It was time. Actually went fairly easy. Unusual for a plumbing project for me.

Same here, Rich. I replaced the line from the valve to the tank this afternoon, and had visions of water spewing all over the bathroom. Somehow, I managed to avert the predicted catastrophe. Guess I accidentally did it right. I've always hated plumbing jobs, and they typically hate me right back (me and the plumbing in this house have a harsh history).

Been a good day tater.
Attended both services, and taught Sunday School in between. We have a wonderful Baldwin grand piano, and the pastor's wifey was playing. She also sings like an angel. That was 1st service.

For 2nd service, my daughter got to play along with the husband/wife guitar duet. They had a 4th girl who sang for the first time. She's only 11, but she sings really well.

Then daughter said her car is making a noise. Something in the serpentine belt system. I pulled off the tensioner idler pulley and put a new 6203 2RS bearing, but it didn't help. Ended up ordering a new Bando belt from Amazon for $17.

My kids are exempt from taking midterms at school.

I have so much to do at work, I'm trying to prioritize what I will work on. Time to get things done now that the students are gone. But kind of sad they're gone because I like them.

We have a Torchmate 4 x 4 plasma table, that they let the trough water go bad during alligator season. Now it is rusted like an old battleship. We are about to coat it with POR black paint, after removing most of the rust, and treating it with POR acid solution.

Someday, I hope to cut out some cool designs with the waterjet and the plasma. Just to busy to play any right now.

I did find out that the chiller coolant that circulates in a Renishaw AM400 3D printer costs $500/5 gallons. Ouch. Green prestone would probably work just as good.

Kyle, the thing about those belts is to check the tracking. If it tracks slightly off center on the pulley there is a bent arm or stud for one of the pulleys that causes this. Don't ask why I know. Shredded belts can do a lot of damage

Good evening all. 25ºF for the start, clear sky, light breeze. Light wind, partly cloudy sky, and high temp was 52ºF. Chapel to start morning, then hot cereal for breakfast. Then it was time for fire in insert. Got fire started ok then draft stopped for some reason. Opened insert door and draft restart but got a lot of smoke in room. Had to open doors and windows to clear smoke out Fire took off and was fine rest of day. Did some kitchen cleanup and swept front porch and removed vent covers from kitchen heat/A-C vents so wife could wash them. Did get nap it. That was about it . Saw last of Dallas game

Frits when I was in Netherlands, pretty much all the natives asked me if they could practice the English with me. It would be nice is they hired people who could speak English for customer service.

Frits love the story with maid getting you live chickens. Work had a customer who was joint venture of Purolater and Nippondenso. We would get the no understand when it was something they did not want to handle.

PJ I have more than my share of disasters, tried to reset toilet and did not realise how much bailing wire used on previous install. Wife called plumber, took him 3hours to fix previous bad job.

Frits what happened to that 20,000 gal/min ?

Mostly, the plant was permitted based on Zero discharge. The water was used in the cooling towers to condense steam from the turbines. The blow down from the towers was sent to evaporation ponds.
Water was also coming from the 300 mile pipeline from Black Mesa AZ that carried coal slurry.
To minimize blow down 20000 gpm of makeup had to be softened in giant softeners using lime and soda ash.
Similarly the water from the coal slurry was treated in giant tanks and used for cooling tower makeup
California Edison was not capable of operating it and gave it back to the builder which turned out to be me. California Edison had screwed it up and had built evaporation ponds all over the desert
I hired staff to operate and proved that if operated as designed it worked

Night was near 0 C but now again going down, -5 C (23 F) but strong wind makes it feel much colder

Funny thing about Hoarfrost - I am teaching to you something .
Basically it is like dew but at winter - moisture from air is condensing, as it becomes colder, but vegetation / structures are freezing cold and a kind of snow powder is forming. It is not hard as ice. Ice would form from real droplets, hoarfrost is coming from fog. It has to be still, no wind, as if wind is blowing all that powder is gone.
Just dont get, this word is not used as that phenomena is rare at your places or that is a kind of oldschool word, only some kind of fancy poets speak like that ?



