saw.

I have both types and use both of them depending on the task at hand. Fiskar makes an excellent, extendable, 'palm saw'.

I don’t have first hand experience with this, but a couple of friends swear by them.
I use a telescoping Makita cordless myself.

I liked the features of a lot of the suggested pole saws and the one that had most of the features (Japanese blade, telescoping handle, and double hook blade) was the EZ Kut Kamikaze 20' extendable tree trimmer pole saw. It should get here by next week.

Looks good! I’m sure you will be surprised how often you will reach for it. I thought mine would be one of those things I really need only a few times a year at best. I use it a lot more than I thought I would.

Good stuff! Mine is exactly the same design, sold by "CutAbove" here in Aus.

The hooks really come in handy. Enjoy.

good morning all
just woke up, dying for cup of coffee, and car attendant knocked on door with a steaming hot cup. How marvelous.... (my upfront generous tip worked its magic...always glad to take care of the attendant)
am guessing I got about four hours of sleep. Problem is the poor condition of rails, some really big bangs along the way, reminds me of hitting those concrete bridge seams on rt 95.
I think once I get to DC, which should happen fairly soon as currently sitting in Richmond VA station. From DC to NY pretty sure track is in better condition for Acela trains.
about 5-6 more hours to go.

I had very good experience with my echo long power pole trimmer, but like so many of the more powerful gas ones, gosh they get heavy to use. I had my fireman farm helper in NC go up in a man bucket as far as we could on big Massey, plus using that 16-18 foot pole saw, really helped maintain things. But after two hours of that, even he complained of his arms and shoulders hurting.

I found an old pole trimmer in garage, the type with the rope and the cutter blade. Works ok on small stuff, but that razor sharp saw Don is getting sounds like a better idea. I always try to undercut a little to avoid tearing the bark off at bottom.

need to wash my face in this tiny sink to wake up, then may head down two cars for a coffee refill. Definitely takes some balance at times while train is rocking and rolling.

full moon last night followed the train along, shining through upper window into room.
will see if any of my pics came out

Coffee has finished brewing. 30 with mostly clear skies this morning. Heading to 40° with cloudy skies. Installing new TV went very smooth. Setting it up with my audio/video system not as easy. Ways to many adjustments. Best part is it works very well with my ear buds. Neighbor that is taking my old TV will be over for it today. Will do some more paper shuffling. Should be a good day to watch some NASCAR.
Full moon happens today at 1:30 pm. But it will not be visible where I live. This is best I could get this morning.

Prayers and best wishes for everyone.

Good Morning All.

Good morning. About 40 degrees headed to near 70. Friends nearby just getting power restored from the ice storm. Some without for 2-3 days. Power crews working overtime out in the country - miles and miles of lines to clear. Luckily here, on a relatively new branch line/s. Only 2-3 flickers power loss.
Today will try to spray the Henbit in yard with 2-4D or Glyphosate and edges around / in gravel drive. More rain coming by Tuesday.

Hope all have a blessed day.

Good morning,

19°F now, highs in the low 40’s mostly cloudy, winds SW 10-15 mph today. Much warmer than yesterday lol. Drew, thanks for sharing the warm weather you’ve been enjoying.

The mrs beef stew was a good feed yesterday 👍. As usual my contribution was veggie peeling and and clean up, in no way do I resemble a chef! (will work for good food tho)

Today plans include a dump run this morning and play pickup sticks for awhile.
stay safe, well and warm

31 going to 54. Should be a nice day.

The more of those Texas ice storm pix I see, the worse that storm looks.

Yesterday, I cut up a tall 13" cherry tree that broke off about 20 feet high from our wet snow/ice storm last year. It fell about 10 feet from an old fox den that 4 skunks have taken up in this year (based on trail cam pix). So, I put it off, but with half of it on the ground, I needed to gather it for firewood before it rots. So, nervously, I'm parking the tractor about 8 feet from the entrance hole, and walking back and forth with rounds, hoping the noises would keep them underground. They were very cooperative, so I left them a couple of apple cores and too ripe raspberries for treats.

I tried to use the frozen ground as a good time to move a pallet of wood up to the porch, but the sun had already thawed it, even though the temp was still below freezing.

Nice job on the water heater, BEF.

Kilroy, hope you had a good hike. I looked up Rabun Bald...looks like a nice mountain.

Sounds interesting, never in 56yrs. of life have I ridden, much less slept, on a train.

Good morning, the low temp is 20 and the high to 30°F. Wind SE 6 mph. Snow. The guessers are guessing a couple of inches.
Almost a 40° difference in temperature between yesterday and today.

I will go out and plow at about 11 A.M. The powers that be are saying that Tuesday we will see about 36°. If that happens, then I will go and scrape the windrows at the ends of driveways that people have been driving over and packing down.

That is my day all planned out.

Have a safe day all

31 outside this AM, heading to lower 50's.

Should be a good day to finish up the vinyl on the one side of the Milk House. Managed to get the windows trimmed out yesterday, late. With the ground frozen the ladder work next to the milk house was interesting as it would not sink into a level position for me as I climbed up it. Made for some wobbly experiences.

I did manage to recover a load of firewood, and left no tracks or ruts into the back forty. That was pleasant. I may go back there today just to walk the back property line, it's the only woods we have and it is always a nice experience.

Got the door off Market Place. Need to get with the wife now as far as what goes where for the main entrance and walk way entrances. I have a feeling the main entrance is going to be moved since it is a steel door too and I have one wooden door available. Looks like more carpentry and door hanging is in the future.

Hope all have a great day. Be safe. Stay warm. Weather looks to be warming up this week for us.
