Good morning, the temperature is 30°F and going to 34. Wind ESE 14 mph. 70% chance of flurries. Snow tonight and tomorrow.

I didn't get to the driveway yesterday, got back too late from shopping, I'm going out in an hour to do it. It is light enough out right now to start, but I want to let the others in the house have some peace and quiet until 9. It is a rare occasion for them to be up before 9.

Re new trucks; up here they are expen$ive. I am a firm believer in paying no more than $300.oo/month payments for any vehicle. I am not rich enough to pay cash for a new vehicle.

That baby tree rat only needs a baby bullet, a .177 pellet would do it.:D

There is still no sign of my new winter coat, so I am going to write that one off. It is a good thing it was on a company supplied clothing voucher and not cash out of my pocket.

Have a safe day all

Good Morning
It’s 28 headed,to almost 50 with rain coming round lunchtime.

I actually did some cleaning up in the shop yesterday, my youngest son is a mechanical engineer and wants to put a 3D printer there, so I’m finding him a good spot. He is quite good with Solidworks and can create parts amazingly quickly. He designed a part for his brothers boat, I emailed the file to a friend with a CNC shop and picked up the finished anodized part later in the week.

I don’t drink coffee but those grinders look great, and are my idea of how to decorate.

The prices of new trucks are breathtaking, I would have a hard time spending that much on something that will be worth less everyday until it’s literally junk. But for a tool or tractor I would do it in a heartbeat. I never saw a tool that I didn’t need. Go figure.....

Ron I’m glad that you are back to having a functional thermostat and the connected furnace. Central heat and indoor plumbing are easy to take for granted..

Good Morning!!!! 49F @ 4:00AM. Clouds and some sun this morning with more clouds for this afternoon. High near 65F. Winds light and variable.
Rain showers move in next Friday, lasting through the weekend, but accumulation is predicted to be less than a quarter inch.:(
This weekend temps will be in the low 70s. Looks like Old Man Winter is on vacation so far this year.

"Government Funded Stimulus" is in reality taxpayer funded, so in reality all the government is doing is giving us each a small loan we'll pay back next year after they raise the income tax rates. BTW, both were promises made during last fall's election campaign.

Glad the porch project is reaching pretty near the end, Mike. I bet that's a good feeling!

That's a fat little squirrel, Ron. I used to get six hundred dollar electric bills before the solar power system went in. Glad those days are over. In a way, that Covid map is deceiving. It goes by the percentage of the population that has been vaccinated, and states with large populations need more vaccine, which is in short supply. So those states will naturally fall to the bottom of that list. Still, though, there's not much progress being made when only a thousand injections are being given a day.

I got used to driving the F250 around town when it was my only vehicle, Drew, but I also did more walking. I always try to get a pull through parking place to avoid trying to back the thing up; too much chance of bumping into something, even when using the rear view camera. Those kind of spaces get rarer as you get closer to the door of the store. Try one of these on your next wayward French fry.

I have a lot to learn about indexable cutters, Kyle. I thought I ordered a boring bar that would use the inserts I already have, but the ones it uses are much smaller. I did order extra inserts for the other bar I ordered, but I still need to figure out what to order for the other new one. And run the gauntlet of "while I'm ordering, I might as well see what else I need."

Out here, Chris, those alerts are triggered by atmospheric inversions that trap smoke near the ground instead of letting it rise into the sky. They got really bad last summer during the forest fires.

There's one mineral, and I think it selenium, that is harmful to older folks, Paul, and they leave it out of the "silver" line of multi-vitamins.

Sorry to hear about the wind damage, Ted. Hopefully you're getting closer to your knee surgery?

The glass screen protector on the new iPhone keeps coming unstuck in one corner. It's not much of a problem now, but when dirt gets under there, the rear facing camera won't work very well. OtterBox has been great to deal with in the past, so they're on my call list for today.

I've been trying to chase down the salesman at the Reno forklift dealer to see when they'll have more of the pallet jacks I'd like to purchase, but the fella just doesn't return my calls. Apparently he's the owner's kid, and you know how that goes.:irked:

I did get some parts ordered for the new shotgun, or I should say backordered. Apparently they're in high demand.