Forecast says tomorrow warm and wet air will arrive, and at beginning, as it is wet, clouds will be rather high. But gravity will to the job and that water will come down to frozen land / structures. As drizzle, rain. Actually freezing rain. Again - we have a word for that. I have googled, it seems that in English there is not a special term for "freezing rain".
Anyway, tomorrow will be harsh, I am planning to cancel trips for my technicians. Better be safe than sorry

Helo, I see hoarfrost in the mountain meadows a good bit in winter, and hear other hikers talking about it, so it is a term used when needed here. We get it in our fields only a few times per winter. Your photo was really pretty.

We went over to my MIL's yesterday and had Christmas early with my wife's brother, wife, and 2 year old son. Had a good time, and heard some good fishing stories and pix. He takes his truck with camper over to Cape Lookout National Seashore on the little 4 car ferry, and drives the beach to fish...red drum and black drum, sharks, skates and flounder being the most common caught. He sent us home with some flounder, shrimp, and soft shell crabs...guess what we had for dinner last night? We used to go over there every summer for a week to 10 days...could fish and surf all day and sometimes never see another soul on the beach but your family.

Got home and warmed up the tractor to bring a pallet of firewood up to the porch and unload before dark...then repositioned the empty pallet next to my splitter, for a refill. Trying to get ready for the storm predicted late this week...it's not sure if it wants to rain on us or snow.

thankfully feel better this morning, pain in jaw lessened. Antibiotics doing their job.

landscaper coming later this morning to give a quote on annual flower bed maintenance. My current landscaper retired, these are folks he recommended.
I like the name of their company, Best Buddies landscaping.

electric bill highest ever, 207 bucks which doesn't surprise me considering hot tub running, new additional freezer in basement, and three different space heaters run
intermittently depending upon if I'm in that room. But no matter what, has to be cheaper than turning up thermostat and burning fuel oil this winter.
I have a radiator heater next to me in office and I just put my feet over there and get them toasty.
sure wish it was a wood stove, nothing better than that heat.

Good morning, low temp 22 and going to a high of 27°F. Wind WNW 11 mph. 60% chance of flurries.

I prefer to acclimatize myself to the colder weather, that way when the 2 weeks of -40F temperatures come it doesn't feel all that cold.
In the ten years I have owned this tractor, I have never let it idle to 'warm up'. I have a winter front on it and after the hydraulics stop howling I put 'er to work at about 1500 rpm. After I see the temp gauge moving up a little off stone cold or the heater starts blowing warm air, then I bump the engine speed up to 18-1900 rpm and that is where it stays until I am ready to shut it down.
It seems like Kioti is pretty proud of their heater blowers, they want $610.oo + tax + shipping for a new one. I am not sure it is the motor, it may be the switch and I am not prepared to play the $600++ guessing game. The blower works on high and I can open the front window when it gets too hot, or I can shut it off.

Another energy conservation day.

Odd weather, or just odd forecasters? NWS this morning says our temperature is forecast to be a LOW of 47° and a HIGH of 47° and currently 48°. Of course with our weird weather I guess it might just stay the same all day. The NWS also says a 20% chance overnight and 30% chance today of some rain. Currently, radar shows that to all be south of us. So it appears that a fairly nice day is in store for us.

God has given us another chance to get it right (or at least not screw up too badly).

I have hit upon a technique with the chickens to get them in the coop at night: when I let them out, I then close the covered run gate and the gate connecting it to the coop, and only leave the coop door open.

I first tried it Saturday night, and all but one made it in - one of the new birds was roaming around in distress wondering where everyone else went. But she wouldn’t allow me to herd her into the coop, so I had to use my new fishing net, and she was not amused, but it did the job and I got her in with the rest of them.

did it again same way last night and all the birds went in without any guidance, which is a good thing! Especially since it is currently 17.6 F. I want time get them to opt for the coop instead of the run roost bars on their own, but they seem to have their preference for being outside at night. . .

yesterday was a kitchen day: I made a large quiche in a deep-dish pizza pan (14” dia.) and pickled 2 dozen more eggs. This batch has about a tablespoon of Colman’s Mustard added to the brine (in addition to everything else) so it should be pretty potent!

spent the afternoon crunch-potato-ing reading SF insteadnofnfoing other things on the list because reasons. . . It was just one of those days.

lit is not supposed to get out of the 30’s today, so it may be a good day to finally install the new toilet downstairs. It is anyone day for inside work, I figure.
