I remember when they used to call Baltimore "Charm City"...pretty sure it's "Sh*tty City" now
I worked on a pipe organ a couple of times in the Overlea area back in '09, I think. Really neat old stone church. The places I had to crawl and walk though in that old church were absolutely filthy, though. It was clealy an old industrial town. Other than just being dirty, though, I didn't find my times there awful. They people I met were all friendly and helpful. I do know Baltimore has a reputation for having a crime problem there, but being from the St. Louis area and working in this city every day, there's not a lot that could shock me anywhere else.

half an hour late pulling out of DC, expect to see snow soon
vegan lunch ok, I'm having the short ribs tonight. And a salad.
look at all this DC traffic, going over the Potomac River now heading into
Alexandria. Pentagon off to my right, one high rise condo after another. And since there are cranes everywhere, they are still building them.

We don't get to see much graffitti and tagging out in the country. All this urban "art", some of it
very elaborate. Think I'm going past Crystal City, now the area along the train is landscaped and mulched here....definitely the high rent district for all those well paid government workers.

the amount of new construction south of DC is remarkable looks like whole new cities going up along the Potomac. Reminds me too much of China. Not much soul to it, sort of industrial looking

Used to enjoy going to "The Block" (that was where all the strip joints were) and had some relatives still living in the city. I lived in the "suburbs" which was fairly rural.
There was crime there then too, but not like the shoot-em ups now

had a brief chat with cabin attendant, nice lady, looked frazzled, she mentioned she lived in Miami and got very sleep the night before because this train was 6 hours late coming North to NYC.
As my eyes got wide I had to ask: Why?

Cows
Cows?
cows on the track. Must have been a lot of cows.

I used Amtrak a few times the last couple of years to travel down to NYC,
was going down for my brother who was in Sloan Kettering and then a recovery house.
I actually enjoyed the ride and as you have said the staff were excellent.
I used the dining car when it was available nothing fancy but it wasn't bad.
The graffiti was amazing in places and the scenery varied from atrocious to amazing.

put my order in for the vegan lunch and that will come in a while.
I'm curious, did the "vegan" lunch have cheese?

We just went above freezing at 33˚F after being below freezing for the last 12 hours.
We had a little bit of sleet an hour ago.