Felt the need to get away from the desk for a while, so fired up the splitter and loaded another pallet full of wood. Instead of throwing the scraps on the ground, they went into the bed of the side-by-side, and when the splitter ran out of gas, it was nice to just drive over to the campfire ring and have plenty of wood to build the fire.

That FedEx from my insurance company came a day early, and for once it had a little good news in it. They've agreed to renew the homeowner's policy for another year, but warned that would be the last time. The letter came from their Chief Council, making it clear that they were trying to weasel out of the California Insurance Commissioner's stay on non-renewals. Maybe they figgered California had more lawyers than they did?

Fooled around a little bit with the cameras on the new phone, and I'm likin' what I see. The color is closer to reality, not as orange as the old phone, and the 5x zoom is better, too. Framing the photo is a lot easier on the bigger screen, as is viewing the photos. Apparently Apple has come up with a new file format for the images, and it was selected by default. TBN didn't like the format, and I had to use the Preview application on the laptop to convert them to .jpg. The night time shots are nothing to write home about, but they're much better than the old phone. Still gonna have to pony up for a dedicated camera before I can post anything close to what Ron can do, though.

When it comes to cordless tools, look carefully at the variety of tools offered for the battery platform, it’s a safe bet that the companies with a broad range of tools will support that battery for a longtime, and not orphan you and your tools.
I settled on Makita 18v tools and the Milwaukee 12v platform. So far I’m happy with my choice. I’ve had the Makita for close to a decade, the Milwaukee for a couple of years. I’m sure that I have a combined total of over 20 tools from grease gun to chainsaw and a lot in between.

Good morning! 35 now, waiting for it to start raining. Looks like the temperature should remain pretty static all day.

Got one batch of reports completed for work. Now time to start on the other product line.

Wife and I had our first 電ate night since before I got sick in mid-November. We have for years made it a point to have a Thursday date night. We enjoyed it!

Nice pics of coffee grinders, squirrels, sunrise, etc.!

Everyone stay safe out there

I am loving the big double charger that came with my Makita chain saw. And now I have lots of 5AH batteries .
I found the generic Makita battery packs to work ok, 1/3 the cost, but took some repeat charge cycles to get them completely full.
So happy to have four more of the oem ones. I get about ten years out of the battery packs. No complaint about that.
Paul you went with Milwaukee for your smaller driver and I went with Bosch. Likely both are similar. The smaller ones fit nicely in ones hand and
I've found are surprisingly powerful.

RNG, Iphone 12? Pro?
I really want a better camera on mine, don't need any of the other bells and whistles.
David and others who have the newer cell phones, are you satisfied with the camera quality?
Mine is getting pretty old. Might see what Verizon has to offer.

That's a really good point, Paul. Makita also seems to be dedicated to the current 18V format, as they've both increased the capacity of the battery and come up with beefier tools that use two of them. The X2 line includes our chainsaws, and blowers and lawnmowers, too. There's even a line of battery powered wheel barrows! I've also found that parts are easily available, and they're reasonably priced as well. I've had Chinese knock off batteries for a couple years now, and so far they're holding up well. At half the price and with more capacity than the originals, that's a pretty good deal, too.

12 Pro Max, Drew. My eyes are getting so bad I needed the extra screen real estate in order to read the text. I sure miss being able to walk around with my phone in my front jeans pocket, though. Gonna have to start wearing the belt mount carrier. I upgraded my original SE through Verizon. Pricing everywhere I looked was the same, and it only took a couple days to get here. I used iTunes to migrate data from the old phone to the new one, but both Apple and Verizon offer a cloud based migration tool if you have a fast internet connection with lots of data.:2cents:

26 this morning, 57 later and rain tonight.

Maryland is moving to 1b this Monday and 1c the following Monday and will all be administered concurrently. Not sure how that will work since they can’t keep up now. The National guard is sending teams to my county and others to assist in giving vaccine.

I’ve got three chargers also, Dewalt, Black and Decker and HF. The Dewalts are by far better quality but I have to say my single favorite power tool is my B&D drill/3/8 impact combo. With the impact I’m amazed at how much torque such a small tool can generate. My late wife gave it to me for Christmas a few years back, great tool.

