Don't you wish they would figure out some way to magnetize glass? Maybe mix some iron in? I sure hate triple vacuuming to keep the slivers out of feet and hands.

Amen to that

Back from the farm, only 2 detours for traffic, and a couple others for fun.

Where to begin.

Last night put antifreeze/water mix in tractor radiator. This morning tried it out. Got mowing over the hill, and noticed gear box is loose again on the mower, so came back in.

Removed mower and flipped it.
IMG_5087.JPG

Removed stump jumper and tightened bolts.
IMG_5088.JPG
Unfortunately no loc tite available.
Mowed ok afterwards. I mowed the steepest part of the hill to keep dad off of it.
IMG_5093.JPG

When I finished Radiator boiling and squirting out the overflow tube. Maybe too much in it?

Lawn mower acts like it’s seized, maybe something broke inside engine. Won’t turn. Not even with my jump starter. Did put my original battery back in it. Now dad has 2 non working riding mowers. I’ll have to cart it back home another trip, maybe find replacement engine, have it rebuilt, or just trash it. I rebuilt the transmission a couple yrs ago.

Never got to other chores.
At least cell cam working again, probably on batteries. Wish it told you what power source.

Good (Thursday) morning. Overnight low of 4.1C, mostly due to wind chill although it wasn't that windy. Fairly clear sky and the high is predicted to reach 12C.

I, of course, need to return to town for a delivery, although it can wait as it's a new case of wine. I've also got an evening meeting to attend so will be 'dining out'.

That's about it, take care all.

Got all the picket fence installed, cleaned up all the scraps and tools put away.
Max came outside, but wouldn't go near the new "open area". I went out and sat at the furthest part, calling him over. After a very hesitant approach, he started smelling all the new 'territory'.

It was kinda funny.... where I took down the existing fence, there was a 2-3" "step" of mulch, where it was compacted against the fence. He wouldn't just walk past it, he had to jump when going both directions.

I had also moved a really cool "root ball" that was dug up years ago, out to the corner of the walkway. (I can't remember what they are called, but woodturners make cool bowls out of them). Max did not appreciate that it was now in his line of sight..... he sheepishly stayed about 8' away from it, nose low trying to sniff it, growling at it, and a couple of warning barks. I haven't had this much entertainment from him since he was a pup.

Don't know what he'll do tomorrow for an encore!

I know what I'll be doing tomorrow.... mulch!
But before new mulch gets put down, I'm going to rake up the larger chunks / sticks of the "natural" mulch that was originally there. It was free stuff from the transfer station. It's all forest mulch, only single shred. When it's first put down, it's mixed good. Over the past 2 years, all the small chips / shreds pack down, but the sticks all stay on the surface. They are 6-8" long, 1/2 to 1" in diameter. Those hafta' go! Good base there, minimal if any weeds, so it will get a nice 'top coat' of the brown chip mulch.

That should wear out my energy for the day, but I'll get in some seat time.

67F and clear @ 23:00, heading down to a low of 62F in the overnight. The high hit 89.1F today, no rain.

Moved plants out of garage of garage first thing.

Then watered all potted plants out front.

Woman headed out to do the grocery shopping a little after noon.

With the Water Buffalo refilled and ready to go, today ended up being Watering Day.

Got the northeast planting bed watered: 5 rhododendrons, 5 azaleas, 1 lilac, almost all the hosta. The rhododendrons and azaleas got fed with MiracleGro as well.

Got the east planting bed watered: 2 rhododendrons, all the Stella D'Oro's, all the hostas, and all the Coral Bells. All were fed with the appropriate MiracleGro (acid/non-acid)

Refilled Water Buffalo twice, so probably more than 100 gallons between the two areas. Still most of the second refill available for use tomorrow, when I'll do the northwest planting bed.

Woman brought back one of those baked chickens along with the rest of the groceries, fixed chicken sandwiches for lunch after we unloaded the car.

Mowed part of the east side down here around the house during second WB refill, rear part done, will finish the rest of it tomorrow.

Watered all the summer squash, day lilies, and peonies in back.

Also watered about 1/2 of the garden until it started getting dark out and the water flow had slowed. Will finish the rest of it tomorrow.

Hopefully that should mostly tide things over until we get some rain (maybe Friday/Saturday), rain chances looking better next week, so hopefully not as much watering.

Put the Cub away this evening and then came inside and grabbed the shotgun and emptied the shells that were in it and reloaded with No. 9 shot. Figured I'd provide a little welcome for Rocky if he or his brother showed up.

Went back outside and he was right there at the back end of the van. Scurried off towards the culvert as soon as he saw me so I moved the plants into the garage before I walked over to take a look.

