Good morning! 20 now, high of 31 today. Not sure about that prediction.

Frits will appreciate this one….

I never could grasp Turkish. I dealt with a steel mill a lot in SW Turkey. I knew the people and their lack of maintenance. I also knew the broker who sold machines there. He had an interpreter that I took a dislike to and didn’t trust what he was telling me. The broker had a service company that was very good and I had become friends with the owner. Sadik was smart, learned I could trust him. He understood English, but could barely speak English. But he let me know I was right about interpreter.

Near the end of a long visit to the mill, we had a meeting with their equipment people. I was tired and was really irritated with our broker as I felt his company was not being supportive. The meeting started off poorly when I told our broker and his interpreter that the only thing wrong with the machines was “the mill has no f@#$ing maintenance program”. Being in Turkey for a first thing in the morning meeting, they served Turkish coffee. I drank my first cup straight, no milk, no sugar. I asked for another as the meeting was really testy. I ended up drinking 5 cups of Turkish coffee. I noticed the meeting started going vastly better and the mill people even admitted they had “no f@#$ing maintenance program”. After it was over, Sadik, owner of the service company, had one of his technicians (who did speak good English) tell me the tone of the meeting changed because the mill people decided that anyone who could drink 5 cups of Turkish coffee straight was to mean to argue with.

Shortly afterwards, Sadik was awarded a contract to do all of the service and maintenance on their mobile equipment.

That wasn’t the only interpreter that I had trust issues with. One in Greece convinced me to try to pick up some of the language.

Everyone stay safe out there!

Great story. Glad it worked out. Many times some acting is needed to get the best outcome like impressing them with the coffee drinking.

Having had my share of turkish coffee, I think they are correct that at 5 of them they should give in!
I would probably have needed a defibrillator after 2.

Is Turkish coffee anything like espresso?
to make turkish coffess you put coffee grounds in a small pot and boil then pour into a cup (simplifying a bit). It tastes strong like espresso, but with more caffeine.

One thing I loved there and in Egypt, was the mint tea. Offered in small glasses almost everywhere you go, many times for free at shops (big on hospitality). It is regular tea with fresh mint and a drop of sugar. Closest I could get here is to buy chinese gunpowder tea and grind in home grown mint. Great on a hot day.

Our company had an office in Cairo. Not sure if they still do. We were doing work for the state utility constructing power plants. And one of our kids spent a year at American University of Cairo. I used our company in Cairo to check on her after a bus bombing in the Sinai desert. Fortunately she was on a different bus. Have many stories from that time

Good Morning
It’s 26 with a high of 36 for today under clear skies.

Yesterday was a good day, a little breezy and cold, but better than rain or snow.
We did get pictures of the movie set, they installed a roadway and parking area out of 3x12 plastic planks to access it from the neighbors property, as the wanted to preserve it’s abandoned lane for a scene that they want to shoot.

I was told that they originally wanted to burn the house down for a scene, but that the environmental study showed that they would have to do a lot of remediation first, so they are building additions to it that will be burned instead. That can be seen in the second picture, the left most building is the house.

Stopped my my neighbor selling Christmas trees, and things are not going well there. It looks like he will have close to 200 cut trees left that he will have to chip or most likely burn. And he had 200 less trees than he did last year. He is thinking that all the news talk about high prices and low availability scared people into artificial trees. At this time, his prices are lower than last year, so it doesn’t make sense.
“Best economy EVER!!!” according to some dude on TV. . .
