My mother said Dr. Higgins said he could never eat a squirrel because their anatomy was too similar to a human's.

Bird, sounds like a cover story to hide a bad drug trial - did this patients wake up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed after taking his medicine ?

29 right now...high in the lower to mid 30's today.

Wifey and step-daughter are heading to the Manchester NH airport about noon. They're going to Florida for a week to visit relatives. I'll be babysitting Bella...or, maybe she'll be babysitting me for a week

Yet another dry day for us, I still have a pile of paperwork to do but this weather is too good to miss being outside. My wife has me down for moving soil and filling holes in the driveway, while I want to get on with collecting wood that should have been split and stacked long ago. Not sure which of those will still be on the list unless I carry on after dark.

Wouldn't take long to get in this with an angle grinder, but thought some of you may like to see this absolutely stunning craftsmanship.Forged and Filed on Vimeo
Kyle, maybe next time it's quiet at work ... ? :)

Good Morning!!!! 45F @ 3:45AM. Periods of rain. High 43F. Winds SSE at 15 to 25 mph. Chance of rain 100%. 1 to 2 inches of rain expected. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.

As predicted, Mother Nature dropped 0.55" of rain yesterday, then tried to dry it all out with 42 MPH winds. It's been rockin' and rollin' outside ever since, with more on the way today.

On last week's trip, I had the privilege of purchasing gasoline in Big Sur at $6.59/gallon. I told my buddy we should gas up in Morro Bay that morning after breakfast because it would be cheaper, but I had no idea it was twice the price up the coast. Good thing we only had room for four or five gallons. And the road was open. Yesterday's rains and the fires around Malibu have Highway 1 closed again there.

I also saw my first gas pump offering E85 in the Los Angeles area. No motorcycle made is approved by any manufacturer for use with 15% ethanol gas, and it'll kill most small engines as well. I just don't understand why the country is going that way with all the new oil recovery techniques now in place.

Sounds like somebody forgot to wet the filter gasket with oil, Kyle. Good help is hard to find. I would have been tempted to have the dealer make a service call, on his nickel.

Was texting back and forth with my tech guru buddy yesterday because the cell reception is so bad here. Then decided to call him to demonstrate just how bad. Noticed that the iPhone was using WiFi calling, and he suggested that could be pert of the problem. Turned it off, and reception on his end was much better. Too much satellite latency to use the Internet for telephone calls here. So he suggested I reconsider the Verizon Jetpak for internet service. I'd already installed an app called OpenSignal on the iPhone, which claims to point to the direction of the nearest cell tower, and measure the signal strength. It can also make bandwidth measurements. When it found a 4G signal (same as LTE), bandwidth was twice what I get with the satellite. But 4G was intermittent, and on 1G bandwidth dropped to half that of satellite. He suggested getting the JetPak with an antenna jack, then hooking up a Yagi antenna to it. I'd already planned to call Verizon Monday to see if they'll tell me the direction to point my current 3G Yagi antenna/cell amplifier, as it doesn't seem to be working as well as it did before the fire and I suspect they've had to replace some cell towers. That should be a merry chase up the support ladder, but if I can find the right person, I should be able to get a better idea on whether or not the JetPak would work at my location. I'm well beyond my two year commitment period with HughesNet, and would switch in a heartbeat if the cell signal is reliable and the unlimited data plan really turns out to be truly unlimited. Apparently the "unlimited" cell phone plan chokes the data rate down once a customer exceeds 20-30Gb of data in a month, but the JetPak data plan doesn't. At least according to my guru...

Speaking of bad reception, the satellite Internet signal has been fading in and out with the heavy clouds and rainfall. I wonder if cell reception is similarly effected?

Glad you're retraining Brogen to stop his knee blocks, Jay. Until he's completely broken of them, though, can you try to land on him to break your fall?:D

That's more snow than I'd ever want to deal with, Ted, and a big reason why I resisted efforts by my company to transfer me to Albuquerque. One manager I knew that did move found out the first winter that his BMW M3 was pretty much useless after the first snowfall up where you are at.:laughing::laughing:

Thanks for the reminder, Wng, need to pick up tax software at Costco on the next visit to town.

