Good morning to all! Low of 65, going for 97 today. No rain .... not even a chance..

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRUCE!

I did not do anything in the hobby shack yesterday, did a little work on the tractor. Made a step support from come 1/4" flat bar stock. Then made / welded an extension for the parking brake lever. The factory lever is way down at the brake pedal, and I always struggled to reach down with the steering wheel in the way, plus the aftermarket seat sits about 4" higher. I basically made a lever that is up at the dash to be able to push down the original lever. The paint is drying, so will post pics later.

Also had to do a quick stop at the grocery store and the PO to pick up a package sent to us.

Maybe today I will get a chance to work on the hobby stuff....

It has just been way too hot... makes me a whole lot slower and less incentive to even do anything.

Everyone have a great day!

Finally yellow lily has bloomed.

Beautiful ...

RS, hadn't heard about the calcium issue...will have to check it out.

Here ya go:

Feeding mealworms to bluebirds

Best wishes for Coco.

Drew - hope you feel better soon and no more bumps in the road on sale ...

Roy - glad to hear you are feeling better.

Rick - like the fajitas as well ...

David - great news on Sophie's progress ... Happy Birthday to Kalani !

RS sounds like full day, cat food and water in live trap works every time for coons

Happy Birthday MG.

Yeah ... I imagine it would.

We've had good luck with peanut butter on a saltine cracker.

But before I can do anything I need to run down to TSC and pick up another large trap to replace the old one which has gotten pretty mangled up.

RS i'll bet inspector 7 wants to stay on the job to see what eats there :)

No doubt ...

BEF - that shade do make a difference. Hope you (and others that need it) get some rain.

It seems like this virus thing is un-hinging people. More wacky behavior than normal.

No doubt about it ... some of it is pretty unbelievable ...

RNG, what size hose do you have on your firetruck and how many feet? What is the flow rate of you our nozzles? I's always good to know how many minutes before you run out of water.

Will you be able to fill up at a FD connection, is it close?

Last question first, Don, I'm parked right next to the 2400 gallon water tank. But I don't have a suction hose I can draft with, yet. I need some help determining what size thread wise, to buy. If I take a photo or two of the suction hose inlet fitting with a rule in it, can you guys tell me what size to get?

There are a pair of hose reels, one on each side, and I think each one is a 1 1/2 or 2" line. I was told they put out 30 GPM.

There's a roll of hose in the back, and I haven't looked at that one closely to see the size.

More homework.

In the photo I put up earlier, we rigged a garden hose to feed the tank on the truck, and it kept up pretty well with how we were using the water. That wouldn't be the case in a real fire, though. Through a 1" hose, I think the well pump will put out about 5 GPM, but again, I haven't checked it lately.

Ted was joking the other day about what the next project should be, and from a safety standpoint, it should be to create more water storage. More homework...

If it's a 750 gpm pump, suction inlet should be 4.5". You may or may not also have a 2.5" suction below the main inlet.

Good morning - 73 going to 84.
Went and drilled the mounting holes for the bar dry sink yesterday- Came in soaked from the humidity- must have been around 15 minutes total
Followed by some rain.

Drew - feel better and paperwork at the last minute happens. hopefully this is the last of it. I had to project manage my bank to make closing date when I bought my house- every change was a week delay-so I got up in their faces and moved things along !

Mostly - Happy birthday!

RNG - Firetruck - big toy! and I can see it's usefulness in your area, can be some fun too, watering the garden at a hundred feet :)

David- Sophie is making good progress - Great to hear!

Saw my neighbors newborn girl yesterday (at about 20' just in case) :cool2:

Stay Safe and be well

RNG, the small hose reel is usually a one inch line, aka booster line, that would be your 30gpm, maybe a little more if cranked up. Often used for car fires, vegetation fires,
and places where only a little water is needed. 1.5 inch line puts out
considerably more, 150gpm or so. 2.5 inch line usually needs to be handled by two people, it's for big fires.
Of course all output is based on pump rpm. Pump/hose fittings I'll leave up to others

Dad sent this postcard of Cloverly Harbour England to his future wife (mom) dated 30 sept 1944.
He would have been fighting in France or Belgium by that date.

69°F and .41 inches rain

Got state taxes done and filed yesterday. State must be getting desperate, as they were processed within just a few hours after submission. Will be interesting to see when the money leaves the bank account.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

RNG, I do not have a Fire truck to compare a measurement pic but Rick does.

Are you planning on using the suction to draft an open water supply, pond or pool?

91° at lunch time.
Ron’s Lilly picture reminded me to take a picture of some of my wife’s flowers. She grows beautiful flowers.

Mostly, happy birthday.