Grocery pick up later, I need to service the filters on the HVAC/humidifier today, trying to help Ellen with the laundry as she is busy today, sometimes I think she’d rather I didn’t.
Tuesday would have been my late wife’s 69th birthday, I still get up and go to bed in the same place but my life has sure changed.

Have a good day folks.

A caution on the generic Makita batteries. I’ve got a friend that just had one catch fire on the charger. Fortunately he caught it, and was able to drag it outside by the charger line cord, but apparently it was a pretty spectacular fire, spewing flaming molten material.
He disposed of the others that he had, and is going back to al OEM batteries.

I have an older SE also through Verizon. Did you notice an appreciable difference in photo quality?
I know you get a telephoto and a wide angle lens, is it easy to choose? Arthritis in my hands makes using these
phones very difficult.

And speaking of poor eyesight, did you know that the newer versions of iOS offer a Magnifier app? Works just like the camera app, except you can also tint the image and add more contrast. The instruction sheet that came with the OtterBox screen protector was literally postage stamp size, and I don't think even a teenager would be able to read it. Magnifier made it easy to see, providing a better image than even my old timey 4" Sherlock Holmes magnifying glass.

But mine came from the Happy Blessed Fortune battery company.
How could they be bad?....
Flaming molten material, yeah baby, I'd like two please.
Bet it smelled bad too.
sounds like an internal short circuit

Thanks, I'll pay extra care to mine from now on.

I discovered an app for the iPhone camera “Camera +” that lets you adjust focus, select shutter speed, aperture, and EV as well as macro functions. It really extends the use ability of the camera.

Here's a link where you can compare any three of Apple's iPhones.

The original SE and the new 12 Pros both have 12 Mp cameras, but the 12 Pros have a much richer set of image enhancement features, as well as separate wide, ultra wide, and telephoto lenses. You get a button for each of the three lenses, and they're easy to find and tap. The big screen on the Pro Max makes it much easier to use the buttons and read the labels on those features. My fingers are starting to get a little jerky, too, and that makes a big difference for me in usability.

moonSky.jpg moonTele.jpg
Image quality wise, I haven't shot enough with the new phone yet to tell. I was a little bit disappointed that the new cameras didn't have more resolution. But the image sensor has larger pixels so it can gather more light at night. I was able to take the shots above and get the lens to properly focus, which was something the old SE would never do at night. That might be due to the LIDAR assisted focusing on the Pro models. Neither image is good as I just couldn't manage to hold the phone still long enough for a sharp picture. But both the ultra wide and telephoto lens must be using that image sensor with the bigger pixels because they're both sucking in a lot more light!

campfireLegs.jpg
I can also tell that these new cameras have a much wider dynamic range than the old one in the SE. This shot was taken well after the sun was down, and not only are details visible in the bright flames, but in the sand and dark hills as well. And what you're seeing is the .jpg version, which has lower resolution and detail than the new HEIC format you can see on the phone's screen. Not that that matters much because I don't know of any image sharing site that can use that new Apple format...

How old were the batteries, Paul? I ask because the older batteries used a different lithium chemistry than those made in the last few years. That chemistry was prone to forming dendrites that would short out and cause a massive internal discharge like the one your friend got. The new chemistry also allows a higher charge density, so you get more charge in the same size and weight package, too. That said, I try not to leave the charger plugged in when I'm not around to watch it. Trust, but verify...

Good morning all, 36 going up to 50 , still not sure why WU shows low as being higher than current on some days- clouds have rolled in

Mostly - in NJ people pass on the right since police sit on the center median :confused3:

Roll out moving along, getting worn out and still need to start documentation and second phase

Not much done besides walking dog outside.

Welcome new people to GM - good to see some new faces and pictures.

Sodamo - all complete with shipping container build-havn't seen pictures in a while
Ron - good to hear Aunt recovering- glad it got caught early. Little squirrel has winter beer gut.
Phil - congrats on the wife easing into retirement
Wng - Mule? Guess would be good for rocky slopes :)

I always like the way government people say things are free, means free for them, $ from us!

I have only 2 chargers , Makita and Milwaukee M12- The M12 batteries have lasted me 5 or 6 years. The Makita is old 9v and I have knockoff batteries to keep them running as backup. Junk batteries charged on Tile or cement floors only!

Stay safe and be well
