Pearl Harbor day.

38° and mostly cloudy
Going to a party at the neighbors this afternoon.
Wife and son got rid of my temporary bed in FR. was nice sleeping in warm room with the pellet stove. Now I’m back sleeping upstairs. Something about a tree going there instead.
Satellite tv not working again. I really need to move the dish and tighten it up so the wind doesn’t move it. Just had to move dish a hair for it to come in.

65°F and .63 inches rain. A drier day ahead, perhaps

Big day of remembrance over here. Think news said only 3 living survivors remaining, only 1 made the trip over this year.

Sun peaking out, yeaaaa.

Always a bit somber to read the trials and tribulations, the losses we share here.
Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

Good morning! High today 60s, high tomorrow 70s, Monday 80s and not Fall again till Tuesday.

My Ranger has smart oil change. It tells the % of oil life left and goes by several factors. Right now it says I have 83% oil life remaining before it needs replacing.

My 2017 Ford Escape is supposed to have an oil change between 5 and 10 thousand miles and has a warning light (according to the manual) when you have 5% left on your oil life. I just never have waited on that light to come on. Ford calls it an "Intelligent Oil Life Monitor".

My 13 pilot has % oil life.
I change dyno at 5k, synthetic at 10k.

Good price. They also have the Stanley 1000 for $65.

I just ordered this one, since my son lost his somehow.

the smaller one fits in a compact SUV truck a bit better, larger one more important for diesels, bigger machines.

and wouldn't you know the Kubota side by side wouldn't start this morning and I jumped it with the same unit I have had for several years.
Helper was impressed, thought he should get one, his small truck has a weak battery. Little did he know he went home with one this afternoon.
I think he gave me a bottle of aftershave, all wrapped up nicely. Too bad I don't use any of it...but it was a nice guy gift.

Decided to take it easy this afternoon, heater keeping my legs toasty.

BMW introduced that nonsense back in the 2000s, as I've mentioned, when they started including oil changes in their free maintenance plans. They even went so far as to proclaim some components, like differentials and automatic transmissions, "lubed for life". They were, for the life of the warranty. By the time 36,000 miles rolled around, there was so much sludge accumulated in the automatic transmissions you ran a real risk of stirring it up and blocking passages if you did try to change it. And if you decided to do it anyway, the officla juice was over thirteen dollars a quart, and since the torque converter didn't have a drain plug, you had to change the 7.5 quarts the thing held twice to get anything close to a full oil swap. Not long after that, they did away with dip sticks so that you could actually check the engine oil level, and then came run flat tires. All perfect "advances" in technology, as long as you get rid of the things before the warranty expired.

Yes, the base stock of modern oils, and the new additives, really do keep the oil from breaking down in viscosity. But they do nothing to keep particulate contamination at bay, or to neutralize the acid that forms in the oil over time. So when you decide to go with the factory recommended oil change of 10,000, 15,000, or 20,000 miles, don't be surprised if you find the engine in need of repairs before it gets much over 50,000 or 60,000 miles. That's why when you get ready to sell your $65,000 Ultimate Driving Machine with 55,000 miles on it, you'll bet maybe $35,000 for it, and probably much less. That's because the poor devil that buys it'll be dumping big money into the thing just to keep it running...

It was a mostly cloudy 9ºF for today's low temperature. Mixed sun/clouds with off and on light snow flurries most of the day. Today's high is the present 28ºF. Yeterday's 2"of snow made for slick roads today. It was 4WD to the dump and 4WD on my return home. It would still be prudent to drive in 4WD or drive an AWD vehicle today. Brogen got his morning dump run treats and is now at the doggie gulag. He really loves that place and he gets great care even in "solitary." Wifey's/our pharmacy run today is a bust. Out of 4 prescriptions called in last week all the pharmacy had was my insulin syringes despite the computerized recording calls informing us that our prescriptions were ready for pick up...... Our pharmacy has always provided great service. I suspect that most of the breakdown occurred with our health care center which was closed due to the snow earlier this week. No matter we are on trip mode: pack tomorrow; eat great barbecue for dinner tomorrow ; and spend the night at a hotel at the airport for a 7:00AM flight Monday.

Thanks for the + trip wishes.

If we forget about Pearl Harbor or 9/11 history will repeat itself.

I hope that everyone is having a decent Saturday.

I have a jump starter/ compressor I got at Costco years ago. I use it a good bit, usually on lawnmower or my small Massey tractor. I like that it has a clamp on to the valve stem and not a screw on.

It's no mystery that when Japan started WWII in the Pacific that tragic day, the US would have to end it with the equally tragic destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It's the only thing the Japanese at the time would respond to: Horrific violence. People forget that. It's still the same today, but we're doing a little better job of keeping the swords sheathed.Hoever, the constant stream of terrorist events, third world bush fights, and even our wildfires and hurricanes, should remind us that the veneer of civilization is very thin.

That reminds me of the best definition of Christmas that I ever heard:

It's the time when you buy something that you would love to have to give to someone who has absolutely no use for it.

Eric for me to be Frank I'd have to change my name. :)
One of the things that I noted about American cars was that although Jaguar had won Le Mans using disk brakes way back in the early 50s and disk brakes were used on English, European and Japanese production cars it took a few years to become mainstream in America. It was the same with Quartz halogen as against sealed beams.
Drip trays were for use under English cars.
I investigated the use of toilet paper oil filters for our large fleet of commercial vehicles way back in the eighties. Yes it would work if it was installed as a bypass filter but in the long term the oil additives would lose their efficiency and damage to the engine would occur. Engines would burn oil (more so in those days) but the added pint or so top up would not add enough of the additives to protect the engine.

American car builders wanted to go to quartz halogen years earlier, but antiquated federal law said no. As for oil change intervals, every car built in the last 30 years can go 10000 between changes. Yes oils are far better, but so are engine tolerances and materials.
Bear in mind that for many years Rolls, Bentley, BMW, Jaguar and many other high end European cars had GM transmissions. That includes some Bimmers well into the 2000s.

Had a busy day, blood draw at 7:45 am in prep for my TAVR, breakfast, some in law business and visit, lunch, then home to decorate the great outdoors, pick up groceries, get dinner, put everything away and stop for the day about 7:30. Now probably a nap before bed.
Temps were a little cool, around 44 and breezy. 26 now, may get really cold tonight.

Good evening and prayers for you all.