I’ve noticed reckless driving is on the increase as well as crime. I’m for more and better funded police.

Are you planning on using the suction to draft an open water supply, pond or pool?

Even though I live above Lake Oroville, it's way to far away to draft from, and the water level would be at least 100' below the pump. Not to mention the fine if I got caught.

F750ControlPanel.jpg

Looking a little closer at the smaller of the two suction lines (the one marked with a "2" near the bottom of the panel, the one without the valve handle on it), the locking collar is marked 2 1/2, and the documentation references 2 1/2" discharge and suction valves. Just not sure at this point if that smaller line is for drafting or discharge.

:welcome: Tom! I also tried moving the various valves around this morning, and some are very stiff. I wonder about using petroleum based lubricants on them, though. Do valves of this type use o-rings, which might be damaged by such lubricants, or are they more likely to have old fashioned string packing in there? Wait one, the maintenance instructions do mention o-rings, and suggest Dow-Coring "Valve-Seal" as a lubricant. I'm thinkin' I'll try a little aerosol silicon lube first, being as how that would be easy.

Thanks for the guidance, folks!

More Homework!

I’m for more and better funded police.
 and better trained in some areas too

I got an upset call from my older brother yesterday who used to be head of the local township supervisors in Solebury PA. He was also in charge of
police force for awhile, though they have a chief of course. He was besides himself because an ex supervisor was circulating a petition to defund their
police force. Huh? This is a very wealthy community, very low crime, no record whatsoever of any racial issues/profiling anything whatsoever but yet this
crazy lady decides she was just going to stir the pot. Yes, I think the coronovirus situation is starting to make some folks really irrational. Too much time on their hands
and not enough common sense. Now if she had come out and said we need more mental health counselors, we need more drug education, etc she would make some sense. Not like this small police force was buying SWAT Humvees or crazy equipment.

RNG, small lines are easier to drag longer distances, and for vegetation fires, smaller line with some pressure behind it is likely a good choice for you. If you ever needed larger lines, it would be to hose down your buildings where you needed some elevation but in most cases if you needed a larger line, not likely very safe for you to be anywhere near there. You should invest in some fire resistant clothing also. Do you have a hiding place where you could let a fire go over you and burn out?

Wow, this one really hits home, Drew. The Chico city council met last week to discuss the "defund the police" topic, and several members had expressed interest in pursuing that path. The council got so much negative feedback from the citizens that the topic was voted down, 5 to 2. But then this week, a measure to ban the needle distribution activity was defeated by the same margin, 2 to 5. There are now two citizen groups actively campaigning to replace those five council members in November. I wish I could add my vote to the effort, but I live out in the county.

A couple months ago I picked up a pair of Nomex pants and a shirt, but they are dark blue uniforms, and probably not the best for actually fighting a wildfire. I've got my eye out for the bright yellow shirt/olive green pant outfit worn by the wildland guys, but what I have now is better than nothing. I should also line up some kind of helmet with a face shield, too, but again knowing next to nothing about them, don't feel real good about making a choice at this point.

As far as hiding places go, the house is probably my best bet. During the Saddle fire, the two firemen that spent the night sitting outside with me were planning to retire around the side of the house opposite the fire and let it pass by, then emerge to put out anything that caught. So that's probably what I would do, too.

That, or stand by the firetruck with a hose and just put out anything that came my way. That might not work so well in a wind driven fire, though, and with the steep slopes here, that's very likely to be the case.

Don't forget that the whole house sprinkler system is up and running, too, and it should protect the roof and walls of the building. But there's always the ember threat, and that's what the hoses are for.

Drew, you are absolutely correct in some folks having too much time on their hands. And definitely not enough common sense! I bet if they defunded the police there, then crime goes up, she will be the first one to complain about it!

I finished doing the tractor projects (parking brake extension and step reinforcement), so, now I get to play with making some wing racks for the RC's.
Here are some pics of the tractor stuff

Solebury is right next door to me.
In the late 70's and early 80's I spent a lot of time as a kid in NYC when the police there were way underfunded.
I remember the high crime rate, drive by shootings and whole sections of the city boarded up and sometimes just burning. The south bronx and Brooklyn had many areas where you could get shot during the day as one of the many gang disputes went full out, my father worked in east NY and had to get some bullet holes filled in on his car. This happened by a high school while classes were in session.
I don't want to ever see that again. At the time you could not wear jewelry, watches etc. on the subway. Getting mugged was a real possibility any time of the day/night.

Not to be political but I suspect if the call was to reform not defund the police there would be greater support. To me, the police have drifted way far from their purpose. Remember the days as a kid we were taught a policeman was your friend?
