I have a manual thumb on the hoe on the Kioti and have been contemplating making it into hydraulic. I am now rethinking that idea.

Why are you rethinking? Other than the obvious issues with adding in an additional hydraulic circuit. . .

Good evening all. 26ºF for the start, overcast, light breeze, Light wind, overcast with fog mid morning, clear afternoon, and high temp was 46ºF. Men's Meeting to start day, rekindle fire in insert, putter,, then hook boat batteries up to charger, fill wheel barrow with wood, fill out golf club membership and wife wrote check, Bike ride, could not get good power output so slow time result. No nap . After dinner, check batteries, they were charged, secured boat top, filled little wood wagon, replace tarp strings to get ready for wind. With wheel barrow and wood wagon full I have enough wood for 3 + days. Now if I could work out moving more warm air into master bedroom.
Randy(wag) I got one if those super folding ladders. It had 6 or 8 positions an an owners manual. I only use 3 positions.
Drew good to hear mouth is improving. Hope you get your fixings for cider. I hear you about not eating everything that comes your way, being farther from family and long time friends has helped. At least the heater has a thermostat. and nit running full bore.

Drew I have ridden by several large feed lot in Western Kansas, Yup they smell, if 2 or 3 adjacent they get really strong. Sorry about the cold and your arthritis, my wife says same thing.

I have one of those Caframo fans on top of our stove for moving more heat around, but before I got that, I used a 4” 120v muffin fan from an old 386 PC, and when the temps drop far enough I still point that at the stove for some extra heat extraction and circulation. Now, I also remember years ago in some home improvement catalog there was an item that basically was a muffin fan in a tube and you could install it in the wall between rooms (usually over a door) to move heat into another room. Perhaps something like that would help?

God has given us another chance to get it right (or at least not screw up too badly).

Happy First Full Day of Winter!

stove data update: woke up about 40 minutes ago, stove had about 4 inches of coals, flue temp 225, stove temp 200, upstairs 74F downstairs just under 70F. Added two small pieces of wood and opened the air to 20% to add a bit of comfy before MrsKilroyJC got up.

I also have an old black/white speckle enamel roaster and an old brown enamel 6qt pot with water for humidification. Generally, I go through about 5 to 6 quarts in a 24 hour period.

I started another thread in Rural Living, looking for photos of weird things people find on their property or out in the woods in general. Check it out, add your own photos to it!

Habitat Restore had all their Christmas decorations at a 90% Blowout Sale. I picked up 9 sets of miniature lites for $2.80. Big score for me was an antique Wilkinson 7-Day Razor set. It is still in the car, so I will have to photograph it later. Picture a safety razor handle that takes a 1-1/2” section of a straight razor - then have one section per day. The theory is that it gives sufficient time for the stresses in the metal to relieve themselves, for a better shave. Instead of stropping/honing before shaving, the blades are all sharpened in advance so they are ready to go (and stress-free) and you strop AFTER use. Not that I shave every day, but the set was complete in its original metal box and I have paid more for a single straight razor than what I paid for the set.

today is last store run before Christmas, fuel up the vehicles, set up the manger for Christmas, make a gingerbread house with Mrs., maybe sit in front of the big PC (ugh) and do some 3D designing for an indicator light pod for our side-by-side. It is street legal, but the turn signal mechanism is not self-cancelling, and the indicator light is on the base of the leve housing, and the view of the light is blocked by one of the steering wheel spikes, and I hate driving down the road behind someone whose blinker is on unnecessarily. . . And I hate more when I’m the one doing it. . . So I plan to make a pod for two LED indicators, one red, one green (port&starboard) to wire in and mount at eye level on the front vertical tube So I don’t go down the road looking like a Floridiot

I guess I didn't post my first post this morning...anyway, the old oak tree above lost its top during the big windstorm last spring, and I decided to pull it down yesterday...4 wheel drive, 2 chains, and a prayer. The "after" photo is before I sawed the branches into firewood and cleaned it up. I still have a large branch to pull off, but it is still attached, so will be a tougher job.

34 cold rain this morning, and lots more rain on the way. Wish it was snow.

Mostly, like you, I spent some time yesterday prepping for the big rain and hard winds predicted.

Don, I wonder if those winter strawberries have developed a more intense flavor. Hope it warms up for you.

Have never shaved with a straight razor. I remember Wilkinson Sword blades, always bleeding when finished.
today's razors with five or six blades, pretty advanced actually.
Most electric razors irritate my skin, but blades don't.
I keep my beard at lowest height setting of Wahl clipper. Just enough to keep me warm on days like this.

Good morning! 46˚F and the cold front blows in at 11AM by 4 pm we will be 32˚ and by morning 14˚. The strong winds will make it seem colder.

Plants are in front of the garage need to slide them inside and cover a few more hedges. We have natural gas as the main heat but the electricity of course runs the fan. The gas stove can be lit by match if the electric ignition does not work - just reminds me, I have no matches, store run.

At least there's no rain/snow in the forecast.

No plans to day other than staying warm and comfortable inside

We use the ceiling fan to move the air down from the high ceiling in the room with the Jotul stove. Plan to change that stove to a larger one. Mass is your friend in wood stoves and will allow longer burns.
The Jotul is smaller and need to be fired hard to heat enough on cold days.

