I used gas for 35 years, but I found that the only benefit was a nicer bead, the flux core actually penetrates better.
I think I made an inch long bead with FC when I first got my MIG welder, just to see what it was like. Didn't see the utility in investing in all that expensive welding equipment only to have to chip slag off of every weld. And never had a problem with penetration, just keep the wire focused on the leading edge of the puddle. Have never used FC again after that, though if forced to weld outside in a wind, that would be a better fall back than erecting barriers or waiting until the wind died. Much easier to just pull the garage doors shut.:2cents:
