One wonders why TP is a top seller during these events. We keep ample supplies on hand all the time.

Good evening all. 69F for the start, overcast, no rain overnight, calm wind. Partial clearing to mostly cloudy in the late afternoon, after some drizzle in early afternoon, light wind, and a high temp of 72F. Choir practice restarted this morning, followed by lawn mowing, followed by trip to town/dentist. Dog walk tonight to end the day's activities.
East coasters good luck with your prep, and be safe!
Randy glad to hear your continued improvement.
Drew, had tornado hit one of the marina on the Mississippi river. Docks and boats were everywhere. Ugly, ugly ugly.
Don good luck on your costume choice.
Prayers for all.

Irv, sorry for the loss of your friend. Sounds like he was a great fellow.

sorry for your loss 300Uguy. I noticed as I get older, more of family and friends are checking out.

Daughter and granddaughter that lives with us are going camping this weekend.. should be interesting. Wife and I get quiet at the home front. Not a lot on schedule this weekend, need to do some maintenance on travel trailer, mow lawn, nap.

Our favorite missionary visited last night, pulled pork and beef on smoker. It was good hearing the stories of the eastern Europe and the work being accomplished. Next year marks 20 yrs for her as eastern Europe missionary, she comes back to the states for 4-6 months every 4-5 years (short 1-2 week trips as needed also).

My friend grew up in Croatia until he was 16 (his parents were missionaries).

Maybe in two years I can get Drew to move down with his tractor to share mowing the common areas. There are lots of single activities to meet people.
Drew, the storm might be a GREAT reason to come on down and visit. It sounds like you might be in cat 4 winds in a couple of days. Grapple, FEL, and such will be hero of the neighborhood after the storm. You should consider leaving. Here in Texas, many cover their windows with sheets of plywood.

Seriously, all you guys in the path, make preparations. Roads will be impassable. Power will be out, there will be common food shortages, drinking water. Fill your tubs after you scrub them and charge all your rechargeables. Fill jugs of water and put them in the freezer, you can move them to the fridge if you lose power. Get Batteries. If generators fail, your frozen and refrigerated foods will go bad in a couple of days. Meds, and such. Then after the storm, mosquitoes, heat and humidity will be bad. If you have fireants, they will be horrible. You might see softball sized clumps of them floating downstream or clinging to a tall weed. Have some spray ready if they attach to your house. I know this rambles on and sounds like I've been drinking, but I haven't. Just tired and typing all I can remember to help my brothers from another mother out.

Rip, not sure how far you've gotten on your run-in, but if the plywood is screwed in, I would consider unscrewing and taking it off, stacking and tying it down. It looks like a big parachute to the wind.

I used my tractors' FELs and some chains to add some weight to help hold down opposing corners of my storage building.

Prayers for all.

57 right now...high in the low 70's and rain...

The cooler temperature and dark, rain filled sky makes it feel like autumn, though so far the trees seem to be enjoying the novelty of frequently getting wet after such a long dry summer. They are almost all resisting the temptation to change color.

Thanks for your concern Rip, I saw my optician last week and as long as I'm careful my eye should recover before the month is out.

TP = ? Toothpaste ? Tuna Pasta ? Oh, Toilet Paper - guess you get through quite a lot when you hear Hurricane Florence may soon be knocking at your door. Take care all.

RNG did your little reptillian friend miss you and your genorisity with mealworms while you were away camping ?

now peak winds predicted between 45 and 55 mph for almost 24 hours, that should be interesting...the real question is gusts...
I'm stocked to the gills, going to pick up another tarp at TSC if they have any left this morning. 10 percent off coupon helps...

chainsaws lined up, all full and ready. Grapple going on today, bungie cords on anything and everything (thankfully I had just bought about 20 super heavy duty bungies, using them everywhere now. Need to keep airborne stuff away from windows. Realized my nice stainless grill is only connected by a permanent gas line, boy would that be bad news if it broke off...so grill is going to be bungied every which way. Going to look for shutoff valve, assume they put one on...will turn it off during storm.
Also going to bungie down top to hot tub, it has some hold downs I never used, now they sure will be.

Well, should have some interesting pictures by the end of the week.

another hot day with rain due in this afternoon. This pre hurricane rain is going to make everything much worse, particularly North and West of here. Looks like storm is going just below me, with the high wind side going over my head. Hmmm.

Had to chuckle, my Generac Holdings stock went up 5 percent yesterday. Every gen on the East Coast has probably been bought out...
Only thing I can do nothing about is my roof. C'est la vie.

I'm going to call the water company today and find out if historically the water has shut down. Water tower about a mile from me, no idea of backup pump reality. could be water water everywhere but none to shower in. I have plenty to drink, cases of bottled water.
Never filled a tub before, probably a good idea. Also have bleach to disinfect if need be.

Thanks for ideas Kyle. Floating clumps of fire ants...yikes. Crazy thing is if they landed on you, they wouldn't be in the least bit appreciative, first thing they'd do is bite you...nasty bugs.

Well I have a sheet of plywood in the barn and a paddle in the garage. Who could want for more? ;)

71 outside this AM. Rain just moved through. Zero visibility with the fog. Heading to lower 80's. Will start freezing water bottles today and stocking up on munchies. Spam works. Crackers. Need to see if I can get that chainsaw working at full speed. Looks like the next seven days will be raining. Wow.

