Good morning!!!!

3F with haze and wind @ 12:00, might get up to 12F today if we are lucky.

Was 4F when I got up, then dropped back down to 2F, and now back up to 3F with the wind just howling (out of the WSW @ 27 mph)

Felt pretty drafty and cool in the house without much on when I got up but not so bad now with some clothes on. Thankfully no power issues.

T'stat is set on 74F but it's not able to keep up, only makes it to around 72F before the furnace cycles off. Can certainly live with that.

Woman said She saw the deer strolling through out back, feel bad for them. Might grab a bucket of corn from down in the basement and dump it outside if the wind lets up and I get inspired later.

She also reported that all the birds were back at the feeders this morning, suspects that they have been cleaned out again. Probably will refill those as well.

Got torpedo heater hooked up in the garage last night and fired it off. T'stat on that was reading 28F when I switched it on (since it was closer to the ground than the thermometer I brought up from the fish room) Torpedo heater had it warmed up to 57F in about 10 to 15 minutes at which point I shut it off. It had fallen back to 37F in a couple of hours. No idea what it is now, other than it's probably damn cold.

Got more staining done last night along with some assembly work, still have a little more left to do today.

More YouTubing on building a woodworking bench as well.

We are supposed to go over to neighbor friend's for dinner tonight but will have to see if we can get the doors on the car open as they are likely frozen shut. If we can't, she may stop by on her way back from church and pick us up. Woman is baking her a custard pie. Looks like we'll be getting a pumpkin pie ...

Time to go get the second cup.

The waste to energy plants were a good idea.
I would like to see some composting land fill style methane production plants built. Separate out none composables,
then compost the rest in bunkers with methane collection systems, use the methane and then seperate the composted material into usable compost landfill the small amount left.
Or else get back on the nuclear energy train.Rewww
Lou, remember the LA Ca landfill had a couple of large engines fueled by Methane from the land fill driving generators

35˚
We are finished with our 48 hour freeze and the low was 12˚ Friday morning.
No low pressure ng problems this morning, so we only lost pressure for 3 hours Friday morning.
We will have another four freezing nights only before the temps return to normal (around 45-65˚ for Dec.)

A lot of the waste to energy plants have marginal economics because of competing landfills. Waste tipping fees in areas with limited landfills can be higher and that is where WTE can be competitive
some of the islands in the Caribbean I believe have really committed to burning up their trash instead of dumping it in the ocean.
like so many things, we have the tech. Paying for it is something else. Like how would Haiti in its anarchy ever be able to afford it?
makes you wonder where all the trash in Haiti is going to....

but I know where mine is going. I've mentioned before I used to boat for many years going past that landfill down on the Delaware River.
It just kept getting bigger, becoming a mountain along the banks of the Delaware. Seagulls loved it.

stopping ocean dumping would be a great place to start.
this was a big deal with cruise lines, they used to dump all their trash and sewer at sea, maybe even used motor oil in the old days.
More than twelve miles out, who cares. Tell it to the cod I'm about to eat in my fish sandwich.
I bet our military was equally bad about this until recently.

Many cruise lines today are like we learned in boy scouts. Pack it in, pack it out.
Leave things better than you found them.

when I had my boat in the Philadelphia Marina, every Saturday night some business would burn an incinerator and it left white sticky ash over everything the next morning.
Certainly weren't any scrubbers on that stack.
burning only makes sense if it doesn't create other major problems. Today cost of energy might be a show stopper. So we really need to burn our trash.

A new agreement was signed with the Danish government for the Thule airbase in Greenland recently. It is shoring up the buildings and runways damaged by the thawing of the permafrost and investing in a counter to China and Russia getting ready for shipping lanes going North around the world. Had BIL that flew out of that base and a brother that worked in the area

Lancaster county has a waste incinerator. I read that they had to upgrade their pollution controls this year. I don't know what happens to the energy that they generate.
Some farmers here have been building manure digesters. I guess they use the energy on the farm.

Many of the WTE plants can not afford the added pollution control equipment and if power sales and tipping fees do not generate enough income they will go out of business.
In Ohio few counties away from BEF's dad we added 1.8 billions of pollution control equipment to an existing coal fired plant to comply with EPA regulations. That was my last project

That would be a few counties north of my dad.

I got email notice to cut back on electric usage.

Went to Costco to pick up a few things, including another UPS. This one so I can take my others out of service 1 at a time to get new batteries for them. Pretty busy in town.

Good evening! 7pm. 17˚F wind chill 8˚.

Whipper's evening walk temp was a windy 19˚ - short walk.

Went by the garden but all the kale was crunchy frozen. On the way out the push button gate-unlock would not work - frozen - felt trapped. 8' deer fence all around. I went to golf cart gate, it has a tumbler combination that was still moving and my almost frozen hands could barely get the right combination, but I got it unlocked and escaped. I call the President and told him and he will send out an e-mail to all about the exit button not working in the cold before someone gets trapped and frozen.
YIKES!!
Carry a cell. What if you slipped and fell?

A very good Christmas morning to you all. Lovely warm summer morning here. Odd to hear most of you guys having heating and electricity problems. I hope it gets sorted for you.
Grandkids up early and playing with their new toys. Gave the dogs some treats.
Still getting over my fractured leg but I can get around sort of OK. I get tired quickly. Hands nearly healed. Just a bit tender in places. Trip to the dentist was cancelled as he came down with alligatorus. I have to put up with toothache for another 4 days.
Hope you all have a safe and enjoyable festive season.

So I’m back with my puppy in a nice warm house.
Today’s project hit lots of snags. Had to get torpedo heater to thaw greenhouse, unfortunately once thawed, burst pipes became leaks.
The good news was that they were fine with bypassing the greenhouse heat loop. So I cut it out and sweated in a piece of 3/4” copper.

Bad news was that there still was no 240v power to run the well pump to refill the boiler. All I had was the little Honda that only made 120. I went home to get a submersible pump and some buckets of water, and by the time I got back, the power was on, so it was a piece of cake to get things filled and the air bled out.
I have to say that I think that today was the first time that my hands froze to copper pipe. I hope it’s the last.

So they have heat and don’t have to worry about the greenhouse freezing anymore. And I’m home playing with Zoe.

You guys make me feel good, but the reality is that I have the tools, supplies, the knowledge and the time to help others, and have a large group of giving and talented friends that all help each other, as we all have different skills.
However, I have no time for fools or selfish people.

14°F, Wind WSW 21 mph. More snow coming. The block heater for the tractor is already turned on. I will be plowing the additional 6" we got since the last time I plowed later this morning.

77°F in my man cave. The lights flickered a couple of times last evening, but we didn't loose the power. I had bought a back up genny last month because the Dayton genny was still out waiting for parts.
My buddy told me that his brother bought a whole house back up genny system with automatic transfer for $14,000.oo installed.
I would do the same IF I could find one that ran on diesel and could go where I want it installed, about 75 feet from the main panel.
Generac puts out one in the 'states that runs on diesel, but up here they only offer propane or NG. I wont have either one on my property.

Snow plowing all done for today...