Yesterday I noticed an exceptionally large pile of manzanita berry laden scat on the back patio. Bigger than anything a fox would leave, and now I'm wondering if a coyote has moved in. Checked the trail cam and pics from Jan 2 don't show it, but it's there on Jan 3. But no pics of the pooper. Now I'm wondering if I've got a bad trail cam as well...

Hope everyone enjoys what's left of the weekend!

28 up here, going to 55. Quite a swing. Sky cleared late yesterday, looks to be clear this AM too. Sun just popped over the trees so the pastures are bathed in sunshine.

Contentment - wngsprd - Excellent!

Will move some hay around today, work on the run-in, and putz around. Need to pickup some sticks, that's always an hour of bending over and walking to the burn pile. Not much else on the list for today.

Looks like Monday, I'll need to start another job search. Crazy times.

Enjoy the day all, be safe!

And this year I'm going to wrap my fig trees if the temps are under ten degrees at night. Last year they all died to the ground, came back slowly, but produced worse than the year before. There are only three small trees so I can wrap some plastic around them. I remember using peach baskets as a kid for this on little plants.

I always like Sunday mornings. Like an extra dose of peace and contentment.
Prayers for those in need.

My fig tree has only produced 3 figs in 5 years. It has two on it now.

Not too cold this morning 28°. Yesterday was in the high 30's and partly cloudy. Today is going to be windy with a chance of snow showers and a high around 35°.

Not much going on here today.

LS ... That's a lot of snow for your part of the country. We only have about 16 inches on the flat here. I'll try my best to keep the door closed.

Hope everyone has a good Sunday.
CWB.

43° here this morning with very dense fog. Forecast is for 71°, partly cloudy, and calm winds.

Spent part of yesterday replacing a handful of outdoor floodlights. Our outdoor kitchen has four floodlights that are about 13' above the floor. Three of the four failed over the last week. All are 90 watt halogen bulbs, in recessed fixtures. The house and O/D kitchen were built almost ten years ago and these are original bulbs so ..... guess I got my money's worth? Decided, if I had to get up on 10' step ladder I'd go ahead and replace all four. I got some 120 watt equivalent LED flood light bulbs for another project but, decided to use them instead of a trip to town. As expected, mud daubers had made their nests in the fixtures over the years so a couple of the old bulbs were not easy to remove. I'm hoping the cooler operating LED floods will be less attractive to the wasps? Anyone have any experience with changing from incandescent to LED outdoors. More bugs or less bugs?

I checked my inventory and I've run through all the 90 watt halogen flood bulbs I had so ..... it all LED going forward. We've also got 5 sets of double flood light fixtures, around the house for security lights.

Kyle ...... I always took my John Deere Garden tractors and zero turns to dealer for the first 50 hour service because of how tight the factory installed filters always are. Same for both LS Tractors. I'm thinking factories must have 800# gorillas installing oil filters? "We don't need any stinkin' oil on the gaskets".

Everyone have a great Sunday!

Prayers to all.

Rick, I replaced all the bulbs in my double fixtures around the house and garages with 90w equivalent dimable LEDs last year, no mud daubers or masons, in fact almost no bugs at all. Don’t have to clean those areas between house washings like I use to. I use dimables because mine are set to half power at dark, then go to full power when the beam is broken by movement.

LS, Has the new restaurant, up on Sandia, opened yet? Wife and I dined at the High Finance many time over the years. She is Sr. VP at a Houston Mortgage Company and they have a branch in ABQ.

The tramway ride, up Sandia, always offered great views at near sunset.

They have run into some snags... Both weather and material issues. The projected opening is late this summer / fall. There will be two restaurants when it reopens. One still called the "High Finance", and being a formal type dining area. The other will be more of a business casual atmosphere.

I can see it taking so long, they totally demolished the old and started the new building from scratch. Expensive proposition considering the very limited access to the site.

Some of the recent comments about coyotes has made me wonder how widespread the news has been about the recent coyote attacks in Frisco, TX. There's been stories on Fox TV news and in The Dallas Morning News. Some people out jogging or out for a walk were attacked at different times by a coyote. Now this is in town; rather large town. After a woman was pretty severely injured in an attack, they haired a professional hunter and supposedly killed a coyote, thinking they got the right one. But since then, a person out walking a small dog had the dog attacked by a coyote and some pretty serious injuries, but the guy managed to drove the coyote off and save his little dog. Of course, all I know about it is what's been in the newspaper and on TV and I sure know how brief and inaccurate they can be.

