40F and mostly cloudy but seeing an occasional peek of sun.

Actually seemed fairly pleasant when I was outside earlier.

Today will likely be spent working on repairing a friends old KK landscape rake. The pivot point - which he claimed was loose and flopping around - was made by using a piece of pipe that fits inside another piece of pipe. The first piece of pipe was welded to the frame that holds the tines ... and then had an index plate welded on top so it was "captured" and couldn't be disassembled without cutting it apart. Also not greasable ...

The pipe that the other pipe fits into had broken off the 3PH frame at least once, possibly twice. Previous repairs were not particularly impressive.

The angle that the tines attach to is only 1/4" and it's pretty bent up and has a couple of cracks in it where the reverse angle that forms a box is welded to it.

I've got some 2" CR solid and a piece of 2" DOM heavy wall tube that would make a nice pivot (what I used on my rake) ... the trick will be getting that welded on at the correct distance so that the index plate can be locked into it's bracket to hold the rake stationary.

Loads of fun ...

Rick,

My vote would be for stainless as far as screw material goes, and a torx head to drive them. Self-drilling would be ideal. McMaster has stainless, self-drilling ... but the ones I ran across appear to phillips head, rather than torx ... didn't look all that long though.

Rlgustafson keep us informed of how you end of attaching the boards on your trailer. I also need to re-bed my 20 year old 5X10 trailer

I needed to replace a couple of boards on my 6x4 trailer. There were "dents" in the treated pine tongue and grove flooring. Took the easy way out and covered the existing floor over with a large sheet of marine ply. That was 15 years ago. The only downside (if it could be called that) was the loss of depth in the sides by the thickness of the 7 ply.

Howdy back at ya' Dave!

Need to get some clutch plates and new springs for our bushhog PTO clutch. Just keeps on slipping and wearing out the plates. It has new blades too. I guess the springs are 15 years old....I sometimes just want to tighten the tootenbacher out of them.

years ago, I put 2 x 10's on my 16' trailer. I drilled through the wood and rails with the tap minor sized drill, then drilled the same size hole (as the bolt) just through the wood, then I tapped them with a pulley tap (long version). After screwing the bolts into place, I still got underneath and put on some poly lock nuts.

Oh, I put the first 2 boards on by bowing them with a jack and big tractor FEL, then lowered the jack and let them slowly into place, but that was quite dangerous with the 10" wide boards, so I just cut off the angle iron on the back edge and then it was eazy peazy... Just wish I had a tig back then to weld the angle iron back into place. I used a stick and got the wood hot enough to smoke at every weld...

Kyle, been there, done that. I’ve got 24” pieces to replace on the short dovetail. I’ll grind off the welds on angles, insert boards, soak the new boards with water, and re-weld angles.

Good evening all. 68F this morning, overcast, windy from the start. Shy clear about noon, wind was 20-25, and high temp was 82F, not as warm as threaten earlier this week. Started on noise abatement in the van, removed TV, found wireless transmitter was velcroed to van roof and adhesive had failed, letting it flop around. Wrapped it in foam, wrapped loose transformer in foam and replace TV. Removed wood face for VHS player and packed the player in foam and replaced the face. Have not road tested yet, and still need to change oil. This afternoon put new chain on chain saw, probably need to put new sprocket on it too. New chains cut sooo nice :)

Good morning all. A nippy 27 here today going all the way up to 68 today, showers coming in late and rain into tomorrow.
Really not sure of what to do today, worked late into evening last night putting in a big seed order for next year. About 70 varieties of vegetables at last count. Then went back and wrote down numbers of seeds in each packet, ranging from a low of ten to a high of 800. 800 carrot seeds in one little packet. Geez they must be small... If they all grow I'll have several thousand carrots in about five colors. Should be interesting. Really have to get my act together with the foodbanks, I can't eat all this. Actually the beets, carrots, and other root crops are an experiment to see if the deer will eat the tops. Beet tops are pretty tasty....

David, nice powerwashing job. Mostly, if you need some VHS tapes to play in your van, holler, I have a few boxes of them in the attic.
Though perhaps while regionally correct I should probably leave out Debbie Does Dallas....:D

Good morning all. It's all a bit dull here this morning, nothing like the dawn captured by Tungularfishcamp.

The intermittent electrical fault on my old Forester is back and has about wrecked the battery. With the help of an ammeter I thought I had narrowed it down yesterday morning, then found the fault had again cleared itself when I wasn't looking. I left it with the fuse pulled on the keyless entry circuit and it held up last night, though I wouldn't be surprised if it's just playing with me again.

Kyle good to hear your little boy is much better.

For those of you with a little time to spare and who like to see a bit of engineering ingenuity, I put a link in the welding section to a guy's video I came across. I thought of you PJ when he showed how he used piano wire and a ball bearing to check his welding table was flat.

Mornin Daugen,
If your looking for deer treats try brusselsprouts. Until fall as things die off they leave most of my stuff alone, not so with my Brussels they will, destroy the plants given a chance any time of the season,mIt's funny they have gotten into them in the the fall but still just go for the leaves and leave the sprouts alone.