Mostly, that Milwaukee saw base uses the standard Milwaukee band saw and was widely used by pipe fitters on job sites. It does not need a table since legs can be mounted using standard treaded pipe

Popg, I have looked at cold saws but never got around to buying one. I have a 14 inch cut off saw.
How did the Makita saw work out for you. Assume that the same batteries will work as in the chainsaw?

The saw worked out amazingly well. It’s not a true cold saw though. A cold saw blade is under 100 RPM and is flooded with coolant. This is 3900 RPM no load and cuts dry. A typical wood cutting saw is around 7000 RPM.
It cuts 3/8” steel effortlessly with no sparks. Chips are quite warm, but not painful if they land on you. I have a large stationary horizontal bandsaw that gets used regularly, this is not to replace that, but is great for cutting a up sheet of steel. The project that I bought it for was cutting square tubing that was already welded together into a structure, and wouldn’t fit in a stationary saw.
And yes, it uses the same 18v LXT batteries as the chainsaw.

Maybe a sprinkle overnight tonight, Then dry through the weekend, and rain every day for the rest of the 10-day.

Tried to catch up on this thread yesterday, but you folks have been real busy. Will keep trying.

Only one glitch on the ride down to Lompoc last week when the bike went on first reserve. It usually lasts at least 20 miles, but that time it went 3. Then second reserve lasted another 3, which should have been another 20. Then third reserve never really caught on, but I was at a gas pump by then. Tank only took 4.3 gallons, and holds 6.3, so there's a problem with the fuel supply. Made due by stopping early for fuel the rest of the trip, and I'll look into it once it starts raining.

Other than that, my friends and I enjoyed a long weekend at a beach front cabin. It had all the modern conveniences: very quiet heat pump heating, small electric hot plate and microwave oven for cooking (we brought a mini Weber for BBQ), small water heater with just enough capacity for a quick shower, even WiFi. Weather was brisk overnight, but mostly sunny during the day, so we got in some hikes up and down the beach. And probably ate and drank too much, but no one seemed to be paying attention.

On the way back from the beach we looked at a new wind power site on the south side of town. We found a couple dozen of the biggest windmills I'd ever seen sited along a ridge that's mostly out of sight from town. Each blade must have been at least a hundred feet long, and they were using a couple very large cranes to do the assembly. Very impressive installation.

But maybe the best part was how the hills are starting to green up from the recent rains. A very pleasant change from the parched brown of summer.

Yesterday I tried to get through my email and maybe made it half way before I had to get away from it. Spent the rest of the day pulling dead trees out of a pile, limbing them with the chainsaw, then stacking the logs for later processing. Got maybe a dozen or so done, and made lots of wood for the campfire in the process. Got that tucked away under a tarp just as it was getting dark last night. And that was at about 5PM. A reminder that the days will be getting longer from now until next summer.

Good morning,
Lows overnight were 33F, that happened at midnight and temps have been rising since under cloudy skys. Presently it is 50 with forecast high of 54. Rains due in about 10am this morning. Earlier in the week they were forecasting ~2" of rain, but they have dropped that back to only 0.8".

Looking4new- I had a manual thumb on my Kioti CK30, when I got my Kioti DK40 I added a hydraulic thumb to the BH. I will NEVER go back to a manual thumb again.

Shop pad corners marked, found that when site work was done they didn't center the back driveway with the back overhead door. So I moved the building a little to compensate.

Mini-split errors were indeed operator induced. I have 2 inside units and 1 outside unit. Turns out I had one inside unit set to heat, the other set to cool.... that can't happen. System, and me, happier with both being set to heat, especially with single digit temps due here Saturday.

With the chilly rain on its way, I think today will be spent in the house doing some more unpacking from our move. Wifey is starting to grumble about me sorting out my shop and not doing anything in the house.

Good Morning
It’s 27 and warming up to almost 50 as the rain moves in. It’s supposed to rain until tomorrow evening, and the the temperature drops like a rock for the next week.

It would be a miserable day today, except that I got this picture from the vet that is driving my puppy up from NC, just before they left early this morning.

Yesterday was cold, didn’t do anything outside except go to peddlers village with Wife, son, DIL and grandson. We had a nice dinner and a good time overall. But it was cold outside.

Today, we have a few things to do to get ready for the puppy, we have my daughters dogs for the day because she is moving, but we will take them to her new house before the puppy shows up.

Other than that, a leisurely day until I get a phone call, text or email with something else to keep me busy.

And I’m glad that all this precipitation will be liquid. Might be a bit of snow at the beginning and end, but it will be 50 or so for the worst of it.

Very gray out. Got some ingredients for wife to bake cookies, she did linzer tarts last night.

Went by Peddlars village so she could get some cookie cutters and stamps last night. Lights look good, very crowded. Saw some friends there, so that was fun. Probably just missed you PopG.

On the way had to stop for the New Hope Steam train, fun to watch it go by, wonder how crowded with $100+ tickets.

Rip - hope the surgery goes perfect and she heals up quick.

This is the bigger buck, he does not like to be disturbed, so we give him wide berth when he comes through.