Coyote killed a lady here in Nova Scotia and was stocking a 6 year old when the school bus just got there in time. This was about 5 years ago. Since then people out for a walk was able to ward off attacks with their walking stick. Coyote was never a problem but here in ns they cross bred with wolves or big dogs. Now they run in packs and they are not to be trusted. A coyote never use to run in packs but the cross breeding changed that.

Good Morning Everyone!!!

A 32ºF start to the day with light snow falling presently 34ºF with continued snow; all uplifted spillover Lake Effect snow from Lake Ontario. The ground is covered; hiding all the frozen rain from yesterday. This snow should end later today as a cold front moves in. The anticipated Monday-Tuesday storm will start as snow and end as rain.:( Midweek is unsettled as several “cooler” waves move through; probable snow showers. I may see a couple of inches in total accumulation.

“… Pattern change for weather winter no winter the guessers are up in the air best guess wait and see if it gets cold again for any length of time in the east”- Buppies The “numbers” are starting to reflect a cool down late January/early February, but nothing is set in stone. The weather models are still having difficulties with this weather pattern. Wishcasting and real time observation seem to be the SOP for the ProMets.:(

“…. hope your icy conditions recede. Drive careful to avoid the idiots.”- Kyle There was very little traffic roadside yesterday. When I see a highway department sander I know it’s bad; the town saves money not sanding here. The sander was out this AM due to icing. = I am staying put and try to conserve energy. I probably will run the box blade with scarifiers down to address the frozen driveway.

“… I'm gonna feel this tomorrow.”- Don Like lemmings “taking the swim”, and salmon’s spawning runs some people are hardwired to maintain behavior. ;). I hope your body forgives you.

“… Didn’t work”- David I believe that most attempts at controlling one animal with the introduction of another results in unanticipated consequences. Usually things get worse for other species.

“…. Glad you're retraining Brogen to stop his knee blocks, Jay. Until he's completely broken of them, though, can you try to land on him to break your fall?”- RNG That’s the plan as I roll him over…. 2 can play that game.;) I suspect that he was rarely walked on a leash; just dumped in the family’s fenced in yard. He’s getting there.

“… cross bred with wolves or big dogs. Now they run in packs and they are not to be trusted. A coyote never use to run in packs but the cross breeding changed that.”- gap. I saw a couple of TV specials on “coydogs” and as I understand things colds in the NE are genetically related to wolves. And I agree about the packing. Their howls are different too- they start off howling like a wolf and end sounding yipping like a coyote. I love to hear them, but knowing that they are near is cause for some concern.

My + thoughts, wishes, and prayers.

Good morning to all! It was balmy out again this morning at 06:00---33 °F. Going up to 44 °. We should get some rain, depending on when it gets here. It was snowing this morning 120 miles NW of here.

Not doing much of anything today except puppy sitting / training. He wants to bite, chew, and eat everything! Including hands and pant legs. We're working on that. House breaking is actually going very well....so far.

There was a large vibration / rumble last evening.....startled us. Ended up a large sheet of snow about 12'x12' came sliding off the metal roof. One chunk is still up there, hanging out about 3', supported by a perpendicular roof. I tried using a shovel to knock it down, but no luck. It should come crashing down today with the higher temps.

Not wild mongooses, but I remember my kids having two ferrets as pets. Most hysterical moments when they would play / attack our 110# German Shepard. He was really good with other animals and took a lot of abuse from those ferrets. He would let them curl up with him and sleep.

Vet appointment first thing tomorrow to have a "puppy check". All should be good.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday! Prayers sent.

Ted- Your location and elevation makes for "interesting" weather; for different reasons, and like NE if one does not like the weather wait....... Good luck with the puppy training. Good luck with the Vet.

We rescued a 90# female German Shepard from a deplorable home setting. The household had ferrets. She reportedly would carry them around in her house. One Winter a stoat/ermine in Winter coloration, looking for mice entered our house Our GS saw it and chased it through the downstairs knocking chairs and tables everywhere trying to pick it up. The stout ended up behind me in the easychair then bolted out the way it came in with the same response from our dog. The kitchen furniture was everywhere... The house is now somewhat more mammal resistant.

I miss that dog. One of the best dogs we ever had. All she really needed/wanted was an alpha male. She got her wish. Cancer got her far too early. :(