Hope all have great day. Be safe.

the storm keeps inching northward like Toppop says, and it's now probably over New Bern, North of Wilmington and just South of Washington. But the bands are so big that everyone is going to get clobbered. And now they say it might get to cat 5 due to traveling over 80 degree water.
Geeeez. There's only so much slowing down it will do over the Outer Banks, Hatteras Island will simply get wrecked, then it goes over the Pamlico Sound, like a big Chesapeake Bay, and the water is warm in there too.

Freezing water, like that idea. On my list. Still have plenty of freezer space so might as well, even if I have to give away to others.
We have to look out for each other.

Am finally beginning to get nervous. Healthy nervous. Rick, you didn't leave your farm in 100mph winds, and I'm not leaving mine.
I know what my cheap extruded gutters sound like in 50mph gusts, can't imagine over 100 mph. They will be found up in the pine trees someplace...
Would be very happy to avoid water intrusion into house, new shingles? I need them anyway...wanted nicer imitation slate shingles and if insurance pays half, well I'm looking for silver linings even before the fan is clogged...

up at 3am mind whirring, making lists, at least I have training in this.
Am guessing my tractor and grapple is going to be appreciated by my neighbors. I'll go round and see who needs help.
In 1955 some combo of hurricanes flooded Eastern PA and the Delaware River on which our farm had land all the way down to the River.
We were up on high bluffs, but i remember at age 5 that August in 1955 standing on the hitch bar and holding on to the tractor seat as my Father drove about two miles down to the River after putting on the snow plow and start plowing people's driveways. Three to five inches of mud.
Dead animals. Nasty smells, likely everything polluted from upstream. We left muddy tracks half way home, I was watching, and finally we made it to our long gravel driveway, and while I wouldn't have admitted it then, I felt safe again. Floods are bad news, so much gets wrecked and when you are in an old community near a River, there are still plenty of homes at ground level. Which means with a 15 foot surge, they'll have between 5 and 8 feet of water in their homes, if my guess at downtown elevation is right.

Have always said I wanted to be near the water, not in it. Sure hope the fancy new townhouses built right on the River hold up.
Other than an old train bridge there, it's a straight shot down the River and into the Bay, so the "fetch" as they call it added to a hurricane
might exceed the manufacturer's warranty on their big windows...

Good morning all, 65 heading to 77 with a 30-40% chance of showers, T-storms. When I was 10-13 we had Camille and Agnes. In Camille (69) some places had 27 in of rain and the James river crested over 39 ft above flood stage. With Agnes (72) we only had rain of around 15 in and the James river went even higher in some places like Columbia Va. We in the inland Mid Atlantic have not had a big one in a good while. We need to be ready too. If you live down near the creek or river you should think about visiting friends. NWS is now saying tropical storm conditions here Thursday through Friday night.

Drew, PRAYERS sent, be careful, we all look forward to hearing from you each day.

Others in the line of the storm. Prayers sent.

have a great day, prayers sent for all in need. Ed

Never filled a tub before, probably a good idea. Also have bleach to disinfect if need be.

Bath tub water and hot tub water are a good supply to fill the commode tank with after flushing, otherwise you only get one flush after your water cuts off.

Check the lowest area where water can enter under your house, see if you can block it up.

Heavy rolls of plastic will help roof leaks if TS is out of tarps, Walmart paint section may not have been raided, find the plastic with the greatest MIL thickness. Have available something to nail or staple the plastic or tarps down with. Those flat roofing disk come to mind.

If a window breaks out you need to have plywood or something to seal it up to keep that AC in.

68 high of 80 today what I’m reading says Wilmington to State line SC then stall near SW Va this will be really bad for all concerned huge coastal damage extreme flooding N.C. Va things like we have never seen.

Remember the lack of sunspots from our sun this is one of the results

Please everyone in harms way be careful prayers sent

69 and fog makes zero visibility...going to 85, maybe storms.

I had one last French drain to build, so started on that yesterday, trying to beat Florence. Rented a trencher for the first time...helped, but not a magic bullet...still much hand digging to get proper width and shape, plus a couple of areas where the trencher won't fit. Returning it today, and then more hand digging, then runs to the quarry for gravel.

Local weather guy says Emerald Isle is the new target, then maybe a dip SW once it hits Raleigh...this would be better news for us, but probably worse for Ed and Buppies and Drew.

Good morning I am here in a little town called Hurt in South Central VA. About 25 miles south of Lynchburg we have done got things pretty much done in preparation for the storm. At least where I am at it's above flood stage but I have 2 huge old oak trees that could be a problem if the wind is blowing from the north but if from any other direction they would make good fire wood for my shop stove and would last a couple of years. For the most part I live in a little hole but it guns down hill so way to flood my house but surrounded by trees we should be ok. Well to those who are in the path of this monster be safe don't take chances if you're not sure if it will be safe but most important keep Faith that all will be ok because He is with us and knows what He is doing!!! And don't be afraid to ask for His help.

   / Good morning!!!! #81,560
I got some extra cell phone batteries a while back. I plan on being judicious with my generator.
And we have plenty of five gallon buckets to move water around. Our pool is also a source of water for toilets. Usually the pools get trashed with hurricanes or severe weather.
Sterno cans for cooking and the wood stove for better meals.
My concern are my trees. Too close to the houses and way too big. Not much I can do about them.
My animals will be inside during this mess coming our way. Remember the pets.
Hope all are preparing.
