I need to contact Dish to replace a receiver. It released some smoke yesterday.

Anything with electronics in it around here seems to have trouble surviving the seasonal temperature and humidity swings in the spring and fall. But I think this latest DVR failure is caused by damage accumulated in the six recent electrical failures. HDs don't like instant power failures.

Scrambler, more power to 'ya! Persistence pays off... I had a similar situation just yesterday with Costco's website. I am searching for the 'right' generator for my needs. I was in the store and they have a Firman 8500 watt dual fuel gen in stock at $699. It's just a bit bigger than what I need (been looking at the 5-6K wattage) and a bit higher priced (I'm hoping to be around $500). The website doesn't even show this generator, only much smaller ones. The Firman website shows the larger gen as 'specifically available at Costco'.
A Google search for the specific generator that I'm looking for shows that Costco sells it, just "not available in your area". I gave up really easy....Home Depot sells it at a great price. I haven't purchased one yet, but soon. I apparently just missed the infamous "Durmax 10K generator" sale on EBay by a couple days... Oh well

If anybody has suggestions for a propane or dual fuel generator, they would be greatly accepted.

Thanks!

Just received an email that the replacement Dish Network DVR will be delivered tomorrow.

Last night, the old one started working again.:confused2: But it had erased half of the programming that was stored on it.

I've been playing phone tag with my satellite guy, and still think the ultimate solution is to switch to DirecTV...

:laughing:You can't win. We had DirecTV and when it got bad enough, we changed to Spectrum about 6 years ago, and as they kept going up and up on the price, we changed to Dish a bit over a month ago.

I’ve had dish for 22 yrs now. I own my equipment, no rental. Last time my receiver went out I called them, they let me add the maintenance backdated, then sent me a replacement receiver. I should have then dropped the maintenance, as by now I paid for that replacement one with maintenance fees.

NE weather does a # on outdoor electronics out this way as well. Verizon components seem to fail more than most. Now that I understand that they are trying to get out of the copper line business the breakdowns are due to neglect. Verizon probably took a page from PG&E's operations and (no) maintenance manual.

I still believe that Eversource is running too high roadside line voltages, but I am no brainiac on this stuff. My neighbor's rented solar field (100XkWp> than my system) may be a problem.

DTV is the only real game around here until we get broadband service which may happen in my lifetime. I am not a fan of DTV. I'll drop them in a heartbeat when the time comes; that could work out in two very different ways.

Ted- Thanks for sharing the snow pictures. I have seen a couple of dustings and one 7/8" snow event so far and do not foresee a whole lot of white stuff in my near term future. I'll be lucky if I see ~1'' Saturday night into Sunday morning before it changes over to snow; it will probably be a rain/freezing rain event..... Maybe ~Thanksgiving there will be possible weather event. I was involved in getting a propane powered generator system for that B&B in the Adirondacks. For that area Generac was the best based on cost, installation, and service. The Generac's are pretty quiet and I have not heard many complaints about the two units' reliability.

let it snow let it snow let it snow...somewhere else, pretty though
Mostly, absolutely on Fort Worth, lots of good rv campgrounds there
then continuing on to Amarillo and Albuquerque.
I have finished the first segment planning, down to Panama City, now working on there to Amarillo.
Will put that online within the week, will link to it. Then will modify it based on input and extra days in certain stops.
One of those stops was already Fort Worth/Dallas.

have been completely lazy all day.

David, congrats, that should be a really nice comfy pickup for you.

I had DirecTV back before it got bought out, and the subscription price actually went DOWN for the first few years. I don't think there's any kind of subscription out there that doesn't offer cheap introductory rates to attract new customers, then jacks the heck out of them as soon as the fixed price contract expires. Dish is no exception, at least in my experience. Surprisingly, haggling with them to roll back the increases hasn't made any difference in the past few years.

What a week, Tuesday low 20's, Wednesday hit 29 and my poor dog layed in the sun too long and got surnburnt (Chinese Crested) then Yesterday by 10am it was in the mid 30's and hit a high of 41 before a cool change came sweeping through, huge winds and dust and the temperature plummeted to 18 in under an hour and rain, combination of dust and light rain my silver SUV is speckled brown and silver and the windscreen washers turned the dust to a muddy slurry.
Today an expected high of 19 but not windy.
Bear in mind these are Celsius temps and 38 is about the 100 Fahrenheit mark, unseasonal for November.

Bunyip- The weather down your way as reported is scary. And your Summer is just beginning..... Not good. I hope you and yours can manage to stay out of harm's way. Good luck

I perceive you to be more of a Jungian sort of guy, but I really like your avatar.

Good evening all. 63F for the start, cloudy, light wind. Wind was moderate, Some rain showers, high temp was 67F, low temp will be about 47F at midnight. Front came through this evening, 30F cooler behind the front. Slow start again today, bike maintenance and prep for Saturday, need new front brake cable, old one is breaking, cut down one trunk of a 3 trunk tree, filled pickup bed, clean up weekend here so POA employees unloaded it and disposed of it :). Fish club meeting ended the day.
David and DABSGT very nice trucks!!
Scrambler nice update. Congrats on convincing Costco to restock your item.
David, looks likw a very productive day, I presume solar charging is back on line, are the generators set up to auto start yet?
prayers for all

Mostly,
Very productive.
Brought solar charging back online first.
Both generators set to autostart as designed (likely will have to tweak settings)
System is operating 100% of design, only 3 minor connection tweaks during commissioning.

The solar side I thought was spot on, based on your descriptions and pictures. I guessed a little concerning breakers for the 2 generator charging systems.

I don’t think solar is viable for my existing house, but when I downsize in retirement I’m thinking of the ability to go off grid.

Everyone here does grid tie solar, and you are down when the grid is down. I like your setup, even with 1 gen charging via the radians.

I’m not up on the breakers either. I did look ( 50, 80, 175 amp)

Personally, grid tied solar makes little sense without battery back up unless prime motivation is saving money (increasingly harder to do as the rules change)

Voluntary off grid is rarely justifiable solely on economics. What you see on the walls in my last pic is in excess of $50K (70% batteries)

Good morning, thankfully no snow here and unlike bunyip, zero chance of dogs or people getting sun burnt on this dull and damp typical November day. Nice and cosy inside though, thanks to a chunk of oak that has been burning bright for 12 hours, still giving off enough heat at dawn to prevent the poor Caframo fan from taking even a minutes rest.

David, great install, now you really must put up danger signs before your next guests arrive. They could get a severe electrically induced shock - just by asking how much it all cost.