Unfortunately, he made perhaps what was a fatal mistake when he popped his head up out of the hole.

I was probably 20' away at that point, and given how far he seemed to jump when I fired, I think I got him pretty good. Didn't kill him instantly though, and he headed back down into the culvert. Scoped it out with my flashlight and it looked as though there may have been some blood but I wasn't going to climb down in the hole to find out. If I find bones at the outlet end in the future I'll know that I got him.

Hope everyone had ... a better day than Rocky did ... (y)

Correct about the lime, in fact adding lime here would really mess up the PH, we tend to have alkaline soil. For heating up the compost pile I have used cotton seed meal with good results.

Good to know ... (y)

Looking at the prices now it is not very economical and just keeping the pile at the right moister and turning it would probably be best. And time, at least a year.

Yup.

RS how long did your good looking dark compost take to decompose?

It probably varies somewhat, depending on what's in pile. I'd say a year or two maybe, although at one point I had a couple of large piles of wood chips only - from when they cleared the pad for the gas well - I left that set for 5 or more years, before I got around to digging into it. When I did it was beautiful ... almost like peat moss in a way.

So it's kind of hard to judge.

The stuff I harvest out of it still has a good bit of smaller wood chips in it - whatever can pass through 1" square welded-wire fencing.

But it's probably at least 75% decomposed.

The larger stuff that gets screened out gets returned back to current or new part of the pile - which at the moment is on the south end of the pile - for further digestion.

txdon said, "The Discount tire was extremely crowded took an hour wait just to find out they did not have the tires in stock. Too many people are moving to this fastest growing town in America."

Yep, nearly all of my tire purchases for many, many years have been from Discount Tire (since the first one I ever heard of in Dallas). And yes, the ones in Denton and Corinth seem to get busier (and slower) all the time.

62 headed up to 90 today in bright sun.
I'm headed over to church to mow.
Have a project starting there where I want to photograph each of our approx 3500 graves.
But first have to get lawn looking ok, just weedeated, now I mow, then I take pics. That's the plan
It's a big project, start of database project where we link the records to the pics. Thank goodness for my golf cart, will just drive the whole
graveyard very slowly.

only going to do four hours to try to take it easier on neck. Then back again tomorrow to finish.

I have a mandatory family appearance tonight at local library, the one I was president of 20+ years ago. My uncle, the retired Naval captain, left
some endowment money for this little home town library, and turns out the money has really helped them. They only get to spend the earnings, but it grew over a number of years
and they just redid the library with my late Uncle's help. After the Navy he substitute taught AP kids in Arlington VA public schools up until he was 83. Then pancreas cancer took him down quickly. So my brother and his son both squirmed out of this patron's event, sticking me with this one. I'm going to need a shower, nap and rest before going to that tonight after all this mowing.

The funny part about my uncle's gift to this library was he specified it was for classical British and American literature.
Hmmm, less and less of that every year; today the library wants streaming services, the NY Times and WSJ so they don't have to buy it at home.
So we have had to talk each year about what literature would be acceptable under my uncle's original wishes. It gets more difficult each year.
Library sends us a two page list of books they bought from this donated money, and it makes fascinating reading. Just fun to see what is "current".

speaking of classical Brits, Eric hope you are ok. We all miss your reports from that side of the pond. You too Helogabals.

70 to 90 hot. Had a little ground fog this morning...as it slowly crept up the hill, one patch carried some eau de skunk...then it went away, but later when I walked further out from the house to the farthest feeders, I picked it up again.

Nice trip, BEF...sorry equipment misbehaving.

If anybody is corresponding with Ron or Eric since they quit TBN, are they okay?

Changed the oil in my wife's vehicle yesterday...went pretty well, but always something proves a challenge...yesterday it was carrying the old oil over to the storage container...slopped some on my clothes...the new spots will just match the old grease spots from the tractor. 😁

Hope all have a great last day of June.

See how many are in findagrave and enter there also.

Are you sure? Our town started using "Purple Pipe Reclaimed Water" in 1979 at the University's golf course. Then in 1999 the city was issued one of the first reuse authorization by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to use reclaimed water for our neighborhood's golf courses. It has expanded to other golf courses and the city park. California also uses "Purple Pipe Reclaimed Water". It is a way to get low cost irrigation water that does not have to be up to drinking water treatment standards. Does anyone else out there know if the "Purple Pipe Reclaimed Water" is used in their areas?

Got new tires yesterday but the alignment was good and did not need adjustment so I still don't know what caused the premature wearing on the inside tread on the driver's side front tire. Any ideas? Tires had 26,000 miles were rotated 2 or 3 times.

72˚ heading to the mid 90s. Sun is on full throttle.
