54F and cloudy @ 13:30, headed up to a high of 56F for the day. Had some light rain earlier.
Looks like an extended period of dry weather after tomorrow ... but with much cooler temps in the second half of the Ten Day (highs only in the 40's, lows in the 30's)
Lots of activity out at the feeders this morning.
Spent a whole bunch of time dicking around with the aftermath of the dog bite yesterday, trying to clarify what did or did not happen, and what the appropriate medical treatment ought to be - in light of the dog being unvaccinated - a fact which wasn't known at the time She was treated at the emergency room.
It was being said that the hospital was required to report all dog bites to the county health department. But I called the Emergency Room and the secretary I spoke to said she didn't see any paperwork on that or any record that it had been done so she asked The Woman remembered filling that out. Nope ... so secretary said hold on, attending that treated her is here and I'll go check. When she came back to the phone her report was kinda nebulous and not definitive ... so it looks like that probably didn't happen.
The secretary - who had a rather odd vocal habit (every sentence or phrase that she uttered was punctuated at the end with "Mmmm") - got side-tracked during that into checking to see if WE could report it.
Made it clear to her that 1. if it didn't occur, they needed to being looking at their policies/procedures/checklists - to make sure that this doesn't happen in the future, and 2. I wanted a call back from her to let us know one way or another as regards the reporting.
Haven't heard a word from them since.
Called local health department here (different county) for clarity on what the typical recommendation would be as far as prophylactic treatment for rabies would be, in light of dog being unvaccinated. Got transferred to the Environmental Health section and the call went to voicemail and I left a message. Gave that about an hour and called again back to the main number and talked to someone there after I explained the situation. Was basically told that they only vaccinate students (common for students that work with animals I guess) and that they couldn't recommend any particular medical treatment. Not a particularly satisfying conversation.
Within an hour of that I did get a call from a nice lady in the Environmental Health section where I had left the voicemail that seemed to know what she was talking about. Bottomline was if dog shows any signs of being sick within the 10 day quarantine, then possibly treatment.
We do know from talking to the Detective that he contacted the dog owner and told them that 1. the dog needed to be quarantined for 10 days, 2. any signs of sickness should be reported, and 3. that the dog should not be vaccinated during that time period.
Can't say I'm all that happy about that ... since it relies on the pet owner to ensure that all of that happens. Unclear if anyone will be following up with them.
Next up will be to call either that county's health department and see if it was reported to them and see if we can expect them to follow up.
The wound appears to be healing well, although her calf is pretty bruised up.
Beyond that little bit of fun and amusement, we did manage to get 30 some irises planted yesterday:
Still have two or three here left to go, plus another four that have not shipped yet to complete the planting. The ones that were planted in pots that I had ordered all showed good root growth - which is encouraging, since they all came in as dry bare roots and I didn't get them potted right away.
Most likely be a largely inside day, given the rain. Will probably need to refill feeders though.
Yesterday's colors:
Hope everyone has an enjoyable, productive, and safe Friday ...
